When one eats boiled rice, the rice grains actually sick to each other, forming clumps which can be easily picked up with chop sticks.

I heard it was because of a chinese emperor who was afraid to be killed. So he ordered anyone dining at his table to eat with sticks so that no one could murder him with a knife or some shit like that. I guess it became a standard. But I dunno if its true
#113 to #71 - ziighostiiz (09/24/2012) [-]

Sticky rice you can pick it up easily with chopsticks. Also, asian cuisine tend to have food that is easy to pick up with chopsticks. If we all use spoon to eat rice and other dishes as well, we will be furiously switching over between spoon and chopstick every second we want to try something.
#80 to #67 - N. Korean citizen (09/24/2012) [-]
So we should start adapting the food and not the tools we use for eating?
User avatar #94 to #80 - wooyoungkim (09/24/2012) [-]
when did I say that? I'm giving an explanation for why people use chopsticks, dumbass
User avatar #65 - Rileto (09/24/2012) [-]
Chopsticks are really easy to make I'm sure, maybe they were utilized because not everybody had cash to buy silverware instead of more important things.

i was raised using chopsticks... they're just extensions to my fingers now and i find them better than forks.
opposable thumbs FTW!
User avatar #55 - idividedbyzero (09/24/2012) [-]
Forks were considered as a sign of aggression, still, who the fuck would say, "Yup, two sticks is much better."
User avatar #54 - karvarausku (09/24/2012) [-]
Chopstick were made by hunger starving farmers...
When they didn't have much food they invented chopsticks so they wouldn't hoard all the food in a second so the stomach would get the feeling it would be full, this way they saved food...

proper Chinese rice is a lot stickier than the rice you get elsewhere therefore making it easier to pick up with sticks
User avatar #50 to #46 - skidbladnir (09/24/2012) [-]
and if you practice it works with most of the "common" rice sorts
User avatar #51 to #50 - Benjerminge (09/24/2012) [-]
yeah its still not that difficult...
User avatar #52 to #51 - skidbladnir (09/24/2012) [-]
The Chinese have their knifes in the kitchen instead of the table.
Sometimes these sticks are more functional than fork or a spoon, because you can grab things.
Isn“t it.
User avatar #45 - neighsayer (09/24/2012) [-]
so when the bowl is almost empty you can pick up each individual piece.

you hold it with your hands. it's pretty simple to figure out. you hold the black seaweed part so your hands don't get sticky at all.
