Okay.
Why in the fuck did no one ever tell me Motorhead did prog?

Like, in anticipation for Bad Magic and seeing as how Lemmy might not be with us a lot longer I decided to flesh out my Motorhead catalogue by picking up 10 albums of them I never listened to (and I still don't own all of them). I sat down to listen to the earliest released I picked up and Oh. My God.

Seriously. This album kicks so much fucking ass it's unbelievably. And the interesting is that it barely sounds like Motorhead. Aside from the distinctive vocals and an opening bassline ripped straight off of the Ace of Spades book of tricks, this album is basically not Motorhead. It has the DNA, you can see how they come up with this being them, but on a first impression only the vocals are there.

I don't know who played on this, apparently they'd kicked Clarked off by now, but whoever it is the motherfucker can throw down on guitar. Bunch of neat little flourishes and in-and-out noodling here, and some just fantastic solos.

And Lemmy's basswork, oh man, he does it like in no other album of his. He fills it out, like always, the songs never sound like they're done by a three-piece, and he pulls out those little chords he sometimes plays on his bass very regularly on here. He does the job of two people -I guess three if you count singer- and he knocks it out of the bloody park. His tone is also much cleaner this time around, lets you hear both his stuff and the guitarist's stuff a lot better.

It's like, wow, the motherfucker goes for actual rythim section and chord progressions this time around. He's not playing the channel filling riff-rhythm guy this time around, a lot of this stuff just structurally sounds like it could come from some AoR band out there, but composionally it's got his name all over it. And he doesn't let this shit rest at all, he's more subdued than normal, sure, but "more subdued than lemmy" is still a heck of a lot of noise. So this is a less atmospheric prog than usual, because he keeps up a lot of pace even when the guitarist goes for his noodly noodles of noodling.

Man this fucking thing is so shittingly good Jesus motherfucking Christ. God, I think I'm in bloody love.

Except Tales of Glory. Fuck that track with it's one riff, and all the noodling on top of that riff that doesn't get any space to breathe or exist.

Aye, new Slayer is indeed alright.
I'm kinda grim on the band's prospects though... like, I know King can put out a kickass record by (mostly) himself as proven by Christ Illusion... but that was 10 years ago. Repentless was aight (listened to it four times today, first listen too) and WPB was aight too, so y'know, aight.
But if it's only aight then I don't think I'm interested in following the band any more. And I'm not too kin on letting Holt do the writing for Slayer. Not for any other reason than the fact that Exodus's last three albums have been fucking amazing whilst Slayer has been aight for a decade. I don't want top notch Exodus material get watered down on Slayer aightness, or to have Slayer aight albums delay the release of fucking monster cock destroying violent festivals that Exodus albums have become.

But I dunno, for the moment it's aight.

Idk the title track off the new album was really good i enjoyed that quite a bit but idk i felt like it was very good but idk its a miss for me. I feel they are kinda almost to calling it a day maybe 2 or 1 more album

Exodus are pretty great what i wonder is when Holt will return to them i'd rather Slayer get someone else so Holt can go back to make Exodus albums

Yeah, there's some pretty good stuff on the new album, but a lot of trash too. Feels a bit incomplete.

Yeah, he's been on a roll lately, for my money Exodus have pumped out three of the best Thrash albums of the millennium on a roll. The sooner he can get back to making more, the better.

I feel Slayer has toured so much and they played do fast on a lot of songs that they are and i hate to say this too old for what they play like its quite demanding especially for alot of there well known discography

Holt does Hannerman justice tho

I don't know that they're too old for this. A lot of Jazz musicians keep going way past their 60s and that's just as demanding as thrash is in technical terms. Plus, they're the same age as the Exodus guys and look at them. But I do feel they may be a little tired, mentally, like they're a little too focused on "Being Slayer" rather than just doing some heavy shit that sounds rad.

For the amount of touring they do and the whole "Being Slayer" stuff i would be too mentally worn out for it

Sure Jazz musicians are demanded to play to the same sort ot technical skill as the speed of thrash but they are not touring as much Im just assuming here they might do but yeah

Well, I don't know how much jazz musicians tour, really, but I imagine it can't be as gruesome as a thrash tour cycle, just by the nature of the show. So you may have a point there. Sort of reminds me of this line off of The Decline of Western Civilization that said "If you manage to survive a year of touring, it takes two years off of your life".

I don't care about the last part, TBH. There's probably no bigger album that Sgt. Peppers. And while it is more grandiose, I don't think it's as effective at that scale as Eroica is at its much more manageable level and paces itself moment to moment a lot better.

To be even more blunt, I'f place the fifth in front of the ninth as well.
