Why don't the English celebrate the 4th of July?

Because the French will have to celebrate 'White Flag Day'.
User avatar #367 to #276 - mcassio ONLINE (07/05/2012) [-]
No, they dont celebrate it because it was a horrible day for them. the 4th of july, if you know anything about american history, was the day that the declaration of independence was signed and sent to the king of britain. this was the day they officially lost control over america, and it was a disaster for them. the resources they sunk into trying and failing to reclaim america not once but twice almost ruined them, and left them open to war on other fronts as well.

>french hear fireworks
>they surrender
i don't see how people don't see that joke
User avatar #400 to #396 - mcassio ONLINE (07/05/2012) [-]
because its fireworks. that, and if you do it every year, its kind of expected. not only that, we arent talking about people in the same room, we are talking about seperate countries. it wouldnt be possible for anyone in france to hear or see the fireworks except the border villages.

I was born and raised in England until I was 14, then moved to Washington, US. (That was 4 years ago).

I'll admit that I've had some issues with the place, especially some of the people and hardcore "patriots" that are pretty much just US Nationalists saying that the U.S. is better than everyone else. But on the 4th, I realized how important it was to so many people to celebrate their independence. It's not as if they were treated bad as a colony, but getting absolute independence is a pretty big thing - It's like a teenager finally growing up and experiencing the world on his/her own. So I hope all of the Americans of FJ had a great 4th, may many more come your way as your country grows.

Their whole independence is based on tax evasion... the nationalists that think it was anything more than rich yanks avoiding tax by breaking away from the UK are absofuckinglutely retarded
#272 to #251 - ragged (07/05/2012) [-]
Actually it was caused by unfair taxes the British imposed in order to rebuild funds after the French-Indian War and various other conflicts.

- The Stamp Act
- The Sugar Act
- The Quartering Act
- The Tea Act

Then came the closing of Boston's ports, etc.
User avatar #284 to #272 - mrsockz (07/05/2012) [-]
And they refused to let them expand onto the new land after the french and indian war or give them true representation in parliament, if the king had reduced taxes and given them a seat in parliament so they would be properly represented the revolution would have never happened.

You can do that and I would think it was very funny, but you should be careful about who you piss off because gun control here is shit...

Yup, two hundred years really isn't that long. We're not some ever-present power or anything. But gaining independence was kind of a major part of our history.
