I don't normally reply on morbid channels, but as there's nothing about this in the comments, I thought I'd shed some knowledge.
Basically the operated leg is now shorter. The foot is at the knee level (in comparison to the other leg). Once said person wears a prostetic limb, it will be infinitely times easier for that person to bend their "knee" and as such will be able to eventually return to a semi-normal state of being able to walk, possibly even run.
TL;DR it's a functioning joint with muscle contracting capabilities.
