I don't like using emoticons, or usual internet acronyms for that matter (i.e. lol, idk, etc.), but it's really the only way to get your emotions across through text without being incredibly blunt and forthright.

I don't like it either, but you can't deny it's difficult to read a person's reaction through normal text. It just feels so bland and formal when someone says "I found that funny" instead of "lol" or "xD". The latter reactions I completely detest using, but I don't mind others using them because I realize it's an easy way to get their point across.

Posting images is another level of emoticons. When you don't have images, you use what you have. Therefore I disaggree with you on your statement about emoticons being unnecessary.
