I wonder if Thom Yorke is buttmad at Matt Bellamy purely because Bellamy started singing with that amateurish falsetto that Yorke uses 5 years later and by 2007 he'd developed a full voice while Yorke still uses his thin falsetto on KoL. Or maybe it's because Muse's drummer totally ripped their stuff for their first album.

Was surprisingly mellow for the genre, which was refreshing
Didn't feel like the singer had much emotion
Didn't like how constantly dark and light the tambre was - there was never enough real grit in the sound for my taste
I liked how the songs progressed
Overall 7/10

wow wtf i didnt expect to have to write so much. I can't express my opinions for shit (even on my favourite albums and genres, let alone a genre i dont listen to frequently). Plus I won't have time to write intricate reviews next week (or any week there after, unless it's on a weekend). So i'm going to keep mine small, like my parents expectations for me, and I'll be the guy who gives terrible reviews that make no sense xd.

I liked it. It wasn't as edgy as I thought it was going to be and I got some pretentious vibes from it, which is right up my alley. I've never listened to a Ghost album/song before, and I don't listen to much metal anyway, but it was certainly better than I thought it was going to be. I expected harsher vocals for some reason, and was pleasantly surprised when they were softer. Plus, the instruments kinda sounded a bit prog-gy, which is my favorite metal genre (bar post-metal). Overall I'd give it a 6.5/10

OK sorry for being late to the tread.
So I don't have much I could add that hasn't bean said just about every aspect of the album came together and blended great and all the songs seamed to flow together perfectly. my favorite song id probable "From The Pinnacle To The Pit" cause that opening bass line gave me a boner overall the highlight where on the instrumentals and the vocals. I couldn't get into the lyrics mainly cause i'm not into most metal style lyrics Overall I'd say strong 8 to mid 9 really enjoyed it.

I used a "levels" function with PSP, finding a point where the scanning imperfections were covered by a black background and then the rest was a simple adjust of bright/contrast. I cropped the photography and pasted/centered it on a clear background keeping the proportions.

Before everything I'd like to say that besides that I heard of Ghost before I basically have no memory of their first works so it's almost like if this was my first experience with the band and therefore I consider my opinion a bit weak at this moment but here it goes anyway. And please, "please" I ask for a little bit of mercy if the grammar goes too messed up T^T

Now as everyone here I agree that the production was fantastic, all instruments vocals and melodies combine so well creating very pleasant music. Even the album art combines well with the songs, the band was really dedicated when it came to make the visual artwork fit with the music production in a whole.
In general the sound of the album, I wouldn't exactly call this metal music, it doesn't really feel like metal music. The songs pretty much sound like hard rock chants but it's something that goes well with Ghost image, a metal band that isn't really a fully metal band but something more experimental that seeks to catch up the attention of their listeners with their peculiar image and music style.
What I liked the most was the good use of keyboards. I'd say it's the most protagonic instrument in all the songs giving a great atmosphere.

In general, and without being a big fan of Ghost but being able to enjoy from time to time, this album deserves an 8/10 for be this well produced.
Strong points: He Is, Majesty, and Absolution.

Now I know this is short, but I don't feel myself well prepared for give a more solid and elaborated opinion. Also most has been said already and it seems that we are all going to one point in common.

guess ill do a mini review of the album once again seeing as i rec'd it

I become aware of this album due to the single that came out a month or two before the release "Cirice", From the start of the album the synth makes a sinister tone with that leading into the first song and they kept changing the mood with each song which i found refreshing, From my first listen i was quite blown away by the production on this thing, From there last two albums the production has been quite lacking or blurred they have out done themselves and I say this might be their best album out /yet/, Guitars were great, bass was rad, drums were perfect the snare was not stupidly up in the mix, thats one thing i cant stand is a ear piercing snare Vocals to me were great too especially on the track "He is" Which is my favorite song on the album.

To sum it up to anyone that was not in the week 1 album thing, This album is worth a listen just from the production quality and the enjoyable and approachable songs.

Very good album tad biast as i rec'd it but never less 8/10

I don't really have any history with this band or bands very similar to them. The closest thing I've heard is Absolution by Muse.

The album doesn't come off as particularly dark. I was expecting a little more with the impression I got from the cover art. Not having listened to anything else in Ghost's discography, I can't weigh it against anything else by them. On its own, Meliora is a pretty decent album. Being the first metal album I've had a reason to listen through from start to finish (apart from a few mostly instrumental sludge albums), it wasn't nearly as off-putting as I thought it might be. That said, I couldn't see it being something I'd seek out on my own or listen to often. I wouldn't mind hearing it again if someone else played it while I was around.

The lyrics are one thing I can't get into at all. That just comes with this style of music, so I expected it, at least. "He Is" comes across like a hit worthy Christian rock track if a few words were changed, so I got a few giggles at the expense of Ghost there. With lyrics in general, I tune out a lot of the words and listen for sound. I have to give a lot of the credit to the vocalist, along with the lyrics, vocals are my most immediate turnoff when it comes to metal. Clean or distorted or whatever, I've never been a fan at all. Papa's vocals have a very agreeable quality. I could see him singing straight pop or any lighter toned, vocal driven genre with no trouble. He might not be the most interesting or memorable vocalist, but I could see him pulling it off without much difficulty.

