Am I the only one who feels nothing for the Walking Dead characters? I mean, if one of them dies I'm like "Meh, who cares?". Usually on other shows I care for some characters, but not on this show.
User avatar #19789 to #19769 - eight (03/11/2014) [-]
I care about the characters. I hated when Merle died. Even Andrea, who I largely disliked, I felt a little for when she died because she had just started to become interesting. Herschel was devastating, but I expected him to go two seasons ago, so it was no surprise and it was a good death. Lori sucked, glad she died, but the way she went out was horrible and that gave me the feels. T-Dog's death was ridiculous, a good character wasted with an off-screen death.

All this being said, this second half of season 4 has been down hill, but I guess that's because of the dramatic change in plot, setting and even character attitudes. I'm just now starting to get used to it, but they need to stop with the filler episodes.
User avatar #19776 to #19769 - alecbaldwinning (03/11/2014) [-]
I've been steadily losing interest in the show since halfway through season 3. I'm probably going to give it one or two more episodes to impress me before I stop wasting time on it.

Anybody seen Fringe, here? I recently finished the series and loved it. I thought it had good writing, too.

I got my dad to watch the pilot, and he said he hated it, and that it was just really bad, with the writing, acting, directing and the plot.
I don't remember the pilot too much, but I will watch it again, to see what I think, but I do remember liking the pilot.

So what are people's thoughts on the series, and what was it's good/bad points - particularly the pilot?
User avatar #19756 to #19755 - eight (03/10/2014) [-]
Anyone that judges a show by the pilot doesn't know the first thing about story. It would be like reading the first chapter of a book and assuming the rest is awful just because the beginning was. Stories take time to develop, generally I give a show three episodes to hook me. Just like I give three chapters for a novel.

Fringe really is great. It's this generations X-Files (actually I like it more than X-Files). The story gets to be so epic.
User avatar #19790 to #19756 - mintea (03/11/2014) [-]
Agreed, on the most part, though a first episode should do its best to hook somebody (especially a 1 hour 20 minute one.)

I watched it again, and I can see his point. The pilot could have been much better. I wouldn't call the acting terrible, but there wasn't much acting worthy of praise in episode 1 - my dad is into the performances of the actors in particular, where as it doesn't matter too much for me.

The overall writing and story is very good, though, and the acting does get much better particularly John Noble's acting (Walter)

User avatar #19814 to #19806 - beatmasterz (03/12/2014) [-]
Are you kidding me? It was the least Lovecraftian. Lovecraftian means a dense, cosmic atmosphere where the unknown and the supernatural is peeking around the corner. As soon as it was established that the fat dude on the lawnmower was the guy, all tension disappeared.
User avatar #19828 to #19814 - herecomesjohnny (03/12/2014) [-]

fucking hell Walking Dead

Daryl is going to die soon
He's Beth's sorta-3rd-boyfriend, he was sleeping in a coffin with no one at his funeral, and Beth said she wouldn't need him.

That ending tho, Daryl is back in a gang, they might be the Hunters from the comics
#19744 to #19727 - lungeroy (03/10/2014) [-]
I think the hunters might be the people behind terminus, using the signs for safe shelter as a way to trick people into coming to them. what was the deal with the cross on the car that took Beth?
User avatar #19758 to #19744 - awesomerninjathing ONLINE (03/10/2014) [-]
pretty sure Terminus is the Alexandria Safe Zone

the hearse is most likely Gabriel the priest from the comics
#19782 to #19758 - lungeroy (03/11/2014) [-]
no, I think that Alexandria is in Washington like in the comics, and that Abraham, Rosita and Eugene takes the group there, like in the comics. If Terminus is Alexandria, that would mean Negan isn't far from there, and to put put Negan in the same area as the Governor would make it seem like they had no idea on where to guide the show. Two evil groupleaders that close? A lot of fans wouldn't like that, seeing as they dragged out the whole Governor story quite a bit.
User avatar #19739 to #19727 - eight (03/10/2014) [-]
That was the same group Rick encountered in the house. The question is, according to the timeline, was Daryl with the group in the house while Rick was under the bed, or did this meetup occur after Rick escaped?
#19745 to #19739 - anonymous (03/10/2014) [-]
Its clearly after.
User avatar #19749 to #19745 - eight (03/10/2014) [-]
Somebody on IMDB pointed out that it looked like the man who was strangled next to the bed was standing with the group...alive. So I'm not sure it's clear at all.
#19778 to #19749 - uryui (03/11/2014) [-]
You're not gunna kill a man just to sleep on a bed, the guy on the toilet was the one who died and turned.
#19807 to #19778 - lungeroy (03/11/2014) [-]
it was the guy who was strangled who turned, not the guy in the bathroom.
User avatar #19787 to #19778 - eight (03/11/2014) [-]
Right, because strangling people makes so much sense just to sleep on a bed.
#19791 to #19787 - uryui (03/11/2014) [-]

Furthermore wouldn't it be better if the person had saw Rick was still alive and if they see him the'll be a confrontation?
User avatar #19792 to #19791 - eight (03/11/2014) [-]
I think there would be the more likely confrontation between the man and the one who strangled him, probably resulting in a death or banishment from the group. Just doesn't make sense.

