Except Britain didn't start off as one of the biggest empires ever, first it was exactly where it is in the second part of the picture minus the Falklands,

And even today it still has 14 constituent nations that acknowledge that Britain is their leader.

As well as the commonwealth of nations that see the British royal family to have some significant link to their own current nation, even if it only is ceremonial.

Lend - Lease saved Britain in WW2. And they took back Falklands from Argentina (OMG SO IMPRESSIVE). Britain is sooo obsessed with their past because they have no future.

Argentina didn't take the Falklands, they invaded the locals resisted the British task force turned up and fucked them royally. Secondly Bomber and fighter command saved Britain during WW2 not Lend-Lease

I'm no "America saved the day so kiss our ass" kind of guy, but without the US lend-lease, the UK would've ran our of material to fight with. Bullets, ammunition, food, etc.

Hell, most Commonwealth vehicles were redesigned American vehicles. (Ex. Sherman Tank).

The US loaned so much shit to the allies that the UK was sunk with debt, mostly owed to America.

And besides, the Soviets beat Germany being that nearly 90% of all German casualties came from the Eastern front. That's counting civilians, and the RAF/USAF slaughtered German civilians by the millions.

Despite Building the Empire the sun never set on? Been the country that science for hundreds of years was free to explore and experiment, being the place for great cultural advancement ranging from theatre to punk music. Created photography. The telephone. Television. and the turbojet engine. National heroes being, William Wallace, Sir Francis drake, William Shakespeare, Isaac Newton, Arthur Wellesley. Who all accomplished seemingly impossible feats in their respective fields. But your right Britain obviously didn't contribute anything to the world.
User avatar #215 to #202 - thewildcat (07/13/2012) [-]
Though this is going to get me thumbed down to oblivion I'm going to say it anyways.
Britain did not invent the telephone, nor did they invent TV. Photography was in fact invented by a French scientist.
I kind of find it ironic that the British brag about their former empire and yet continue to criticize the US for being "imperial." But I digress.
William Wallace fought for Scottish independence and was tortured and killed by the English. Don't know if you're English or Scottish but saying "British" hero is kind of the exact opposite of what he was fighting for.
I also saw your comment earlier about "America doing so brilliantly" and I would like to point out that the UK is in a stage of almost total economic collapse.
You also make fun of the US for SOPA but I would like to point out your Digital Economy Act is pretty much everything SOPA was supposed to be.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Economy_Act_2010
User avatar #227 to #215 - formidableguy (07/13/2012) [-]
I didn't bring up SOPA, Britain's economy is only as close to collapse as Frances Germany or Americas, infact its better than Frances atm. Television was created by John Logie Baird a Scotsman, William henry Fox Talbot went on to patent and create early developments for photography before Louis Dagurre even played with the idea of photography. And I said National heroes, heroes from all nations off GB, Northern Island, my place of birth, Wales where I currently live, Scotland and England, William Wallace a national Hero of Scotland died to ensure Scotland was not a slave nation to England and through the act of union 1707 Scotland and England were seen as being equal, something William Wallace supported. And I did not criticise the US For being Imperialist. Also Alexander Graham bell designed and invented the Modern telephone, but not the earliest principles or designs, but the modern phone can be traced to him. So i apologise for not making that clear.
User avatar #269 to #227 - thewildcat (07/13/2012) [-]
theeconomiccollapseblog.com/archives/tag/u-k-economy
Louis Dagurre invented the first permanent methods of photography, or at least the first ones that actually worked.
Act of Union declared the King to be Scottish, but as of now (and since then) Scots have not felt that they have received "equal" treatment. This is one of the main reasons the SNP has decided to hold a vote for Scottish independence in 2014. Wallace I know wanted Scotland to be free, equal maybe, but as many Scots did and still do today, see the Act of Union of 1707 as the Nobles selling them out to the English for money and power.
My point is what the British make fun of the US for, such as SOPA and being imperialist. Not you but I've seen it many times.
Bell was Scottish I know, but he patented the idea in Canada right before an American did. (Some speculate he stole the idea from the American but no matter). But he didn't invent it until he came to the US and had the help of his American colleagues. I can tell that you're already well educated and that I don't need to bring up the fact that the first phone call was recorded in Boston.
Also as far as the television goes: In 1911, Boris Rosing and his student Vladimir Zworykin created a television system that used a mechanical mirror-drum

War isn't like a school fight. If we decided to attack Britain for no reason, it's friends aren't gonna stand there and watch the fight. And our friends aren't gonna help us out when 90% of Europe kicks our ass.

