Well considering if you lived in those times and was brought up back in those times, you would have thought 'that's just how things go' such as you do today. Sure people disagreed with it, but nobody really did anything because that's how society works, just like today. I'm sure in 40 to 50 years, people will look back in this generation and think 'Wow, they did what to them?' It's all the way the world (and government) plan to make things work, by changing laws and whatnot. It's rather confusing, but I hope it made sense.