As far as production, Meliora is great. Everything comes through very clear and well balanced. It's is a very sonically pleasant album and I can see why a lot of people would like it. The choir, organ and song intros/interludes, whatever you want to call them, all add more interest than the rest of the album for me, and I'm glad they're there. Spöksonat was the one that I really liked. It brought to mind some of the more acoustic sounding parts of Rossz Csillag Alatt Született by Venetian Snares. I just love that spooky harp sound. I wish more of the album followed in that vein. Other than that, the choir is what stands out the most in my opinion. It doesn't clash with the rest of the album how I think it would in a lot of other cases, where it would come off as super cheesy. They definitely pulled that off well.

I don't want imply it's a throwaway album when I say I wouldn't come back to it. This kind of music doesn't have enough of what I'm looking for is all. Even though it's not my flavor of choice, I'd absolutely recommend that people check it out. I can't deny that it's an enjoyable listen.

Yeah, OK, I wasn't the only one that caught bits of Muse's Absolution here and there. I knew I wasn't fucking crazy. I didn't even want to bring it up because where it was most similar was in the chorus of the track Absolution, so I just thought I was being dumb.

Well, I think they're going for the same grandiose tone. Ghost doesn't want to be Sabbath, they don't want be that dark, but they want to be huge, anthemic and they want to be catchy. And they write pop for a metal Audience. Muse is huge, vaguely anthemic and catchy and they write Metal -and other stuff- for pop audiences. So it makes sense that they'd arrive at more or less the same place, only Ghost is spooky.

Debuting with the backstory of their band, then their sophomore release revealed their malicious intent, and now, Ghost has taken over. I really liked it, It has all the amazing satanic worshipping/god belittling lyrics from their first album while they successfully added a few more monster mash members to their lyrical repertoire. Could have used a little more latin, though. Refining everything from their riffing to Papa Emeritus' haunting vocals, they also fixed a few mistakes from their second album, such as the meandering wank and overproduction. Although they only solved this by returning to their roots. Super tight, and super spooky. They still haven't quite figured out how to keep a song focus for an elongated time or expand their instrumentation, but that's not Ghost's thing, and that's totally fine since they have absolutely mastered the traditional verse/chorus song writing as far as i'm concerned. The synths and their incorporation of choir are much more tasteful from the last release and compliment the songs well, instead of what the songs depended on, as was the case on Infestissumam. The riffs admittedly do tire at times and I'm not 100% in love with the interludes, but none of that is detrimental by any means, they just missed the mark a bit. Overall, the most prevalent difference from their older material is their developing dynamics. I really love the different incorporation of timber, especially on the guitar and the sinister synths. Can't wait for what's next

Alright then.
Well, Ghost's Meliora then:
I want to preface all I have to say by stagint that, musically, it's a very enjoyable album. It's a good mix of poppy hard rock and metal riffs, with good keyword and good vocals. The production is also fantastic, all involving and with a fantastic sense of depth -which is weird seeing as how their first album lacked all of that, so it's a pretty big step. And whatever stiff iceman they got to play guitar for them continues his thawing out on this record, now capable of grooving instead of just stiff square and crotchet riffs. Overall, it's a very enjoyable album and a big step up for the band.

Which makes it all the worse that the album itself, and even the songs, are way lesser than the sum of their parts. Ghost have always been very keen on projecting a dark, macabre aura. Even if not in an intimidating way, in a Haunted House "a good scare is nice every now and then" kind of way. Hence the costumes, and the little atmospheric intros opening their albums, and even the spooky grandiose latin names for some of their tracks - "Absent God" sounds pretty badass, don't get me wrong. Which makes for a pretty jarring shift whenever a song is done with the spooky or beefy intro du jour and reveals itself for the groovy, danceable, and occassionally beefy Hard Rock track it really is. There's a lot of set up being misused here, even in the tracks themselves.

The problem is alleviated by a very constant fantastic key accompaniment that manages to sustain the religious, solemn and slightly dark atmosphere on life support during a lot of moments where it might otherwise break. But an accompaniment cannot carry an entire atmosphere by itself when the lead instrumentation actively works agaisnt it, which makes it jarring when a bright, cheerful, near triumphant chorus comes screaming in delivered by Papa's agreeable mellow vocals. This man may be a great singer who can carry a tune by his way alone, but capable of sustaining a dark atmosphere he is not- most of the time.

So half of the album is gear changing away from the dark atmosphere the group actively works to build during the other half. Which is not a bad thing, both halves are agreeable Hard Rock. But they are absolutely dwarfed by the small moments when the band locks in to a single target and mood and delivers it in a hyperconcentrated form. It's not as dark as they get to be in certain spots, but it is much more concise and complete. Locking in for a Scooby Doo levels of spookyness but Black Sabbath levels of composing they deliver in full in the chorus of "From the Pinnacle to the Pit" and the verses to "Absent God" where you truly feel in presence of something much bigger than yourself, and much bigger than a five piece rockband. They're rare, but they exist. In a somehow more dilluted fashion the atmosphere remains nigh unbroken in Absolution. For the most part it's "Sabbath Instrumental Piece" level spooky in places like Spoksonat and the intro to "He Is".

