Is there a specific name for this drawing style?

It's the gorillaz if anyone's wondering.

Yeah it's pretty similar.

Well, Jamie Hewlett ( the artist ) and every other artist has his own style of drawings no doubt but the gorillaz drawings sure don't have a specific name. It probably goes somewhere under "comic style / cartoon / cell shaded" .There are also a lot of artist drawing similar to this but it isn't labeled like "hard edge sharp dark style" or something.

Found some old drawings, just wanted to hear some opinions on them and if you could point out good/bad/terrible things on them. Thanks.

There's more of them, will post them later. Maybe.

I like the design you're going for, the whole face and neck thing is threatening, but you need to work on body proportions. Example, in this drawing you drew the arms slightly short which makes him look less threatening; namely the part of the arm between the shoulder and elbow need to be a bit longer. And on the other one his legs are kinda short, not enough to look bad but enough to make it look kinda awkward.
Here's a site for you to practice poses as well. The more you pracitce the more natural your figures would look. www.quickposes.com/pages/timed

Pics are most of what I've done so far, a pyrographed egg wittled from a rough pine branch I found, the weird lookin cat from a piece of board I found in my garage and the toy knife from some wood I was splitting a while back. Anybody else work with stuff like this?

This may be the wrong place to do this, it may even be borderline stupid to even try, but lately I've been wanting to do a graphic novel. Problem is, I can't draw for shit. So, on my hands and knees I come here to ask if anyone good at drawing really stylized stuff - I have this neon noir theme in my head - and if they are willing to company me in creating a graphic novel. "Why don't you ask a friend to help?" you may ask, one small problem, I have very little friends (like 1) and they can't draw either. So yeah, ain't I a stupid twat.
#58944 to #58939 - Nahyon (08/02/2014) [-]
So, what do you got so far ?
User avatar #58945 to #58944 - nutsfromahippie (08/02/2014) [-]
Do you mean story wise? I feel I have most of it worked out, I would like other opinions though on it. Oh well, here it goes: set in this alternative American city (doesn't really matter where it is) where vigilantes are now essentially the law. Think Kick Ass 2, where there is the wannabes (part timers who don't do much) and the real guys, the guys who actually do all the dirty work. The story follows a guy called Jack who pretty much hunts these vigilantes down because he's trying to find the identity and location of another vigilante who's gone dark, not to be seen for quite some time. Jack is a shell, just a psychopath who gives no fucks about anyone. He males deals with mobsters simply to get info, they hold it from him he tortures them, same with the vigilantes. Obvious inspirations would be Drive and Hotline Miami and other neo noir films, even old noir detective films. That's just the set up and shit, if you want me to say more then sure, I'd be happy to. Jack's a placeholder name, pretty cliche especially for a noir thing.
User avatar #58943 to #58939 - nutsfromahippie (08/02/2014) [-]
I understand that creating a graphic novel is no easy task, I know it's not something that is not done over night and that it's damn unrealistic to do for someone who has no experience. But lately I've reached a stage in my life where I just think "fuck it, go for it".
#58932 - xxxsonic fanxxx (08/02/2014) [-]
I promise I'll stop bothering you guys with this crap soon
But what do y'all think? I reckon I'm bordering on overdoing it a bit with the creases.
And due to lack of skill foresight I've managed to make the jacket the most detailed thing in the entire image; anime-ish-esque-like style or no, I'm not sure if it'll detract from the fact that Generic Anime-Ish-Esque-Like Female Character #91627 actually has a face.

I'd also like input on the scarf thing. It doesn't fold like the big boys and I'm not too certain on how to detail it properly. It's all new territory here, son

I don't know where else to go, so I'm asking somebody here. I need this made into a grid, each box being 277x325 pixels. I don't want just lines over where it should be, I want them to be clearly separated by at least a few pixels length. The end product should have 6 rows and 5 columns. I've tried and tried but I suck at this shit, so I hope one of you can do this. If any of you can do this, it'd be much appreciated.

More creases
Too many? Not enough? Bad placement? Bad attempt? pls tell
those faint ones across the chest are meant to imply breasts somewhere

I understand the creases in the shoulders, elbows, waist-area and, well, pretty much everywhere except halfway through the forearm. Generally, that area in a coat is pretty uncreased.
#58911 to #58909 - xxxsonic fanxxx (08/02/2014) [-]
Any other handy input?
I'm kinda flying blind here, all I've got aside from myself is this board and a couple of references that I'm trying really hard to refer to without copying.
User avatar #58912 to #58911 - lordnerevar (08/02/2014) [-]
If you want a bunched look, don't add clean creases. Add a ring or ripple crease to look like they've been bunched up someone's arm into a makeshift short sleeve. If you can't get it right, try putting on a jacket and doing it to your own arm. It's easy to look at your own forearm. The left side's crease looks way too high to be an elbow, it would look better with some symmetry with the right side. Your pocket linings are super straight, where they should be much more rounded to appear like they've got an arm in them instead of paper cutouts of arms. other than that... it looks pretty good. try adding the sewing seams to the shoulders maybe
#58915 to #58912 - xxxsonic fanxxx (08/02/2014) [-]
Well, I suppose there's nothing like a bit of actually bloody trying

Is this what you were talking about?
I think without shading, there's only so much depth you can get, but I'm always open to feedback
#58914 to #58912 - xxxsonic fanxxx (08/02/2014) [-]
I uh... don't really know how to do any of that properly
#58910 to #58909 - xxxsonic fanxxx (08/02/2014) [-]
That'd be cos it's a bit bunched, pushed up from the hands in pockets thing.
I am starting to think the left side is lacking in elbow creases though. I'll get right on that.

How do I light source
This is all new to me
#58924 to #58906 - xxxsonic fanxxx (08/02/2014) [-]
just think about it in terms of raised surfaces and stuff (like it'll be raised where their hand's in their pocket, therefore lighter depending where the light's coming from), I've never shaded clothing either, just think about it or look up some stock images of people wearing jackets. That's probably the best way to learn.
