How did people thumb this up
The space shuttle looking similar doesn't mean they haven't put billions of dollars of improvement into the space program

I remember the early space days when Vger went homicidal on some space fleets.
User avatar #479 - bushingenna (08/23/2012) [-]
ur stupid space shuttles arent used any more
#476 - abdullahmag (08/23/2012) [-]
if it aint broke, don't fix it.

seriously though, nasa spends a lot on research, so while the shuttle might looks somewhat similar, there's many differences in terms of materials and equipment and softwares.

Technology advances exponentially. Meaning every 30 years, processing power increases ~1 billion fold. The smart phones we carry around in our pockets today are more powerful than the most advanced mainframe computers, which took up entire office building floors, back in the early 1980s.

Imagine what our kids will play with in 2042 :)

I hope your friend was for funding NASA, because they are nearly completely unfunded. I don't understand how space exploration and understanding isn't a top priority.
#459 to #453 - mofalcon (08/23/2012) [-]
Weapons can be sold for money, space exploration doesn't bring in any money, only prestige, and the ever-so-undervalued, knowledge. It's easy to see the reasoning, it's just very hard to accept.

Yeah you are right, NASA wouldn't be bringing back any economic value from space...

A government isn't looking for knowledge, it is looking for power and wealth for it's people (or in more corrupt governments for its own officials), not for the entire human race.
#498 to #473 - N. Korean citizen (08/23/2012) [-]
If military power were the only motivator then funding a space age would be a top priority. A military hold in space would be invaluable. Why slap our cocks around down here with bullets and rockets to kill people when we could be the first to build a death star. Sure, the laser won't destroy cities, but how can you fight something in space?
#480 to #473 - lujan (08/23/2012) [-]
the moon has a large abundance of naturally occuring hydronium, and if we filled up 1 shuttle with it then we'd be able to power to entire U.S. for at least a full year.
User avatar #493 to #480 - mofalcon (08/23/2012) [-]
It'd be great if we could farm resources from space, but our spacecraft have this terrible tendency to burst into flames when we make the slightest mistakes. Also I've never heard of using H3O as fuel, how is it use?
#499 to #493 - lujan (08/23/2012) [-]
I'm not 100% sure, i just remember reading that, but it would probably be used in a way similar to how we make electricity from nuclear power plants. Just my guess.
User avatar #613 to #499 - mofalcon (08/23/2012) [-]
I think you meant hydrogen, as in hydrogen fuel cells, which are great in cars because the only byproduct they release is water. The only thing I know about H3O is that it gives acids their qualities and is present in all acidic substances in aqueous solutions.
User avatar #478 to #473 - mofalcon (08/23/2012) [-]
it'd be really cool if we found water on mars though. Then we could start Terra-forming the planet and the extra space would definitely be valuable. But of course it's damn near impossible for humans to think of the long-term benefits of something with our terribly short life-spans.
User avatar #483 to #478 - wolverinebamf (08/23/2012) [-]
Also, terraforming would have to go on forever, and continue going on when we lived on mars, because the solar winds would keep fucking with the atmosphere, we need to find a way to give mars a magnetic field.

Short of filling the damn thing with molten metal I have no idea. Actually I think it's fair to say I didn't consider that fact at all. Thank you for pointing that out, it may come up in conversation at some point.

It's not like the shuttles didn't change at all in 30 years. Externally there isn't much of a difference, but the equipment inside was upgraded a lot.
