So for my FMP (Final Major Project) I'm going to be producing 4/5 different promotional posters for classmates who are producing films for their FMP's.

This one's a draft for a short documentary about a trip around South Wales where they give each other different challenges to perform on a BMX.

Any opinions on how to improve this? I'm trying to keep it as simplistic and minimalist as possible.

There is a beautiful speed painting tutorial of a parrot going around and it's really helpful. I'm thinking of painting my own version and adding it to my portfolio. The problem is it's gotten so popular so fast, I'm already seeing imitation (or people copying the speed painting in different ways but were clearly using it as a reference) going around as well. I want to do something like this too but I I don't want to do the exact same thing, I don't want to copy it. What ways could I use the video as a reference but not just start rip it off like other people have?

It's okay to copy if you are doing it for studying. Just don't claim it as your own and you are good. Posting on deviantart is also not really recommened if you copied it.
Don't get ashamed that you have to use a reference.

What is even used in that video. It looks like watercolour. There are different techniques and tricks you could use with this medium. Google around, read a book about it, copy nice pictures just to get basics down (asuming you just started out).

Pick up other pictures of parrots and/or other birds to make up your own position of the parrot. It's totally fine to take references from many artworks and photographs to create your own.

Try looking for other pictures and focus on the parts you like most about it, then mix all those favorite parts into one artwork.

The only way to still use that picture and make it not as clear that you were using it as reference is to find another picture for your main reference, but taking other pictures hides it too.

Cool, but I'd go with a simpler, more consistence style for your comics. Drawing really detailed like that takes longer and it's not really worth it and a simple comic style will be received about the same.

I think the paint bucket will work, but if the program is anything like photoshop, you're going to have to adjust the tolerance slider.

photo manipulation: Adobe Photoshop
video editing/cutting: Adobe Premiere (or Sony Vegas Pro which is like a slightly weaker but easier-to-use Premiere)
video effects: Adobe After Effects

Is there any piece you've viewed in the past year or so that has influenced you more than ever?
This piece, Keith Tyson's large field array, really sparked an interest in memory for me - which I've taken to printmaking in expressing the relation of abstract imagery and actions