But if we WERE stupid enough to elect people who would suddenly just turn on one of our largest allies (and I don't doubt the stupidity of the human race), then I would've left anyway and lost all care in the matter. A suicidal country has nothing to offer me.

You say war is so simple that we would just wage war and it would automatically be a 1 vs. 1 fight, with all of the people standing behind the act, and all of the other nations just standing aside and letting the conflict just happen.

That's literally the equivalent of saying Bruce Banner would automatically kick Tony Stark's ass if they fought butt naked.
That would never happen, War is not that simple, and it wouldn't just simply be one fight.

Not exactly. Canada is doing fine. As a matter of fact, we just celebrated Dominion Day (commonly known as Canada Day, the day Canada got recognized as a Dominion under the British Empire). This meant that Canada was recognized as Canada, and not British North America. We still celebrate this day - July 1st - as a day that we gained some independence from Britain, BUT we are still a Constitutional Monarchy. This means the Queen holds the highest power in Canada, second to God (as written in the Constitution). Then after WWI, we became recognized globally as a country, not a colony or a want-a-be country (after the Battle of Vimy Ridge in 1917). In 1965, we got our present flag of the Maple Leaf. We got rid of the Red Ensign (similar to the British merchant naval flag). Then, in 1982, we gained almost 100% independence from the British, BUT we can still join the British navy, army, and air force without hindrance. We also maintained the Constitutional Monarchy, but we have our own Constitution that was introduced that year: The Charter of Rights and Freedoms. We still have a Governor General; the Prime Minister appoints our Senate; when the Queen is not around to pass our Bills into Laws, the Governor General does. Without the Royal Seal from the Queen or Governor General, all Bills - even from the provinces and territories - cannot become law. The Queen, along with the Governor General, can dissolve parliament if Canadians do not want the present party in control anymore (vote of non-confidence).

Well, to sum up what I have been saying: No. She does not fully rule us.

(Not meant to start a shitstorm)
#168 to #137 - N. Korean citizen (07/13/2012) [-]
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that the Governor General's role is purely ceremonial now. S/he is obliged to sign anything that parliament approves (i.e. has absolutely no say whatsoever). This came about as the result of a conflict between Mackenzie King and the GG Lord Bing. King wanted something done. Bing said "F*** you." The government switched over to the Conservatives who lost a vote 3 days later, which caused the entire parliament to dissolve and handed it right back to Mackenzie King. To avoid any such debacle again, it was made so that the Governor General had no say whatsoever.
User avatar #357 to #168 - alexthecanadian (07/13/2012) [-]
He still needs to sign all Bills before they can become law. He also has the power to dissolve parliament. He can still say no to Bills.

None of this changes the fact that the Christians here have major influence in many things in politics...
I'm not talking about officials that are christian but the christian people (yes i said government but I didn't mean it literally). They have more influence than those that may be Muslim, atheist, etc.

meh. the pres. has finally accepted gays into military service. abortion is still legal. if the religious had such a sway, im sure these two things at least would be different. what specific 'religious oppression' do you feel? that side is always pushing, i give you that, but the other side is pushing back. the school voucher idea is just a thinly veiled way to get us to pay for parochial schools so folks can teach their kids creation 'science' but i dont think its going to fly unless things change drastically in november.

Like.. I remember hearing about some people trying to get schools to teach creationist ideals and removing ideas of evolution in textbooks. Complete bullshit.

Did I ever say I hated American people or America in general? I talk to quite a few and most of them are great, funny, intelligent people. It's people like you that lower the average intelligence of your country to the point where it makes you whole place look stupid. You ever see the episode of south park where Cartman fails gym and brings the whole class down with him, It kind of sums up my point.

No one here hates Americans, no one here hates British people. This is the internet where we mock every nation, race and religion. But in the end we all are equal, because we mock each other as equals. You are being criticized for you poorly thought out, and badly written post.
