I decided to try my hand at making pixel art. I've looked at a few tutorials, and made a very rough chair. Yeah, it sucks, but I'd like some feedback on why it sucks. If I did anything right, that would be nice to know. I'm attaching a zoomed-out version and a zoomed-in version.

It looks a bit too flat
User avatar #57767 to #57764 - thedudeistheman (07/09/2014) [-]
Do you think adding better-defined borders would help?
User avatar #57770 to #57767 - fluttermon (07/09/2014) [-]
i just think you have to make it look a bit more like a cube so to say
User avatar #57772 to #57770 - thedudeistheman (07/09/2014) [-]
Okay, I'll work on that. Thanks for the advice.
#57762 to #57758 - alleksi (07/09/2014) [-]
For some reason it has a very weird paradoxical/optical illusion effect on me.

Even though the legs are clearly there to show that the chair is this way, my brain really wants to see it the other way.

User avatar #57763 to #57762 - thedudeistheman (07/09/2014) [-]
I see what you mean. I might go back and try to show different dimensions more with shading instead of focusing so much on the borders.
User avatar #57759 to #57758 - thedudeistheman (07/09/2014) [-]
Apparently, I did something wrong when rescaling and cropping, as some of the colors have changed. Any info on that would be nice as well.
User avatar #57765 to #57759 - fluttermon (07/09/2014) [-]
what program you using for it?
User avatar #57766 to #57765 - thedudeistheman (07/09/2014) [-]
I just used MS Paint. I figured that I should see if I liked doing it before learning to use a program designed for it.

I have RPG Maker VX Ace, which I think allows you to create pixel art, so I think I'll move to that soon.
User avatar #57774 to #57766 - maguswaffy (07/09/2014) [-]
GraphicsGale is a solid option if you wanna move from Paint. You're either gonna have to buy it or pirate it, though. pirating it is really easy
User avatar #57775 to #57774 - thedudeistheman (07/09/2014) [-]
There's actually a free version of GraphicsGale. It looks like I can't create gifs, but I'm a ways off from wanting to do that. Thanks for the recommendation though. I'll mess around with the program.
User avatar #57776 to #57775 - maguswaffy (07/09/2014) [-]
yeah, i forgot about that. i always assume that everyone who wants to make pixel art has thoughts on exporting them for games and stuff.
User avatar #57777 to #57776 - thedudeistheman (07/09/2014) [-]
I'm sure at some point I'd like to do that, but for now I'm just working on skills and whatnot.
User avatar #57769 to #57766 - fluttermon (07/09/2014) [-]
i used to do pixel art for 2 years some years back

used Paint too

but other programs are much better
photoshop is also good for it and have grid
User avatar #57771 to #57769 - thedudeistheman (07/09/2014) [-]
Paint has a grid, but it makes the colors look a little distorted when it's turned on, so it can be a little hard to get a good view of your work as your working. I mean, it takes five seconds to turn it on and off, but it can interrupt the flow of work.

requesting a drawing for a DnD character as my drawing skills suck. wondering if anyone could draw a male human roughly 6'2'' not that you could tell, with a wolf pelt cloak (with hood up) balaclava covering mouth ( if coloured. pale blue eyes with small pupils with average build)

'Hold Hands' is a move.

"The user and an ally hold hands. This makes them very happy."

It does nothing.

It's my favourite move now.

Quick question, I love drawing and painting, and sometimes I'm really inspired to draw/paint something but then I don't simply because I can't be bothered getting up and actually starting, does anyone else ever have this problem and how did you get over it?
User avatar #57736 to #57735 - legendaryhero (07/09/2014) [-]
I have this all the time.
When I start drawing I usually don't want to stop anymore, but the problem is getting started. The only way I get over it to grab my equipment.
User avatar #57741 to #57736 - NinjaSharkie (07/09/2014) [-]
I'm the same, once I'm started I can go for hours and not even realize the time passing but before actually starting I just can't be bothered getting up and setting all the paint up etc, I'm just too lazy haha

#57743 to #57731 - groulgarigon ONLINE (07/09/2014) [-]
Art block usually happens from being burnt out on artwork. It helps to have something completely opposite from art to do instead that you can continuously do to keep balanced. Art uses your brains and creativity for example, so instead of doing something that requires lots of brainwork, do something physical. It provides a break and also gets the blood flowing allowing more oxygen to reach the brain and allowing for higher brain function.

cheers the idea is my character is a shape shifter and he transforms into a wolf. and has been like this for 60 years (does not age like normal) but due to long life as a wolf when back in human form he has features of a wolf without being to conspicuous

This is what i got so far. I need you to answer two questions for me to continue.
1. Do you want a full body drawing or just the upper half of his body?
2. What type of clothes do you want him to wear? I will just make clothes i see fit if you don't want anything specific.
User avatar #57798 to #57785 - killermanz (07/10/2014) [-]
nah just head and shoulders and the wolf skin covers the entire body and only bit of clothing he has ( in the game when my character shapeshifts into a wolf the wolf pelt transforms into the skin of the wolf)
User avatar #57809 to #57798 - hsm (07/10/2014) [-]
oh, looks like we both had completely different ideas here. Well how about i cover the upper half of his body in mostly wolf pelt and the lower half of his body could be a really tattered and torn yet stable piece of cloth? I was going for a Pocahontas type jungle survival tribal look.
User avatar #57815 to #57809 - killermanz (07/10/2014) [-]
ah well it only really has to be the head and shoulders
User avatar #57817 to #57815 - hsm (07/10/2014) [-]
If that's the case then i'm almost done with the sketch. I'll ask you again if you're satisfied before coloring.
