Sup art board, I need some help/advice.
So I have this digital media class and we are working in illustrator, and our theme were fairy-tales so I made the Nutcracker.
1- Any helpful critiques?
2- For whatever reason I can not get the picture to get rid of everything in the white-space, help on getting it to crop down where it needs to be?

I have never used illustrator before, is it good for designing logos by chance? Like what is it's purpose?
User avatar #38041 to #38019 - AkatsukiNekoJr (10/01/2013) [-]
It is for logos especially because it is a vector, which means it is easier to shrink or enlarge without losing quality.

what version are you using? (the white space must be the artboard)
User avatar #37997 to #37996 - AkatsukiNekoJr (09/30/2013) [-]
CS6, I think it is however when I am working on the document a black border is where it should be cut off and that white space is not there.
User avatar #37998 to #37997 - azelot (09/30/2013) [-]
it'd be easier if you could send a screenshot ... about the picture, i think it'd be better/easier shading it with colors instead of gradients because it seems..dead (i cant find a word right now..sorry) also i dont know where the light is coming from, the things behind the nutcracker dont help with the composition, and be careful using textures, when you apply then a lot and so hard they saturate the picture ( try lowering some of them).
#37999 to #37998 - AkatsukiNekoJr (09/30/2013) [-]
Here is the screenshot.

I plan on working with the background more, that's my rough-draft since I had no clue what to do for it. As for the lighting, I see how how it is messed up, I am not use to illustrator yet so I think I was more concerned on giving it depth then I was with where the lighting was coming from. So you think using flat colors as opposed to gradients would look better?
User avatar #38000 to #37999 - azelot (09/30/2013) [-]
da fuq man yo tried giving it depth without thinking on where the light would come from? hahaha >> depth is created from light << . about the artboard, that white thing behind the drawing, you made it right? because the artboart is the black border inside , you either resize the whole picture or change the size of the artboard, and when saving/exporting jpg check the Use Artboard box.

simple (linear and round) Gradients are innefective when shading complex shapes, a gradient mesh will work 1000 times better but its really hard to handle. so yes if you're not a pro with light/shades/shapes/gradient mesh work with colors, it' will make it look more cartoonish and i think would fit the fairytale environment of the drawing (if thats what youre trying to create.. if its something dark, use the gradients). the user DEATHFOSWIFTWINGS has a sweet style with flat colors, give it a look to his work

Thanks for the help, I just pretend to know what I am doing. I did kind of want a flat look, I dunno. As for the depth and light source, I was just thinking oh that looks cool while working with one specific section. I don't usually but Illustrator is one tricky bitch.

Hey, I'm thinking of trying out some animating again for some time, but I have the same problem I always have: lack of ideas.
so if you could, please recommend me some kind of a movement, an action, that I could animate. no subtle movements or expressions. whole body movements/objects moving. it can be super wacky and strange, if you so want to, or it can be super simple like a jump. Just a reminder, I'm not really good at drawing, the point of this is to capture the motion, not the details of the character itself
I'll post some animation gifs if you want, don't have all that many of them though

Sorry for horrible picture quality. Again. My camera sucks and I can't exactly afford a scanner or something.

Anyways, just a thing I drew randomly for no reason. I have one more I'll post after this one, too. Nothing I can say about this, really. It wasn't really drawn to be super good or realistic, I just didn't think it looked half bad so I shared it because I haven't posted in a little while.

Also I'm in no way religious and I hope nobody takes offense or anything that it's a drawing of angel and devil-like-looking girls. I know religion is a touchy subject around here sometimes... so... sorry.

Elf-mage girl. I like elf-mage girls.

Also I don't really draw guys that much because I just find females easier. With guys I'm all like, "What do I do with the chest?" and they end up looking a little blocky, I guess.

User avatar #37958 to #37955 - scrumdiddlyumpshus (09/29/2013) [-]
That's what I was hoping for yes.
User avatar #37960 to #37958 - Zeigh (09/29/2013) [-]
M'kay, just making sure as people confuse criticism with just being a dick.
So first of all you need to work on anatomy. The heads are too large, the arms you're drawing are actually longer than the legs, it should be the other way around and the eyes need some work too.
It seems like your trying to go for an anime look which is fine but if you want your characters too look even marginally realistic you'll need to study some anatomy. I'd recommend tracing pictures of people so you can get used to it.

Also concerning the drawing of men, blocky is actually pretty common place if you're drawing a buff guy, but studying anatomy should help you with male figures as well.
User avatar #37964 to #37960 - scrumdiddlyumpshus (09/29/2013) [-]
I'm perfectly aware of the bad anatomy, I've always drawn like this. And believe me, I've tried proper anatomy. I just find it so hard, though. And yes, what you're saying below, I need to get better paper.
User avatar #37965 to #37964 - Zeigh (09/29/2013) [-]
Sure, but just because it's tradition to do something doesn't mean it's good.
If you want to be able to draw better then you need to learn anatomy and how your materials interact with each other.

I'd show you some of my drawings but I'm not sure if that would be considered blowing my own horn or not.
User avatar #37970 to #37965 - scrumdiddlyumpshus (09/29/2013) [-]
i don't think it'd be blowing your own horn. It's just showing an example. I'd love to see one of your drawings.

I have some questions. Have you ever had art classes? Took me 5-7 years to perfect a skull and pretty much body structures...
User avatar #38282 to #38263 - Zeigh (10/04/2013) [-]
I've been taking classes, (collectively mind you) for about 3.5 years. 2 years in a school which I promptly flunked out of then 1.5 years with a teacher who's employed at a nearby Michaels hobby shop on a weekly basis.

My problem with drawing has always been drawing from memory and imagination.
I can easily draw from a subject so for me to draw anything I need a LOT of references.
I like to think I'm improving though.
User avatar #37961 to #37960 - azelot (09/29/2013) [-]
also he should get a new pencil (softer) or draw in better sheets ...they seem..blurry and overtraced
#37967 to #37961 - scrumdiddlyumpshus (09/29/2013) [-]
I do have better paper, just not a lot of it, so I want to use all the crappy paper up before I use all the better stuff. I have used some of the better paper, though, it warps way less. Here's some drawings I did on it.
User avatar #37973 to #37967 - azelot (09/29/2013) [-]
theres a huge difference, do you have a sketchbook? and as zeigh said before, study anatomy, the head is easier to learn. even if you're trying to make cartoons or your own style there're certain rules you must follow. good luck!
User avatar #37980 to #37973 - scrumdiddlyumpshus (09/29/2013) [-]
I have 2 sketchbooks. The crappy one with, of course, a bunch of paper, and the one I used to draw the one right above. With probably only about five or six pages.
User avatar #37962 to #37961 - Zeigh (09/29/2013) [-]
The pencil doesn't really matter as you can manipulate it pretty easily. You're right about the paper though, it seems really thin so the warping is probably from scrum placing their hand on the paper while drawing.

User avatar #38266 to #38265 - azelot (10/04/2013) [-]
hard pencils destroy your paper if you apply a lot of pressure, soft pencils write really smooth but really soft pencils tend to smudge and fuck up the drawing much easier if you dont handle them well.
User avatar #38267 to #38266 - edwardyeap (10/04/2013) [-]
Hard pencils huh... I use mechanical pencils with either 0.5mm/0.7mm lead. Don't know if it's known at your place but it's Buncho branded, I have no problems with it.

User avatar #38271 to #38269 - azelot (10/04/2013) [-]
just use a razor and cut them like a spear too bad softer pencils break so easily
