Shit. No, but seriously, it isn't rock. No Guitar, no bass, no piano, no vocals. It has none of the instrumentation required for rock. The composition sounds a bit like psychedelic rock, but not enough, it sounds more like something you'd hear in a Castlevania game.
But, it is pretty good, so props.

User avatar #113175 to #113170 - thebestpieever (05/17/2014) [-]
Rock has acoustic guitas and electric guitars. It ocassionally uses guitar synths, in the way that you plug a guitar and then synth the sound from it. Synthrock uses synths, but it'll still have a real bass and drums somewhere around, and more often than not a guitar.
User avatar #113183 to #113175 - misticalz ONLINE (05/17/2014) [-]

The Beatles- Because Black Sabbath - Sabbra Cadabra Black Sabbath - Sabbra Cadabra I even threw in a metal song with synths. As you see, in all these tracks the synths are prominent, but they're ornamentation on top of a traditionally composed rock (or early metal) song. Unlike in your track, where everything is pretty much synths (and the bass apparently, but yeah, it was pretty buried in the mix).

rateyourmusic.com/release/album/silver_apples/silver_apples/ ok that makes sense

But I've never once heard the term Synth Rock, considering how deep I can get into genres and seeing many genre terms thrown around on various sites a lot. I think I would have heard of this genre "synthrock". But I've never heard of it before. Can you explain that?

I think what synthrock to you is what Electronic just is. Like Electronic music it self.
User avatar #113204 to #113203 - thebestpieever (05/17/2014) [-]
So you in 12 years have never heard a word, offspringed by a genre you don't listen to much, therefore it mustn't be a real word.
User avatar #113205 to #113204 - shibe ONLINE (05/17/2014) [-]
Considering a quick google search, you barely see the term thrown around. I doubt in any way it's popular. Rateyourmusic doesn't accept a genre until a lot of people notice it as one. Like they recently added vaporwave because it had sustained itself for a good amount of time and a lot of people considered it a genre. So if that's the reason synthrock isn't in the database then don't lie to me and say everyone knows about the genre.

I listened to that beatles song. It's fucking psychedelic pop. Not "synthrock", come on pie.
User avatar #113206 to #113205 - thebestpieever (05/17/2014) [-]

Jesus fuckign christ pie. You say I go way to deep into genres yet you say synthrock is a genre. Rock music characterized by synths... hmm... What would that even sound like? Like give me the epitome of synthrock. I bet you I can tell the actual genre of the song.

*Sigh* Shibe, let me give you a dissertation that I'm almost sure wont work. Music genres aren't set in stone. The best there is are certain characteristics that most songs identified as that genre share. Breaking of the molds are allowed, and the exact degree to which that is subjective. Synthrock is a genre assigned often to songs birthed by bands of the Psychedelic inclination. It lived around 10 years, then it went on to evolve into electronic music at large. But unlike Metal synthrock is heavily dependant on an already build track with it's foundation of one of the genres. Therefore there isn't a track that's exclusively synthrock, and there definitely isn't an album because synthrock was born out of florishes, synthrock is an embryo, and most tracks that are synthrock, yes, can very well be filed as members of other genres (often rock, blues rock, psychedelic rock and progressive rock). But of course this doesn't sit well in a list making format, that doesn't mean it wasn't an existing movement that existed.
User avatar #113210 to #113208 - shibe ONLINE (05/17/2014) [-]
Finally something that can actually convince me of something from you. Thank you.

I was thinking that, but I felt if I had commented that you would have said "synthrock is only synths no geetar >: (" and i wouldn't know what then

Well, while I still will probably never hear of the genre again. Thanks for the information. I learned something.

User avatar #113099 to #113096 - shibe ONLINE (05/16/2014) [-]
Nirvana isn't really overrated, sure many consider them amazing and one of the best. But they had like two really popular and critically acclaimed albums. I know they have another one but it didn't get as much notice as In utero and nevermind did.

Pink Floyd however has like 4-5 albums that almost everyone says "OH GOD GREATEST THING IN MUSIC 10/10101010/1-0/01/0101".

Both are overrated for sure. And I dislike both. Not saying I don't respect them both, like I respect Pink Floyd and Nirvana, but I can't seem to get their music to click with me.

I still don't even know what post-rock is characterized by. I'm just gonna guess some songs, usually instrumental, that is more influenced from western classical music and ambient than rather just straight out rock. I don't fucking know.

Slint - Breadcrumb Trail
Talk Talk - AFTER THE FLOOD - 1991
Bark Psychosis - Absent Friend

these are all usually consider post-rock and i like them.

If you like godspeeds more ambient stuff though, check out sigur ros.

