#17: Anthony Raneri - Sorry State Of Mind

Anthony Raneri is the lead singer of one of my favorite bands of all time, Bayside. This year has been my first with really checking out his solo work, just in time for me seeing him perform solo, and the release of his newest EP, Sorry State Of Mind. As Anthony himself has stated in various interviews, his solo work is a chance to dabble with different genres of music that he doesn't really feel like he can do when writing with and for Bayside. You can definitely tell that's the case on Sorry State Of Mind. The intro track is a brief, one minute song that sounds kind of like the Bayside song Moceanu, and it's a great way to set things off. After that we get Gone, which is a very interesting song because like he stated, fans would freak if there was a Bayside song like this (and some did anyway), because it has an electro type beat in the chorus, and part of the chorus uses autotune. Gasp! But really though, he kind of just uses it to experiment with (he obviously doesn't need it), just to get a different sound to come out. I'll admit I was kind of confused when I first heard the song too, but it's definitely grown on me, even the autotuned parts. Then there's No Good, which is a piano ballad, another backdrop I've never heard his voice over. Then Sorry State Of Mind (the title track) which is sort of like an old school country song, followed by the soft, kind of general rock song, I Never Want To Fix Myself Again. Then things are closed out with the beautiful and honest, Run and Stumble, a singer-song writer folky track that could probably be the one soft, acoustic tune on a Bayside album. Basically, variation is plentiful within these short, six tracks, and I think that's pretty impressive. Not to mention, they are all quite catchy, something Anthony always has a knack for, and why he's one of my favorite song-writers.

I can't lie, I pretty much love everything Anthony Raneri touches, so this EP (and the first one from 2012) is a great way to hear what he can come up with outside of Bayside.

Best track: Run and Stumble

Thom Yorke & Robert Del Naja - The UK Gold

Two of my favorite britshit musicians worked together a couple years ago to provide the soundtrack to a documentary about corporate tax dodging in the UK. With such big names behind the soundtrack you'd think it would be talked about, but apparently not. For about 2 years there was absolutely no news on the soundtrack getting its own release, or a leak of any kind. It just kind of vanished until Thom and Robert posted the complete soundtrack to soundcloud.
The music itself ranges from simple (very simple) beats to reworks of finished tracks from Massive Attack and Thom Yorke solo releases. The two of them didn't work directly with eachother, which I think is unfortunate, but the tracks they put out are still enough to catch my ear. Thom contributes his cold, repetitive electronic beats and Robert provides more organic sounding vignettes. Johnny Greenwood and some Massive Attack collaborators also stepped in to help out on most of the tracks.

Favorite track: Mission Creep (by Robert Del Naja)

Because the shit it samples from was already written well enough to be popular, now you have a loop of the catchy parts distorted and you don't have any conclusion. Like when you have a song stuck in your head, it only gets stuck because you are remembering that piece, not all the way to the end. If the song had an end in your head, it wouldn't be stuck very long.

Love it. Hookless, but then again, heavy megadeth has been hookless and hooky megadeth has been heaviless for like 15 years now. The vocals are way better than FI, and that lead guitar is awesome. Could stand to lose 30 seconds of length, though. And that 1-2-3 of power chords is used one too many times for my taste, but whatever. The main riff if scorching as fuck, and the verse riff is a fantastic pummeling a-la good death. Deth has been consistently shit at picking their singles since Countdown, so if the single is this good I'm expecting the album to blow my mind. And if it doesn't: Mediocre Deth is still better than most things out there.

Also: On the music video, it's not racist or islamophobic like I expected which is good. If Mustaine really is the horrible human being everyone suspects him to be then he does a good job keeping that out of his music. And that's, like, requisite two of a good song: do not advocate murder, racism, genocide, torture, or dehumanisation of any kind.

He's the biggest jerk on the planet, that's a given, and he's also crazy. That much is a proven, corroborated, stone cold fact. He may or may not be racist, and sexist, but there's no proof really, only a couple of little strange comments here and there.

Top Albums of 2015

#18: Open Mike Eagle - A Special Episode Of

This is one of two EPs on this list and I have to say, for this one, if it was a full length album it certainly would be ranked higher. A Special Episode Of to me is basically a continuation and a reflection of Open Mike Eagle's album from last year, Dark Comedy. That was probably top 5 for me last year, and every song on this EP sounds like it could fit in with that album. The production (catchy and electronic sounding), the lyrics (examining our internet age society through a critical yet humorous lens), and Mike's voice and flow (traditional yet very unique at the same time) all are akin to what Dark Comedy gave us last year. Also, APEO contains one of my favorite rap tracks of 2015: Dark Comedy Late Show. Basically a sequel / mini remix to Dark Comedy Morning Show, the opening track of Dark Comedy. The beat takes some of the sounds from the old beat to create something familiar, yet still totally it's own thing. Mike's societal criticism is sharp, yet catchy and memorable because of his use of, well, dark comedy! Lines like "Our Congress moves just like a cult could / Invade Iraq 15 times in my adulthood / And we quit asking for the reasons / And clicked the Constitution's terms of service agreements" as well as "And I can see the Super Bowls of the future: / The Ferguson blacks vs. Missouri State Troopers / The privacy rights vs. the personal computers/ Concussion researchers vs. university boosters" are thoughtful and deep, but they still keep this sort of light air about them because of Mike's clever use of wordplay and metaphor.

Needless to say, I'm definitely looking forward to Open Mike Eagle's next full length solo project.

And So I Watch You From Afar - Heirs

What could anyone have to be so happy about in Northern Ireland? It's something i may never know but this was by far my favorite summer album from this year. God it's so happy. ASIWYFA is a ridiculous string of letters and also a rock band out of Belfast. Heirs is a worthy follow up to their last album, All Hail Bright Futures. It's full of upbeat, guitar-driven songs with group vocals. There's also plenty of atmosphere worked in that doesn't slow the album down at all. They also tend to dip into a bit of math rock here and there. ASIWYFA is always a great diversion from all the downtempo/ambient/serious sounding stuff I listen to.

It's a pretty good album, though I prefer All Hail Bright Futures times a million. Heirs gets kinda boring after a bit for me. To me All Hail Bright Futures has a lot more diversity from track to track and with Heirs everything just sounds a tad too similar.

I agree, All Hail Bright Futures is by far my favorite. Taken individually there's nothing wrong with any of the songs on Heirs but it could stand to have more variation as a whole. It still gets me plenty jazzed up.

I don't think I've ever heard anyone use the word "akin" in real life. The difference between writing and speech is funny.

Why have I always thought Open Mike Eagle was white?

I've never heard anything from him other than his name. I guess it just struck me as a white rapper name.

This really sounds like this, like, old folk song I remember being sung by, like, really gruff men with bass voices and they were singing about, like hunting and drinking and shit. But I can't recall what exactly it was. I hate getting this feeling.
