I don't believe it. The kid would have to be young enough to believe in Superman, yet old enough to get his hands on a gun. He'd have to either have a gun with him at all times, or know Reeves. There's no specific year, location, or really any specifics to this story at all. Sounds like an urban legend. At IMDB they claim the gun was a Luger, which I doubt because that just so happens to be the same gun he was killed with years later. So I think the stories are getting mixed.

I did find this on a website.

Did George Reeves really almost get shot by a young boy while speaking to a group of children?

This is likely untrue. Reeves often spoke to groups of children to help promote the Superman TV series. As the story goes, once when he appeared to speak at a department store wearing the Superman costume, a boy who had taken his father's gun almost shot Reeves. The boy explained that he wanted to watch the bullets bounce off Superman. Luckily, the situation was apparently averted, and thereafter Reeves continued to speak to groups of children, only without the Superman costume. This is believed to have been a story made up by Reeves, so that he wouldn't have to wear the costume at public appearances. In costume, children would often kick him and throw rocks at him to test his Superman abilities.

A lot of people owned guns in the 50's... maybe its his dads?
User avatar #32 to #24 - thesilence (08/17/2012) [-]
It was his dad's gun. There was a film about George Reeves and this scene was part of it, its probably on YouTube somewhere.
User avatar #25 to #24 - psydoc (08/17/2012) [-]
Well if the story was true it would have to be his dads, because that's not a gun you could just buy. I think the kid would probably have to be max around 8 years old to believe he's really Superman, and I doubt an 8 year old would be likely to get ahold of his dads gun, load it, show up at an event and pull it on Reeves. I think it's one of those stories people want to believe, and a convenient way for Reeves to say no to showing up at events in the Superman outfit.

not all people put their guns in safe places.

when i was about 8 years old i could easily get myself a crossbow, shotgun or a sniper rifle(cannot recall the models) and my cousins had an acces to a freaking armory of hunting weapons(since my family lives near city we dont keep so many guns in our house)

just because you are 8 years old doesnt mean you are unable to get guns.nor use them....
User avatar #27 to #26 - psydoc (08/17/2012) [-]
I'm not saying it's totally impossible, just highly unlikely. I'm guessing you never took a gun down to the mall at age 8. If you could somehow magically cross reference the age of kids who take loaded weapons outside their house with the age of kids who believe what they see on TV is real, I'd guess you'd find little overlap. That, the fact that there's no real documentation of such an incidence (which I would think would be all over the papers), and that this story appears to have benefited Reeves, make me doubt it.
#28 to #27 - angelious (08/17/2012) [-]
you also need to take in count the time this happened.

1950 television was rather new thing and not all people would start differentiating between fiction and fact.specially then young ones.

also the security system of that time was not so tough, and nobody really believed that a small kid would even try to smuggle a gun into mall is shaky at best.

ofcourse i am not flatout saying this story is true.rather im saying it CAN be true

I heard about this from my grandmother. We were watching the old Superman cartoons (The 90s one) when she told me about it.

I was really surprised that my grandmother knew about superman at the time.

My grandma is the best.

Does your grandma also know about coca-cola, mickey mouse and the name of the town she lives in.
#45 to #16 - drsingerx (08/17/2012) [-]
If you're talking about coca-cola containing cocaine, that is incorrect. Cocaine is a processed product from the Coca leaf. Coca-Cola however processed its own coca leaves for their drink, and was originally sold as a medicinal beverage. The coca plant was thought to have healing properties at the time.

Yes, Coke was a medicine. Get over it.

No I was talking about Coca Cola the kind you get from just about anywhere on the planet but thanks for the history lesson i guess.

My grandmother came from mexico as a child, she was raised on one side of the train tracks that look like **** , while the other side was the 'white people' land.

She only got to see some shows (After working in the fields most of the day) when a family friend gave them a TV, that same family friend who i look up to as an aunt growing up.

Now a days, my Aunt barely remembers my grandmother on most days, and last time i saw her, she asked me who i was and if I met her daughter.

She has dementia. in case you didn't know. :(

Thanks for reminding me that i am losing one of the few women in my life that made me the man I am today.
