here are a few that come to mind: sons of anarchy, mad men, house md, arrested development, fargo, its always sunny in philadelphia, game of thrones, boardwalk empire, the office, parks and recreation, house of cards, avatar the last airbender, orange is the new black, true detective, scrubs, & the walking dead

those are a lot of god damn shows that everyone always says I absolutely need to watch. the ones in bold are actually ones you really should watch if you haven't already. and if you've seen all of these then you're in for another long list of underrated shows that no one talks about.

Penny Dreadful (Perfects dark drama)
Spartacus (Give it a few episodes to get good, after that it's amazing)
Fringe (Better than the X-Files, many say. I agree)
The Lost World (Old, campy, but sweet and innocent. Give it a few episodes and the acting improves. Hard to find, so I added a link. The Lost World Season 1 Episode 1 Pilot Part 1 )
Hemlock Grove
Episodes (Hilarious)
Hannibal (A MUST see)
Jericho (Didn't finish the story, but a damn good two seasons)
Vikings (Getting more popular, but needs a lot more love. Underrated.)
Da Vincis Demons (Fun show if you can get past the historical and logical errors.)
Continuum (One of the better time travel shows. Confusing at time though.)
The 100 (Good sci-fi. Much better second season so far)
Person of Interest (Used to be more popular, but it's drifted. Still very good)
#27045 to #27044 - hirollin (01/06/2015) [-]
Tfw i've seen most of those too. Penny Dreadful seems unfamiliar, however if by dark you mean horor I'm not really interested. I initially didn't like vikings, watched an episode or two, but I might pick that up again.
User avatar #27046 to #27045 - eight (01/06/2015) [-]
It depends on what you mean by horror. I mean, I suppose it's a horror type show, dealing with vampires, frankenstein, werewolves, demons, but it's not very scary.

It's similar to the darkness of Hannibal. It deals with serious character emotions, often negative and dramatic. Very intense, not much room for hope, love or anything that would make a show lighthearted.

As for Vikings, it might be worth a shot to give it another try. First season was low budget so not much action, second season has a lot more action and continues with its character depth.
User avatar #27047 to #27046 - hirollin (01/06/2015) [-]
Yeah, werewolf's and vamps and stuff like that really were never my thing. I've given plenty of shows with them a shot, but that whole genre along with the horror genre have never really been my cup of tea. I might give Hannibal a shot, I do enjoy character driven shows, but I was never a fan of the movies or the cannibal idea in general.

Well I could've told you that. Why do you think that?
User avatar #27030 to #27026 - hirollin (01/05/2015) [-]
Every movie that she is in that is good I feel she brings down to a worse level. She is always the weakest link in movies. There is always someone I feel who could not only do her role better, but exponentially so. I've watched her go from a seemingly no name actress to a big star with little reason as to why, her work certainly didn't speak for it which leads me to believe that she must have acquired it by other means. I also don't think of her as a serious actress in general, there have been quotes said by her that support this.

I remember seeing her back in one of her first films mars attacks. She just played a dopey attractive teenager, she didn't do it well and she certainly wasn't funny. She was just a mantlepiece that for some reason people thought was attractive (never found her attractive at all in the slightest)

Thor has to be one of the worst movies I've seen in years, easily the worst superhero movie out of the new trend of them. That's not entirely her fault, but once I saw her onscreen I knew that this movie would be a piece of shit, yet still for some reason hoped that it wouldn't.

Back in the day, the biggest news for V for Vendeta wasn't her acting talent it was for her willingness to shave her own head for the part. As if that was some trial and tribulation as an actress. No one cared how well she did in that movie, just that she shaved her head for it.

Could go on forever, but relooking at her imdb list I'd say that speaks for itself. A lesbian makeout scene and a shaved head are her best movies, both of which could have been done by better by a different actress.

Always said if someone is thinking about hireing Portman, they should just hire Knightley instead, she is far superior in terms of both talent and looks imo.
User avatar #27035 to #27030 - thedudeistheman ONLINE (01/05/2015) [-]
Well I have to disagree with you. I'm not a huge fan of Thor, but plenty of people agree that V For Vendetta is a good movie, and Black Swan was acclaimed (I really liked it too). You could view a shaved head as devotion to a role, and the lesbian part of Black Swan is like a two minute sequence in a 108 minute film that explores much more than just a girl kissing another girl. She was also in Leon: The Professional, and while I haven't seen it, I know for a fact that many people think that's an excellent movie. Sure, she's been in some bad movies, but plenty of excellent actors and actresses have been in bad movie. I'm not saying she's the greatest actresses to ever live, but I do think that she's pretty darn good.

Man... I really didn't like Nymphomaniac all that much.
In terms of cinematography - I actually thought it was great, a lot of fantastic compositions, great lighting, and an eccentric number of styles throughout each part of the narrative.

But this isn't the be all and end all of a movie when the story is lacking. It was just ultimately boring in all.
The entire film is Joe telling her story and self-deprecating as a lesser human, or just an all around bad person - and then Seligman interrupting the story to make some form of analogy or metaphor that connects some literary or historic event to her story and telling her that she isn't a bad person for what she's done. Coming down to the idea, "Is it bad to be a slut?"
The worst part of this aspect was when she told him about how she sucked some guy off on the train so she could win a bag of chocolates from a bet with her friend - even after he begged her not to because he was going to see his wife who was ovulating so they could try and have a baby. Then Seligman is like "Well, you probably did a good thing - because that way his sperm will be fresher when he actually has sex with his wife" (I can't remember what technical jargon words he used, but that was the gist of it) and that she actually helped the man.
So? She didn't know that - she was still the person who thought winning the chocolate was more important than this guy wanting a baby; the fact she might have inadvertently helped him doesn't matter.

