When your using them to relax or have fun, they aren't.

When your being a coward and using them to get away from problems, you are an idiot and you will still have the problem, less money, (and possibly, depending on the drug) more problems.

You can use marijuana either way. Tell me you've never met someone who decided they'd rather smoke weed then look for a job or bring up their grades? Its the same thing. It doesn't matter if they're smoking weed or shooting heroin in their eyeball, they're still just running from problems.

And what about people who bury themselves in Television anime video games and the INTERNET.

Should those be illegal? Can wasted time, loss of physical health, productivity, and even running away from problems be considered self harm?

My point in a nutshell.

Well, at least for video games, there is a HUGE difference.

While weed/shrooms/alcohol/name the narcotic of your choice mostly impaires you and overstimulates your brain cells, giving you a somewhat forced break from reality (you'll be fully operational once the high/trip/hungover are done), video games, if anything, increase creativity, hand-to-eye coordination, reflexes, quick thinking etc etc etc.
Otherwise they wouldn't have (for instance) combat simulator games for the US Army to train on
There was once even a case when a Unreal Tournament player saved an old lady when street crossing thanks to his sharp reflexes (no bullshit).
The downside of video games, though, just like television is that most of the times your brain is forced-fed the visual & audio information, it's too busy processing them. Unlike a book when, upon reading, the brain subconsciously creates an image of the read text.
