Evolution is a basic principle of nature which applies to every living thing. Of course, over the years of research it had to be rewritten to fit newest findings. And it still can't be completely understood, even nowadays.
But the main points are well understood, and one of the most basic things about evolution is this: No trait in a living being is kept over a long time, if it doesn't provide an advantage for the organism.

But in science this can't be applied to everything. You simply can't find every answer on your own. Science is based around exchanging ideas and findings because, for example, not every biologist can make his own test to find out about evolution. At some point, you have to believe others.

You can seek knowledge on your own all you want, but in the end you will realise that there are questions you can't answer. And most people who come to this point just start to believe whatever they want - just because they want to believe it.

Melanin, the thing that gives people skin colour, blocks out the UVA/UVB rays and the head that the sun produces, that's why it's in africans in such large doses. As I understand it, there are some traits that are picked up through random genetic mutation that are neither positively or negatively selected, like red hair (not sure if it actually is but it seems like it might be). These traits stick around simply because there is no reason to get rid of them, like the appendix.

An interesting sidenote about adaptions to extreme climates, after many generations people from extremely hot climates (such as africans) tend to be taller and thinner as an adaption for the intense heat, while people from colder climates, such as Inuits, tend to have shorter, more rounded phenotypes. I am unsure of the exact scientific name so I can't provide you with a link, sorry :)
