The internet has ruined the idea of feminism. It originally meant equality among ladies and men, not special treatment for one gender. But now look at what they've labeled feminists with; arrogance, ignorance, stupidity and general assholiness.
Now when I tell people I'm a feminist they get all bitchy at me and act like I'm less of a human. Fuck you internet.

Don't forget feminists USED to go for equality, now they claim to want equality, yet go for elitism, which ruins the entire idea of feminism.

As a female I agree wholeheartedly with Elizabeth. I understand my place in society, I have the right to vote and have any job I am qualified for. I can wear almost anything I like and not be judged for it because I'm a girl. I am happy with the rights that I have.
I have a boyfriend and I do what he asks, just as he does what I ask. I do like it when he opens doors for me once in a while or protects me but I don't expect it and I do these things for him in return.
What I'm trying to say is, not all girls demand "respect" and special treatment and there are girls who are just as pissed off about feminism than you.
I would probably get feminists telling me that I'm a disgrace and I'm letting men take advantage but I'm not, if I had been born a couple of hundreds of years ago I would have had no rights to anything so I'm lucky.

Sounds like you are a feminist to me (and good on you)

You've just had a warped view of what feminism is.
User avatar #94 to #86 - mrssammich (07/29/2012) [-]
In terms of what feminism was originally, yes I would say I am, but I don't like the term feminist, I'm not part of a special group of people, I'm just a normal person. And these days quite a few "feminists" are becoming increasingly annoying and giving all other feminists and women a bad reputation. I realise I didn't make this clear but my comment was aimed at the minority that use feminism as a shield for hypocrisy and sexism.

Then why is the prefix Fem- in Feminism?
It should be Equal-ism/
User avatar #23 to #7 - dontexpectmuch (07/28/2012) [-]
put simply feminism is a movement that preaches equality yet focuses solely on the issues faced by one sex
User avatar #22 to #7 - sketchysketchist ONLINE (07/28/2012) [-]
Let's not also forget that feminism is a bunch of women saying they want equality such as equal pay as men, job oportunities, and the right to defend themselves from men but the moment a guy smacks a bitch or the place goes to flames, it's women and children first, right?
User avatar #21 to #7 - sketchysketchist ONLINE (07/28/2012) [-]
You know there are feminist trying to make it hard for women to want to be housewives, cheerleaders, or anything that stands by their typical gender rolls.
Honestly, equality is one thing but telling a woman she can't whore it up because this is a man's world is bullshit.

Then why is it that you never see feminists protesting to take away advantages women have, it's only ever to gain more rights for themselves. If they truly cared about equality they'd be pissed about having any advantages over men.

"Feminism is simply equality between men and women, nothing more, nothing less."
User avatar #10 to #7 - lostinthemusic ONLINE (07/28/2012) [-]
In a perfect world, yes.
Unfortunately a good size of the women in the current feminism movement aren't really looking for equality.
They want all of the good things. Like acceptance in the workplace, equal pay, an end to discrimination.
But they still want to use their bodies to get what they want. They still want to be taken care of. They still want to be treated as they are a dainty flower.

Take note I did not say all women are this way, but enough are that it really undermines the entire movement.
User avatar #61 to #10 - dastonarman (07/28/2012) [-]
They want economic equality, but not social equality

As a female, I agree with you fully. It disappoints me greatly to see fellow females like these everywhere I go. As a child, I was raised by a feminist mother, so that's possibly why I veered off and away from that type of thought. I was quite the tom-boy as a kid and even as I grew older I became "one of the guys". I have plenty of guy friends and fit in perfectly with them. I've even told them that if I ever engage in a fight with them, they have every right to hit me back if I throw the first punch.

Overall I believe in equality, not power for women over men. It makes me sad to know I'm that small percent of decent girls.
#12 to #10 - haggle (07/28/2012) [-]
I agree, to some extent.

In my experience, albeit rather limited, I haven't found the view you described that often. Far more common are women that just want equality. I think we can all agree that the 'feminists' that hate men etc. are just ridiculous.

Maybe it depends on what circles you move in, how often you come across each view, I'm not sure.
User avatar #8 to #7 - Lawlor (07/28/2012) [-]
What I don't get is if its' all about equality, why call it "feminism"?
A name implying that it's all about women.

Surely instead of feminism it would be "Equalism" or something.
#37 to #8 - toxicwarning (07/28/2012) [-]
sorry... already taken
User avatar #16 to #8 - thunderspeak (07/28/2012) [-]
I would say it's called feminism because at the current moment, unfortunately, women are lower on the totem pole. so they have more distance to move up. However, maybe if it was the other way around, if men were lower, a movement would rise and it would be called masculinism? 0_o just a thought
User avatar #17 to #16 - Lawlor (07/28/2012) [-]
Perhaps.
But in modern society most people are on a pretty equal playing ground these days.
It's mostly in countries like Saudi Arabia that womens rights are such an issue.
User avatar #18 to #17 - thunderspeak (07/28/2012) [-]
that's very true, those countries are the ones who really need some equality. Give those bitches some equality, bitches love equality XD I think if just more women played roles in the government of 1st world countries, the conflict over equality would settle down a lot. Plus, I know from a lot of my female friends, that they're fine with the current state of things except for the constant women 'jokes'. I put quotation marks because half the time they are, but half the time they're not and it's really difficult to differentiate many times... :/
#9 to #8 - haggle (07/28/2012) [-]
Excellent point and one I don't have a proper answer for.

I assume it's because traditionally women were treated much worse than men, and so it was more about improving women to men's status. I agree though 'equalism' or whatever is much more apt.
#11 to #9 - subaqueousreach (07/28/2012) [-]