Just finished watching all the Futurama seasons and realized something weird. I remember watching an episode a long time ago when I was younger where there was "time jumps" that skipped time and Fry and Leela ended up marrying and Fry was trying to figure it out how he made Leela fell in love with him ( he wrote "I love you Leela" with stars or something ) but now, after watching all seasons, I didn't find that episode.

Just finished watching American Horror Story: Coven
Man, that shit was great. Now this is how you do a story about Witches!
I used to watch Charmed; and I mean... I'll pretty much watch anything to do with Witches... But man was that show shit.
The first season was decent, and then there were select episodes that were absolutely amazing (like the one when they go to a future where witches have been discovered and witch burning is a thing)
But I'm not going to go into a rant about all the things wrong with it. Go and watch Obscurus Lupa's videos on Charmed; I agree with most of her points.

Back to the matter at hand; AHS: Coven was amazing! It was a great story filled to the brim with themes of age, womanhood, vanity, power, and basic jealousy and how it was basically destroying the very fabric of the Coven, and what they all believe to be a dying breed dying off even further because of these things.
Plus, Stevie Nicks is in it, as a Witch version of herself; and she randomly sings some songs in some of the final episodes... I mean, fucking hell, that's awesome!

I have to disagree. The writing for season 3 was incredibly poor. Characters were either completely useless or vastly wasted. Plot points that should have been expanded upon were not. And then you have the constant backstabbing between the characters. The nonsensical character actions, the "shock" deaths and then the rushed ending.
User avatar #19720 to #19713 - tvfreakuk (03/09/2014) [-]
I felt that the constant backstabbing was kind of the point.
Like I said, it's a story about sisterhood, but how stupid they're all being in petty rivalries and quarrels; even though it was putting them all in danger at what they believe to be the end of the very existence of witches.
User avatar #19721 to #19720 - eight (03/09/2014) [-]
I'm talking about the mechanics of how it was written. From a plot perspective, the quality was atrocious. Backstabbing is fine in any story, but when it becomes constant, as it is in AHS, it becomes cliche and usually points to having a lack of material to write. This sort of melodrama is not welcome unless it is meant to be satire.

It is getting as bad as the old show "Heroes".
#19732 to #19721 - tvfreakuk (03/10/2014) [-]
Yeah you are right...
I'm just biased as fuck.
Because witches.
Like I said in my original comment, I absolutely love anything to do with witches; and I'm very blind to any problems it has; unless it's 100% glaringly, horribly obvious... And even then I'll still like it. Because witches... Also Stevie Nicks..)

Asylum was honestly the best out of all three seasons so far, it definitely ticked all the boxes for creativity, and well developed characters that you actually wanted to survive what was happening - rather than everyone absolutely backstabbing everyone else.
Still, I just feel... Even though you are kind of right about the constant backstabbing not really being a good way to go about a story - I just feel it works here, in this story specifically for Coven... I'm not sure why. Probably just that I honestly found the motivations believable from children (young adults) moving through to adulthood (and more specifically, girls "flowering" into womanhood - and if you want to make a connection to Wicca; Maiden to Mother) and the bitterness and vanity of the older woman (or for Wicca; the "Crone") - and then even the resignation and guilt of the older woman (when Fiona was begging Madison to kill her, or when she was begging Cordelia to end her suffering in the last episode) especially in a high tension environment and the war nearly breaking between the Witches and the Voodoo, and basically how the girls feel

I've also been learning about how to portray power balance in my film course at uni recently and when I rewatch the episodes I can really see the constant struggle for power in character actions and motivations - that's really both a directorial and acting quality for the show too

Also technically speaking; I think that all three seasons are simply sublime in cinematography standards - although I was a little put off by the random use of fish eye lenses every now and then. It looked nice sometimes, but most of the time when it popped up I was like "wat?"
User avatar #19734 to #19732 - eight (03/10/2014) [-]
I disagree with there being well well developed characters. I did not see much of it. And what was given was not very relevant much of the time. The only characters that are well developed are Fiona, Cordelia and Mrytle, the latter two having about half as much development as Fiona. There were many other cast members and they got the short end of the stick. There were also inconsistencies and plot errors throughout the season, a lot of which have been discussed on the IMDB forums. I hated the Stevie bits, I felt embarrassed for her and the show.

I also did not like the pacing of the series either, especially in the finales of all three seasons.

I don't know much about cinematography to be honest, so I'll take your word for it. Writing is my field.