The lyrics are negligible. For the most part they're standard pop rock fare changed to have a somehow dark spin that praises dark forces, but the phrasing and rhyming is much in line with top 40 radio, not far from what bands like Bon Jovi would deliver after watching a week of horror movies. Particularly He Is which is just love song, but about Hades. If The Paper Chase are derranged psycopaths as musicians, and the Kreeps are witnesses in horror to a dark world, then Ghost are the Kids from Disgaea 3 where bad things are considered good but everyone acts and speaks like a PG-13 cartoon.

It's a strong work of musicianship, and very rarely stumbles. But it sparsely reaches a goall it works strongly to achieve, making a lot of it feel a bit wasted. Being lesser than the sum of its parts is hardly an insult, however, when the parts are this high quality. Lots of potential, much more exploited than in their last two albums, but a lot of it is still wasted.

My review of Meloria by Ghost

Honestly, for some reason I was expected this to be some distorted chugging death metal group from the artwork. I was surprised and pleased that it wasn't, because I think the vocals may be the best thing about this album. The singer isn't that unique, but I think he fits in well with what the music behind him is trying to do. He gives me kind of a less crazy Daron from SOAD feel, and I love SOAD so that's good. The music itself I'm not too into personally. I do like heavy music, metal music, etc. etc. but I usually like to it be faster because I find that more exciting to listen to in the genre. Whereas this has like a Black Sabbath, Megadeth (I dunno if that's a good example, as I've barely listened to any Megadeth) feel to it; that slow tempo chugging for a lot of the songs. I just don't find it that appealing. I think hayden mentioned the production being really good on this album and that I definitely agree with. The sounds are very solid, and I actually really like some of the key work, particularly on the last track. And that organ bit at the end of that one song was pretty nice too. While I don't care for the style of music that much, I can say that this is a well produced album fitting into the style pretty perfectly.

I'll give it a 6/10. A not terrible album, but not something I'd seek out normally or really listen to again under normal circumstances.

Best track: Deus In Absentia

Megadeth are pretty fast most of the time. I can see the SOAD comparison, though. I thought of a tamer Scott Wiland.

I could be wrong, but I may have only heard like one Megadeth song in my entire life and I guess it wasn't that fast which is why I made the initial connection and then rescinded my statement pretty much

Also, I know you love Megadeth, and I just didn't want to hurt you, bb

Megadeth - Reckoning Day (With Lyrics) Megadeth - Head Crusher Megadeth - Tornado Of Souls (Lyrics) Yeah, probably Peace Sells that has a steady mid-paced military tone to it or Symphony of Destruction... which might be their slowest song apart from a little bass solo jam they did. Most of the time they retain a brisk pace.

I think it was probably Peace Sells. I know they were part of the 80s thrash movement so that's why I assumed I was probably wrong in thinking most of their songs were slower.

and my review i have saved up on a text file

Not good at reviewing, and since this will be my first time at this expect to see somethings that turn your head.

Spirit - I like the steady pace it has going for it, along with the nice melodies and the "harmonized" vocals, just I feel like it doesn't really go anywhere like I kinda wanted it to - 6.4

From The Pinnacle To This Pit - If I were to think of a song that's hard rock, I'd think of something like this. Not that that's a terrible thing, it's just not that much of a good thing either. - 5.9

Cirice - I'm wanting to see people accidentally post circle instead of cirice like I first did, besides that, heavy riffs and pounding drums, sorta what I expected heading into this - 5.4

Spoksonat - ok - 5/10

He Is - This album is much more pop sounding then I was expecting, again not a terrible thing, just was expecting something more raw. But this song is just a boring ballad. - 5.0

Mummy Dust - Much more sinistar sounding than the other songs so far, I like that a lot, like finally some change in sound. Still nothing to glorify though. - 5.9

Majesty - I take back what I said about 'To This Pit', this is what I think Hard Rock is. - 5.3

Devil Church - Alright Instrumental - 5.5

Absolution - Man, I had to listen to this twice just to get something because of how bad it catches the listener, and I still didn't get anything - 4.4

Deus In Absentia - I think this was trying to be so much more than it is, and honestly I was wanting it to be so much more than it is - 5.6

Overall - I was sorta disappointed and I had no hopes going in. Most of the songs were ok in a way but never did anything, and the entire album is too same-y - 5.4

>Haven't listened to one of your favourite bands in a while
>Start thinking "well, maybe I don't like 'em as much any more"
>Put in one of their songs 'cause you've got the fuck abouts
>End up listening to entire album because they're just that fucking good.

You're using the "their" instead of "there" and "your" instead of "you're" on purpose, aren't you?
