"Of the animals that live in the sea or in a river, if the animal has fins and scales, you may eat it. But whatever lives in the sea or in a river and does not have fins and scales -- including the things that fill the water and all other things that live in it -- you should hate. You must not eat any meat from them or even touch their dead bodies, because you should hate them. You must hate any animal in the water that does not have fins and scales."

As a Catholic, I see what you are trying to say, and I appreciate it, but I believe you are going about it all wrong. First and foremost, as you said, it is not up to us to judge others, it is up to the Lord to decide what is a sin and what isn't. We all do things that may not be considered right and so we have no place weighing in on other peoples actions. We are only people and we are flawed, and so to say that we completely understand the Lord's plan and what he wants is foolish. What many people don't know is that the Church recently changed it's stance, stating that no matter the religion of a person, if that person lives a good and righteous life, treating others with love and respect, that soul will be embraced when they leave this mortal coil. It is important for Christians to remember that our faith culminates in living like Jesus did. He never forced another to follow his ways and never criticized others for the way they lived, he only offered help, compassion, and urged people to live good lives.

So basically you are cherry picking the parts you want to follow.

"If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death. Their blood shall be upon them." - Levictus 20:13

If you truly believe that the bible is god's word then you should follow all of it, or none of it.

what i ama trying to say is that i am not picking and choosing. Leviticus is a part of the "pentateuch" which is the collection of history books. they are historical meaning that they don't apply anymore. in the constitution it allowed slavery it talks about it in our history books. that doesn't mean we follow that today
#425 to #356 - frodothetroll **User deleted account** (08/01/2012) [-]
Why not? The New Testament says slavery is OK.

Slaves, obey your earthly masters with deep respect and fear. Serve them sincerely as you would serve Christ. (Ephesians 6:5)

User avatar #430 to #425 - faithrider ONLINE (08/01/2012) [-]
slavery in the Bible is not what you think. in those times the word slave was more akin to what we would today call an indentured servant. or so i am told. that is one of those things where i am obviously not old enough to have been there to know what it really means. the fact is historically that is what i am told. another example might be some sort of apprentice i was told.
#434 to #430 - frodothetroll **User deleted account** (08/01/2012) [-]
You were told bullshit then.
User avatar #436 to #434 - faithrider ONLINE (08/01/2012) [-]
the other problem is that it also tells the masters to treat their slaves correctly and obviously that didn't happen in America. slavery was horrible.
User avatar #354 to #348 - faithrider ONLINE (08/01/2012) [-]
that is old testament. Jesus shook a lot of things up. have you read about Mary Magdalen? she was caught adultering and the punishment for that is also death. Jesus saved her from that death and she followed him ever since.

"It is easier for Heaven and Earth to pass away than for the smallest part of the letter of the law to become invalid." (Luke 16:17)

The Old Testament still counts, but nice try.
User avatar #364 to #355 - faithrider ONLINE (08/01/2012) [-]
Then how did Jesus go against that law? tell me that. if we still followed the law of the old testament then "gentiles" wouldn't be allowed to be Christians. if that were the case then there would only be Jewish Christians.
#371 to #364 - frodothetroll **User deleted account** (08/01/2012) [-]
Because the Bible is a self-contradicting piece of junk?

"Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets. I have come not to abolish but to fulfill. Amen, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest part or the smallest part of a letter will pass from the law, until all things have taken place." (Matthew 5:17)

i said extremely not extremist.. extremists are like the westboro baptist church. i believe in the Bible and the Bible only. the other thing you have to understand is the places where it has laws like that are in the old testament where it also tells us not to eat certain foods. Jesus made new rules. He said "love your neighbor as yourself" including homosexuals. they are considered sinners but i have specifically said that i don't hate sinners. i hate the sin. he also said "that which i have made clean cannot be made unclean" thus the reason i enjoy bacon so much today.

What's absolutely mind-boggling is how much money is put into rallying against gay marriage. Holy shit, people. All that money could have gone to, you know, good causes like charity and stuff. If you solemnly believe that allowing gay couples to marry would destroy the family unit or hurt the country, then I just don't know what to tell you. You're too far removed from reality to listen to reason.

Marriage is, first and foremost, a social contract between two people consummating a relationship and a commitment. None of the terms or obligations regarding marriage would be at all affected by allowing gay people to marry; it's an entirely arbitrary barrier to entry. It's no different to voting and other rights; you once would have defined voting as a thing that a man does, or a thing that a white person does. That changed. Why shouldn't this?

Furthermore, why can't a gay couple get married within a religious organization that accepts gay marriage?
#280 - leedleedleefool (08/01/2012) [-]

Because a marriage license brings certain privileges. If someone ends up in the hospital for something serious, the partner would not be able to see them (only family and spouses can) or use their partner's health insurance if they have none themselves.

User avatar #248 - Underneath (08/01/2012) [-]
I have several friends who were gay and although I am not, I am all for it. I just think that the religion aspect is where it gets dicey. Since church and state are seperate institutions I don't think that it is right to force churches to marry gay couples if they don't want to.
User avatar #276 to #248 - jakefenris (08/01/2012) [-]
Which is why in most countries equal marriage laws exist but allow clergy men or whatever to choose if they wish to marry the couple who asks. However, most couples do the modern and sane thing and get a civil marriage and have a ceremony they themselves chose and enjoy. Religion doesn't have a monopoly on marriage. And just as you say the state shouldn't be allowed to influence the church neither should the church hold any sway over the state, i.e. no religious member of government.

To be fair, some of the goofy ass, raunchy shit that goes on in some of those parades is the kind of stuff that makes uninformed straight people think gays are all crazy deviants. well yeah, but were talking about adoption here. The adoption process is all about whats best for the child, not the possible parents,as it should be. If gay people could have their own kids, like poor people, then there wouldn't really be anything the state can do to help the child unless they can be proven neglectful.

But if the state already "owns" the kid,it's there duty to put that kid in the best setting possible, that means no poor people, and no gay people (i say this not out of hate, but because only an idiot would say that growing up with two dads or two moms is the same as growing up with a "normal" family). It may not be fair to gay couples,or poor couples, but in the end it's not about them,it's about the child.

I mostly agree with you... but... Single parents are allowed to adopt, which I don't disagree with. I think a gay two-parent home would be more stable and a better option than a single mother/father.

i think it's really stupid that single parent's are allowed to adopt,in fact i've never heard of such a thing happening. He/she must have been living with someone else,or just really REALLY rich, enough to pay for a round the clock babysitter.

Poor people aren't made fun of as much as you think. Just because you're poor doesn't mean your life is stressful also.

What don't you understand about it? Either your logic can be used for everyone that can be made fun of, where you can then see why it doesn't work, or no one at all. Then it doesn't matter to begin with.

I have a few lesbian friends and they have had people call them dykes out loud on a public beach. but that was in a small town. I also know a guy that is very flamboyant that got beat up for being gay. I have never heard anybody call someone a nigger in person (out of hate). So personally I don't see them being similar it feels like gay/les people get made fun of more.

I understand what you're saying though. Keep in mind that I don't care if they adopt or get married i'm just trying to argue from an antigay's pov with my personal experiences.
