User avatar #120736 to #120706 - volgzangief (07/06/2014) [-]
Music without emotion may as well be a tin can falling down some stairs.
User avatar #120738 to #120736 - thebestpieever (07/06/2014) [-]
I don't think so. I've never understood this pressure for musicians to be "true" either in the way they play, or what they write or the "sell-out" thing. How is it we can respect and understand that an Actor doesn't actually feel anything he says or does? How is it writers can write about whatever the fuck they want -very often by comission- and still have something good come out of it? Yet musicians aren't allowed, no, musicians always have to write what they know, and just for the passion, otherwise they're phony sellouts.
User avatar #120739 to #120738 - volgzangief (07/06/2014) [-]
The only time I think that musicians are "phony sellouts" is when they give creative control over their work to a recording company - not if they make a song about topics they aren't completely knowledgeable about.

Theres is a difference in someone who plays music from their heart, rather than just for money, or fame. I don't know if its just me , but I've always found that musicians who are more in touch with their songs instead of reputation, or money, play better sounding music.

User avatar #120740 to #120739 - thebestpieever (07/06/2014) [-]
I disagree. Because you cannot tell who is doing it out of their heart. You want to believe people who do it out of their heart do it better, so you see that. But you've got no way to tell if the dude goes backstage after an amazing show, throws his instrument on the floor, opens up a bottle of rum and thanks god that the show is over. You could say "you can tell" but no, you can't tell, because lying and pretending aren't hard things to do.

Classical players are trained to have "no emotion" in their playing
User avatar #120729 to #120727 - darksideofthebeast (07/06/2014) [-]
I'm not talking about classical players. I'm talking about terrible drum covers or terrible guitar covers.
#120731 to #120729 - Absolute Madman (07/06/2014) [-]
What I mean with classical is not acoustic or even trained to play orchestal music which often gets called cassical. Players with a classical mussical education are taught poses and expressions they ought to mantain during a piece, because theyre meant to be professionals. Not saying thats good but its how theyre taught
User avatar #120732 to #120731 - darksideofthebeast (07/06/2014) [-]
I know that. I'm talking about a simple drum cover, like on an Iron Maiden song for example.

Need guitar help.

How do I learn scales ? Where do I start? Which one do I start with ?

I want to learn scales first, is that a problem? I'll learn chords later, but considering I want to...... I don't know scales just sound more fun instead of strummin
User avatar #120716 to #120693 - kaisakuenkou (07/05/2014) [-]

User avatar #120714 to #120693 - darksideofthebeast (07/05/2014) [-]
Scales are good to learn first, but chord shifting is key for good guitar playing along with good scale work.
And what Bestpie said, those are great starting scales...
User avatar #120699 to #120693 - thebestpieever (07/05/2014) [-]
By doing them over and over again. By looking them up. The pentatonic, the major and the minor scale.

You should learn both, it's like asking if you should learn to play piano well with your right hand or your left hand, they are both important skills. Preferably, however, you should learn chords first, so that you understand how rhythm work is done and you can adapt well to soloing or doing lead work over it.
User avatar #120707 to #120699 - confusedasian (07/05/2014) [-]
I am learning them both. I just want to learn one before the other and not at the same time. I'm new and don't want to become overwhelme.

I've listened to To Be Kind two times, still haven't really liked it.

This is some really neat experimental post-punk, sure it isn't Lemon Kittens or Biting Tongues but it's a nice sound that sounds like it would fit being released in 79'.

And I haven't listened to a lot this year, mainly because I tend to avoid albums people are saying are bad. I'll only check them out if they're in a genre I like or they are by a artist I like.

I enjoy music for how it sounds.

People who try and be complex for complexities sake are absolute ballroots in my opinion. Just because a song is complexly written, doesn't instantly make it good. I will admit there is some correlation there, but a lot of prog-metal bands (from my experience) think complex instantly makes it good. I will also admit obscure time signatures CAN be good, but they don't instantly make a song good.

Another admission, a lot of tech-death (another of my favourite genres) has the exact same problem, but to a much lesser extent, and I'm just as strict as them.

Guys, I'm pretty upset because the music I like don't have lyrics or very few.

I like to daydream and draw and I find it very hard to feel like I'm in another place if there are lyrics.

So if you have any link to some songs that would make you feel like you are in another place or something. This is why I usually like video game music, but any genre without (or few) lyrics can work too such as classical or rock. (I usually don't like remixed version of vgm though.. usually. Also no trance because I feel fucking lost with that kind of music).
