Ghangus Khan killed the most dumb **** . He took out 8 percent of the world population.

Khan killed 30-40 million..that was around 6% of the population
User avatar #420 to #408 - Zhex (06/13/2012) [-]
I do hope you understand that the world's population was ALOT less back then then it is today, so 8% of maybe 10-20million isnt all that much.

To be fair in China at the time these deaths were not welll docutmented or not recorded at all asmost of the deaths were due to starvation during the great leap forward which was meant to increase industry but ended making things worse and food shortages which Mao ignored for a while as he wanted people to think the GLF was going fine. Also figure vary greatly as they are mainly taken from one region and applied to the others and China's regions are very different places so it is not fair to take measurements like that. But he still definately killed more than any other dictator.

But the dictators all ruled for different amounts of time so to do this more accurately would be to measure it in average kills every year.

Pol Pot may not have killed that many people, but percentage-wise, he killed more of his own people than any other dictator in history. I can't remember the exact number, but it was upwards of 40-60%. The only reason Mao killed so many people is because the people were terrified of the government, so they lied to him about the number of crops they had, and when it came time to distribute them, as communism does, everyone starved because they had a lot less food than they thought. Other than that, I believe the people he actually killed that opposed him was relatively low in consideration. Most of them fled to modern-day Taiwan.

hey i'm cambodian, and pol pot did kill a lot of his own people, this post said 1.7mil but others have said 2mil, some said 2.6mil. there's no accurate number on this. if u ever come to cambodia go to S-21 prison

I've heard it's a very fascinating place to visit. My high school history teacher visited there a few times and he said it was very strange because you don't see many people between the ages of 30-60. The "killing fields" would probably be the most ominous if what he said was correct. Though he said the locals simply refer to it as "down by the river".

S-21 is pretty creepy if it's a bit dark out, go there at arnd 4pm on a dark day is scary. killing field is a more interesting place to visit. well cambodia is more than that, there's angkor wat which is amazing, on top of that the beach is nice. and you don't have to be over 21 to purchase or buy a drink :D

whats amazing is that Mao Zedong was so popular during his reign, even when he was killing these masses of people. He had the majority since he was fighting the japanese. dude was a master speaker, and he had all this propaganda going for him. all of china was litterally brainwashed, and those who wernt were either in taiwan or killed.
User avatar #406 to #398 - rploeger (06/13/2012) [-]
Same goes for Hitler kind of and especially Stalin. People were shouting his name as they got executed, indirectly by him. The thing is he was praised like a saint who saved the Russian Federation and they thought all the bloodshed was caused by the police and such without Stalin knowing.

although it's never fully proven , t is common belief stalin engineered the great famine in ukraine, killing around 20 million people.

in terms of the "worst" leader, if it wasn't for the japanese bombing pearl harbor hitler would've conquered europe, and would've likely taken over the US by force soon after.

Mao imo. Not only did he ****** a lot more, but starving is a slow death, and there's just no excuse if he's still producing food. I'm not saying Hitler and Stalin aren't as bad, but Mao is the worst if i had to pick

a couple of things about mao, (i studied him quite a bit at school)
1) China has many more people than all the other countries, u gotta think about proportions. Pol Pot exterminated a quarter of the population in almost no time
2) The number of dead vary between 30 and 78 million, and the higher number is generally considered to be a grave exageration
3) here's the tricky part, a large number of these dead were killed during the great leap forward (20-30 milion) and their death was not through sistematic killings like Hitler or Pol Pot but through starvation. the original intention of the great leap forward was to modernize the country but several structural problems of the plan (especially the lack of farmers free to do work in the fields) and the strong drought generated a massive lack of food. mao didn't kill them, they died because his plan worked wrong, which is a very different thing than if he just ordered them dead.
4) another major source of death, the cultural revoultion, also was mao's idea but again wasn't set out to kill people. it's original idea was to take away power from political oponents who were getting power following the failure of the great leap forward but it turned from a diffamation campaign into a mass hysteria, especially in urban areas, causing a total of around 1 million deaths, again not planned or wanted by mao.

in conclusion, mao wasn't really as bad as this chart sets it out to be, most of these deaths were caused by misunderstandings, not prosecution

You have to consider the size of their respective countries. Pol Pot killed "only" 1.7 million, but that was like one fourth of his country's population. Leopold II killed 10-15 million Congolese, which was something like half the population of the Congo Free State.

#367 to #356 - anonymous (06/13/2012) [-]
I think that you are very wrong. By saying that you have to consider the total population of the country in question, you are implying that in countries with larger populations, each human life is worth less.

Sorry, my comment was kind of misleading. I don't mean to say that the size of the tragedy depends on the size of the population. I mean that those who killed the most people may not have been the most evil dictators. Put Pol Pot in charge of China and he probably would have done a lot more damage than Mao did, seeing as Pol Pot intentionally killed anyone suspected of being educated, including anyone who wore glasses (which to him implied literacy), whereas many of Mao's victims were killed indirectly by things like starvation or suicide.

Belgium...had a dictator? i never knew that
User avatar #364 to #353 - Ruspanic (06/13/2012) [-]
He was a king. The 15 million deaths attributed to him were not Belgians. King Leopold ruled over the Congo Free State, which was basically his personal colony in Africa, and killed up to half of the Congolese population while exploiting the place for resources.

User avatar #374 to #350 - Ruspanic (06/13/2012) [-]
Get over it. Your argument is like saying Gaddafi shouldn't have been killed because he wasn't the only dictator. Kony's a terrible person and these kids mean well.

That said, there ARE legitimate reasons not to support Kony 2012. For one, Kony hasn't been in Uganda for years. Invisible Children supports sending US troops to train the Ugandan military to go after Kony, but there's no reason for them to do so if he's not in their country anymore. It'd just bring back needless violence. Plus, it's not a good idea to aid and equip a government that has its own history of committing atrocities and using child soldiers.

I did read your post. You are butthurt because "kony isn't the only one who has dont this" and "there are many others who had kidnapped kids for war yet he gets all the attention". Which is true, but a ******* ****** reason to be pissed off at Kony 2012. At least they're trying to do something.

They aren't doing **** besides raising money...the African people of Uganda, South Sudan, Central African Republic and Congo are the ones actually trying to find Kony.

The video doesn't even give the right location and Ugandans have criticized the damn thing for this very reason and others.
User avatar #426 to #410 - Ruspanic (06/13/2012) [-]
I know, I just meant that they have good intentions. I pointed out my issues with Kony 2012 in the post OoJesusoO replied to. I don't support the specific goals of Kony 2012 myself.

By the way, they aren't just raising money. Invisible Children has successfully lobbied the US Government, which is why Obama sent military advisers to Uganda last October. They also did a pretty good job raising awareness about Kony, though unfortunately they left their audience rather misinformed.
