I'm far from the artistic type, but I really want to do something sweet for my boyfriend for Vista Day even though I think the holiday is totally lame. I got the idea to draw this, but I've never drawn on a tablet before and I'm afraid it'll such and he'll think it's dumb. What do you think? Advice on how to improve it? Would this be a lame gift?

Giving this alone, yeah it's probably be a little lame/cheesy (you may also come off as being cheap). It's a nice gesture, and it shows you care, so I'd go through with it, but also get him something else.

The problem is I'm always super broke so I don't know if I'll be able to afford an actual gift for him and my cooking is complete and utter shit so that's out of the question.

It would be a good gesture, but a lame gift in my opinion..
The character is leaning to the left so it's off balance.

don't use sketch up
use blender, maya, rhino... you name it, but just not sketchup. that is for architecture and works very well with it, but not for hard surface modelling

How do I motivate myself? How do you guys do it? I can't force myself to practice for very long and I dunno why. I want to be a good artist, I want to be able to draw Valkyrie Cain and Ahri and Koom Valley and some original shit I churn out from my mind but in order to get anywhere near that I need to practice, and I need to do it for YEARS until I'm even close, like I enjoy drawing but I don't enjoy failing and I simply can't motivate myself to stop procrastinating and start doing shit that will get me where I want to be

If you want art as a carear then ask your self, do i want to practice drawing 5 hours a day every day for a week or work in a job i dont want to be in?

It's something you've got to play around with. Make duplicate layers, change the mode sets, blur the heck out of it, change the values, etc.

This is something I made with just three duplicate layers with blur and different modes set to them. This is what I prefer out of it, but yeah, it's something you've got to play around with and find out what you like.

Depends on the photo. Turn the saturation down and the lightness up in photoshop, or try that rainbow gradient in a big circle on another layer and set the layer to soft light.

So i recently draw this, I just got some nice pens within the last month and I starting to try and use them for shading and outlining, before last month I've pretty much only used paper and pencil my entire life.

there are only a couple shades, so it's a little hard to get it exactly how I want it, but does the shading look good?I think the lineart is pretty solid.

She's supposed to be my character from dark souls 2, since I was drawing in-between summons i figured I might as well draw her

This is my standard recomendation for first time tablet buyers.
www.amazon.com/Huion-H610-Pro-Graphics-Drawing/dp/

Wacom is a more common/popular brand, but this is the tablet with roughly equivalent specs to the one above from them. store.wacom.com/us/en/product/CTH680/
Wacom is a bit like Apple, sure it's nice, but way overpriced.

Okay so this one goes out to all the art experts on this board.

I want to know if my drawing method is good.

I kinda have a hard time seeing a picture in my head and essentially tracing it onto paper (is that what really good artists do?), so instead, I essentially come up with a vague snapshot of what I want and then assemble into the finished product.

Right now I'm just trying to understand form. Not so much detail.

Picture is a drawing I did in maybe 10 minutes using the "assemble" method described above. Is this a bad habit, or should I keep practicing this way?

Going off what the other guy said about chicken scratch, depending on how you actually compose the entire picture scribbling can actually look good and give it a certain feeling. Stan Lee and John Buscema said that if done properly scribbling can help to flesh out a character.
And about tracing you're idea, I think that's what every artist wishes they could do. The best thing I figured is be very loose in the beginning to just put something on paper and you can continue to refine it into what you actually wanted.
And lastly I hate drawing things as cubes first and then erasing and all that but one thing I will strongly suggest is to measure the body about 6.5 heads down for the average height and maybe one or two more for heroic and bold characters to make them stand out.

Some artists see what they want to draw on the paper and just draw it. Some artists don't necessarily see anything on the paper so they'll just try different things and see what works. Some artists just "feel it out", they just start drawing and see what comes out of it.

I would recommend using simple shapes like cubes and cylinders for construction. You're getting the proportions somewhat down with the wireframe method but it lacks form. Watch some Proko videos or something.

im no expert, still a young learner, but heres some stuff: dont use scratchy lines, aka chickenscratch. go for longer, smoother lines, itll look smoother and better and take less time, most likely. get some anatomy studying going on, maybe try andrew loomis figure drawing for all its worth. really great book. this ones up to you: try using lighter lines, unless you plan on using a kneaded eraser or tracing over.
