Because where I'm from, it gets to the point where if you try to point out something in a logical way that suggests America sucks more than another country in any aspect (like scientific literacy), people go apeshit at you for not blindly accepting something that could be improved, for no other reason except 'Merica.

No, people actually do say that or something similar to it. Mostly it's just an implied "your country sucks" such as the eagle picture "Sees London is hosting Olympics. Lands on Mars.". Everything I've ever seen that contains American pride (as people self proclaim when they complain about backlash) make the front page of this site has that "We're better than you" feel to it.
Saying that this was clearly a joke is like when a douche bag yells "Hey faggot!" and throws something at another kid in front of a crowd and then says "Calm down jeez I was just fuckin' around".

I rarely take offense to things on the internet, in fact this thing is the only thing I take offense to. Not because I can't take a joke, but because I literally used to seeing this in a serious context. Mostly on my facebook newsfeed, usually if I say something like our military spending is utter bullshit, I'll end up trying to defend my point and purpose against people who actually talk this way. I'm used to being defensive, not offended.