Whatever it was. I don't care anymore. We just have different opinions on music.

i still don't like that, something about that cheesy 80s metal, whatever genre it is, i don't like it, way too cheese for me, it just seems to be stereotyped with nerds and losers, i'd rather stick my underground avant-garde pop music of the 80s that is usually stereotyped with goths and hipsters, that appeals more to me.

i must admit, the aesthetic of music is pretty important to me, because it really determines how I will think of the sound

My vision of metal is some muscular Scandinavian dudes going to hell and kickin shit and fuckign everything up and coming out of hell like a fuckin boss and just kaboom and shit, I don't like, I'm gonna be a huge fag and say that's way too 'manly' for me. I don't like overly manly things. I like overly girly things, that's easy to get with, but overly manly things is just too much for me.

I've been delving into post-punk recently so I pretty much have the essentials. I really don't have a preference over depressing or upbeat post-punk so just give me anything you think is worthwhile that isn't really "essential" if you have any.

My favorites however, have been:
Q: Are We Not Men?
VS.
Disintegration
Closer
Psychocandy
Deceit

Grauzone - Eisbär Grauzone is this swizz post-punk band that sings in German, a lot good synthy experimentation in there as well, their s/t is pretty good

Essential Logic - Alkaline loaf (in the area) This may already be essential, but idc, it's so good, very underrated and if you like the more punkier side of post-punk you'll like this

Fad Gadget - The Box Fad Gadget is a bit more of a synthy post-punk band, but still their album Fireside Favorites is one of my favorites , also check out gag by them

www.youtube.com/watch?v=xLDHr5r0iIY You may have heard this, but if you like the experimental goodies of This Heat, will prepare youself for this. I don't even get it, so ya I don't really like it. But I've heard people that like This Heat usually like this as well.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=zMSxsRBqsL8 It's worth checking out the No Wave side of Post-Punk, it's a lot more experimental and noisy, but there are some really good shit in the genre.

If you were to make a rateyourmusic and rate every album you listen to, I could follow what you listen to and recommend you albums from that.

rateyourmusic.com/genre/Post-Punk/ I use this A LOT to find more post-punk, it's a great tool.

good luck

The first two links sounds like what I'm looking for. Fad Gadget has a little too much synth for me, but I can bare it. I already got the last two also.

If you want to take it easy. Right when you listen to an album, go and review it. It's fairly simple. Just click stars to represent how much you like it.

I guess it shouldn't be too hard in second thought. But i'd be hard to update on albums cause I usually don't decide whether I like an album or not until the third or fourth listen.

it's not hard just go back to the page and click the stars again and woah updated

Something about it just didn't seem to click for me.

I didn't like it at all.

I didn't like The Seer and I haven't checked out their new album. I can't listen to an album longer than an hour and fifteen minutes. My A.D.D, even on medicine, kicks in and I just ignore it and get bored.
User avatar #113220 to #113219 - obedientflyer (05/17/2014) [-]
Oh yeah I forgot about your A.D.D, the length thing is understandable

I don't like The Seer much either but To Be Kind is good, although not as good as most /mu/ claims it to be. It's pretty long also so I don't know if it would appeal to you anyways To Be Kind however, is pretty energetic which might keep you attentive.

I like Ab-Soul better
because he reps the short niggas
User avatar #112949 to #112948 - gandaalf (05/16/2014) [-]
mmm
i've been trying to make myself like ab-soul because he seems cool
but i have both long term mentality and control system but i only like a couple of songs
schoolboy q is fucking good , almost as good as kendrick though
User avatar #112952 to #112949 - derpityhurr (05/16/2014) [-]
Longterm Mentality is his best stuff so far, its a bit intelligent so i like it
Control System is a bit heavy so Ive only listened to it once through
Longterm 2 is pretty good but it really feels like a mixtape rather than an album, has like 5 crappy songs in the middle of it
Schoolboy's Setbacks and Habits and Contradictions are fucken great but I really dont like oxymoron
TDE taking over SZA pretty shite tho
User avatar #112953 to #112952 - gandaalf (05/16/2014) [-]
i really like the song that was SZA and kendrick
habits and contradiction was the best album by Q , i didn't like oxymoron at first but i guess it's about the mood i'm in.
longterm mentality is some pretty smart shit and i get the message and all but it's kind of boring to listen to in my opinion
User avatar #112954 to #112953 - derpityhurr (05/16/2014) [-]
I think i was expecting hip hop when i listened to SZA so i guess im a bit biased
I like Setbacks just a bit better cause of how laidback it is but theyre both great
Im looking forward to his next album, should be out soon since he threatened Top Dawg that he would leak it
