Most Fjers believe just because they're atheist, that they're smart. Most of them however lack conventional logic.

Believing in a talking snake isn't a sign of conventional logic either.

I'm not religious. And I was just stating that many of the kiddies who say they're atheist just to be cool or to bash christians usually are hypocrites
#847 to #837 - anonymous (07/22/2012) [-]
Well, excuse me but religion is sooooooo last century and we atheists like to keep up with the latest trends that our families disprove cos we r rebels n' cool.

The absence of evidence is not the evidence of absence
User avatar #876 to #730 - noblexfenrir (07/22/2012) [-]
This is true, but evidence of absence isn't sufficient to make a claim of existence.

Also the problem with this phrase is it comes off the same idea as the theists who use "schroedingers cat" as a way to prove god as a possibility. That he is possible because of the laws of probability. When in actuality this makes him impossible because something can only exist within a confined space if it is possible in that confined space. So a creator who is said to have made the space, cannot be directly connected to it through probability.

Basically: Yes, the absence of evidence is not evidence of absence, except with beings outside of probability, like god.

Firstly, don't patronize me for asking a question.
Secondly, I was merely giving thought to how one would actually go about finding evidence of interaction from a deity considering that nobody actually knows where or how to look.

Joking, actually.

Also I was religious once. Uniting Church christian born and raised. I was taught the bible, I listened to the sermons, I prayed.

Then I went to University.
My first day I was taught critical thinking and scientific method. I began to apply these tools and decided for myself that I no longer believed in god.

I looked in my heart and found logic and reason, not god.
I assure you, this makes me every part a good, happy person as you.
User avatar #1006 to #814 - riotbringer (07/22/2012) [-]
well thats fine and all, I'm happy for you but you should have never lost faith in God

Why not?
User avatar #1016 to #1011 - riotbringer (07/22/2012) [-]
because its good to be in touch with God
User avatar #775 to #753 - vladone (07/22/2012) [-]
so in lack of any evidence or possible sources you chose to believe what has been given to you by your elders i asume? why?

I don't. I'm an agnostic atheist.
User avatar #784 to #778 - vladone (07/22/2012) [-]
sorry, it's my fault i didn't express myself clearly. i was talking purely theoretical, as you did. and i'm an agnostic also. please don't interpret what i said personally

Animals repeat the actions of their parents. It's nature.
If you're taught something by your parents, you'll believe it's true unless you find suitable evidence to the contrary.

Religious people are sometimes taught to 'hold fast in their faith' when presented with evidence or arguments against what their parents have taught them. They are taught that science is simply the devil trying to corrupt them.

Let me put it this way; a religious person prays for something to occur.

Let's say for sake of the example that it's an apple falling off of a tree.
The apple then proceeds to fall off the tree.
Logical thinking would immediately proceed to the fact that the timing was a coincidence. The religious person would argue that it was caused by their god.

Logic points to the fact that it is the end of the fruit-bearing season an the apple would have fallen anyway, they can point to the weakened stem of the apple and gravity overpowering the opposing force of the stem.
They can point to any number of logical, provable facts as to why the apple has fallen. Yet the religious person can still take any one of those steps and say that it was caused by their god. That their god willed those steps into action.

How would one find evidence that these steps were not willed into action by a superior being? I realize it's a pointless thing to consider and it could no doubt be proved wrong easily. I'm simply wondering for the sake of wondering.

True.
But if the sun did not come up, even then, it's not direct proof of a deity.

My torch doesn't work, so I replace the batteries and the torch begins to work. This does not actually indicate that the previous batteries were flat. It's merely the easiest to reach conclusion.
Perhaps the top had not been correctly screwed on and by removing it and replacing it I had completed the circuit. Perhaps the lightbulb had been loose, perhaps a wire was out of place.

There are any number of possibilities other than the one that is easiest to reach, yet the easiest to reach one is the one assumed correct. However, as the torch is now working there is no possible way of figuring out which of the possibilities was actually correct.

Religion and science are, literally, polar opposites.

Religion relies heavily on faith and does not take into account measurable effects or things which can be observed.
Science relies entirely on measurable effects and things which can be observed, there is no room for faith in science.

It is essentially impossible to have societies where these two groups mix without them conflicting.

simply because you don't have evidence that something does exist does not mean that you have evidence that something doesn't exist
User avatar #755 to #752 - techketzer (07/22/2012) [-]
While that is true, there is no point in believing something does exist when you have no evidence for it.
#720 - anonymous (07/22/2012) [-]
That's basically what's said but I've never once heard anybody flip out when they say you can't prove he isn't real. Plus if God was in somebody's pocket then the whole argument of is there a God or not would have ended thousands of years ago cuz someone would have just taken it out. The comic does not accurately depict the situation which is why I gave it a red thumb, not because I disagree with the statement (I'm an atheist, but I respect other view points and think other people should too), it was just argued very poorly.

If you cannot absolutely prove, nor disprove something without tangible evidence then all you have is a hypothesis. Ergo you cannot claim it to be truth, nor lies.