I liked in Volume 2 we find out that Seligman is asexual, as I just thought it funny that it kind of makes them polar opposites with her being a nympho, and as he stated; the most unbiased person to listen to her story.
CONT.

I kinda liked the message; about a woman taking her pleasure into her own hands and not giving a fuck what people think - like some kind of dirty version of Frozen. But the end result is so glib and boring while trying to be shocking and controversial.
But it just rings hollow and biased. It tried to make the argument at the end of "How do you think people would react if it was a man searching for women to fuck on a train, or a man living the life she lived?" and saying she's unfairly persecuted - but if a man acted like that, people would call him a pig! He wouldn't have had the exact same persecution as Joe had, but he still would have - guys would still be pissed if he was fucking their girlfriends, and women wouldn't like him other than the ones that actually had sex with him.
The film tries to make out that men will be rewarded and highly regarded for living the same life as Joe, but it really wouldn't - and I found it actually kind of insulting, and pandering to the "strong independent woman" demographic

And I didn't like the ending at all where Seligman tries to fuck her and she shoots him. Again, it goes to the message of her taking pleasure into her own hands and then after she just said she didn't want to do it anymore and he wanted to fuck her anyway, so she says "No" and doesn't let him use her - but it just doesn't make sense. He stated he was asexual and didn't like sex, so why? And it ruined such a nice moment after she said Seligman was probably her first and only true friend.

It has some genuinely funny moments - like when Seligman says "If you have wings; why not fly?", basically meaning "If you have a vagina; why not use it?"
And the god damn ridiculous scene where she was a child and had a "spontaneous orgasm" and was visited by the spirits of Mary Magdalene and the Whore of Babylon - that was funny.
But again, mostly boring.
User avatar #26979 to #26978 - hirollin (01/04/2015) [-]
well you just saved me a good 4 hours. heard she actually fucked the guys in the movie. like for real real not for play play. disappointed by the pandering though, was hoping it would be the opposite and they wouldn't take the easy way out.

For me, the only interesting discussion they have is about pedophilia, which lasts about 5 minutes.
She's telling her story, where she has become a loanshark, and is trying to use her sexual knowledge to get a man to pay his debt. So she tells him sexual stories that have no affect, until she finally starts to tell him a sexual story involving a child and he slowly gets hard. While she does this, he actually starts crying and begs her to stop.

The thing that's interesting is, Seligman states that he finds pedophiles completely abhorrent and disgusting; which for the most part, I find relatable and agree with for obvious reasons.
But Joe makes the argument that a pedophile is something to be pitied, having a sexual need for something that's forbidden and wrong, but you can't help what you're sexually attracted to - and so, if you don't succumb to your desires (which again, is wrong; I don't want anyone to misunderstand and thinking I'm saying it's not wrong) and don't actually sexually abuse a child, you still live a life of misery and loneliness and self loathing, disgust, shame and hatred for what you feel. And she actually felt bad for coaxing it out of the guy, when he probably never admitted it even to himself his whole life until she showed up and shattered the illusion for him.
Joe uses a made up generalized statistic (probably made up, I'm not sure) of how like 5% of pedophiles actually abuse a child, whereas the other 95% will probably live a life of self loathing and shame, and possibly self denial

It was the same issue used in the show Being Human where the vampire character tries to only feed on "bad people" for a while and is about to kill a pedo - and it draws the parallel of how a pedophile has the same problem as a vampires blood lust, the vampire might feel bad about it; but it's an almost uncontrollable desire for them that they can't help.

Susan on friends was like a game of thrones character guest starring.

She knowingly is a lesbian, and has a three way with Ross and his wife for the sole purpose of fucking the wife.
Continues to have an affair with his wife for an undisclosed amount of time.
Takes literally all of Ross's shit in the divorce.
When they find out the wife is pregnant with Ross's baby beforehand spends years of her life belittling, pressuring, straining, and being an all around cunt to Ross despite the fact that she LITERALLY ruined his marriage and life subsequently.
Meanwhile, Ross is a nice guy about it.

She is the best bad character ever. There is just so much shit going on with this little guest character with limited screen time, dealing with huge issues in a tv14 manner. This is why people liked this show, because they even managed to make something like someones life being ruined and cuckholding hilarious.

So I just watched Synecdoche New York, and it was pretty good.
When I first started watching it, I was like nigga what the fuk is going on. But as the movie went on, you start to get more of what is going on. Most of the movie is up to interpretation, and since the actual creator never comments on what is true or not, it makes for a very interesting conversation since you can talk to anyone who has watched it and they may not even have been close to what you were thinking it was and yet you will both not be wrong. Worth at least one watch, though there are plenty of cool things to see that you will probably miss the first time.

I saw this about a week ago. It was an interesting, albeit, sort of boring movie.

I figure he was dead, hence a lot of his medical problems, his obsessions with dying, and creating something that has a lasting impact on the world. His time jumps, time confusion, personality confusion and the ever increasing space of his life-size model of New York. It's as if it's a dream, perhaps the last moments of his real-life death, where in this dream world, he succeeds in his creation and imagination. When he dies in the movie on that bench and the play ends, he dies in real life.

It's sort of like that story "An Occurrence At Owl Creek Bridge", at least that's where I drew a lot of comparisons.

Saw House of Flying Daggers. It's a movie I remember seeing on the previews back on the old dvd's and maybe even vcr, but I never got around to seeing it. I imagine that the special fx blew everyone away back in 04, but they still hold up amazingly today.
