Should the art board be NSFW? You could probebly get away with posting likes of statue of david etc but cant have study threads etc using unclothed anatomy ):

How do you guys make your poses?

I kinda make idiotic looking stick figures, then start adding mass, and maybe edit around a bit to equal out the proportions, all that but my poses almost never come out as i have them in my head. Any tips?

(02/13/2015) [-]
Learn more about muscle anatomy, it's not just about adding mass, you should add the right bulk at the right place.
Then there's perspective, your right shoulder for example shouldn't be entirely visible in this pose, it should be somewhat hidden by the pecs and the trapeze.

Advice: draw skeletons (with the hip bones and the rib cage), it should help you locate the insertions of some muscles and their proportions.

Hmm... did you want the focal point to be where the limb intersect? The flow of directional forces if nice but I'd flip the golden ratio diagram to where the eye spirals in to focus on the head. It also seems to lack composition elements on the points where the lines and spiral intersect. Overall it's a good first try but keep practicing.

What is the golden ratio about exactly?
#68384 to #68379 - alleksi

(02/13/2015) [-]
Golden ratio is a mathematical ratio that, for some reason, has many aesthetically pleasing features, similar to the rule of thirds for example. It is also often found in nature as well.

The golden ratio is: (a+b)/a=a/b=φ=1.61803...

basically, draw a line, now divide the line into two sections, a & b; where a is the longer part and b is the shorter part, in such manner that B's relation to A [a/b] is the same as A's relation to the whole line [(a+b)/a]

In composition the golden ratio can be applied similarly to the rule of thirds. Additionally golden ratio can be used to create "golden spiral", which in composition can be used to "lead the eye" which makes things located in the center of the spiral more interesting.

To make a golden spiral draw a square with the length of a. divide one side of the square according to the golden ratio and extend the whole square into a "golden rectangle (just a rectangle that's divided according to the golden rule). divide the shorter part into two parts according to the golden rule so you have two squares (a*a and b*b) and one rectangle (c*b). then again divide c*b according to the golden rule so you get a square c*c and rectangle c*d and continue like so. if you can't remember which side is supposed to be the shorter part, remember that the squares are always on the "outside" so to say

Obviously the golden ratio is just something that you can just eyeball.

Well, the general rule of thumb is to draw what you see, and not what your brain thinks it sees.

A quick way to check yourself is to take a picture of what you're working on, and mirror it. This will exaggerate any odd places or mistakes you've made.

I've done it a number of times and thought, "holy shit that's bad". Then I went and fixed the fucked areas, and the drawing turned out much better.

As long as you can draw the shape, the guidelines are superfluous.

I will first say, this is done in charcoal, most likely on newsprint. This is not pencil. I would recommend for you to take a figure drawing class or at least find a good resource for information. I would recommend just torrenting a gnomon lecture (Basic Fundamentals). When you begin to draw you must understand what you are drawing. You are not simply drawing a shape. You must be able to visualize this shape in 3 dimensions in your head to truly be able to properly and quickly draw a form that is as complex as a human head. If you are drawing the outline or just looking at in 2d , you will not learn anything. You will learn to copy, not draw.

>Learn basic anatomy
>Study the form of the skull
>Look at legitimate resources online
>Take a figure drawing class
>Practice, but understand what you are practicing. You can practice indefinitely and still be horrible because you never learned fundamentals.

(no particular order)

Hope this helped.

Sit yourself down. And force yourself to do it. I was in this position a few months ago. Forcing myself while I talked with an artist I respected a whole lot really helped me get out of that funk. But it was my decision to force myself. Not anyone elses. I eventually wound up liking the picture I was working on.

Also don't ever make a pact with yourself to never do a complete work, especially because you think you're not good enough at completing something. You won't improve by not doing it. So if you never finish a work how can you improve at finishing?

is finishing something you know is flawed better than starting that thing again or going back to a previous stage?

Well don't be disheartened just because I haven't experienced the same thing. There are definitely artists who just want to do this as a hobby. Troll some art sites, or go on twitter to find likeminded people and have a little heart to heart talk with them. Overcome obstacles through communication and collaboration.

Then study and practice. You will get better. If you are a self motivating individual, you'll get the job done and if it's important to you, you'll find a way. If not you'll find an excuse.

80% of the battle of art is mental. Go in with the right mentality and you'll be surprised how much easier it is.

It's a mixed bag. If you don't have any time constraints like hours spent vs money gained for commission then go for it. If it's not a commission and more a personal work and again money or time spent isn't an issue then go for it.

But if you see that something is flawed I do NOT recommend starting over completely. You will grow tired of the subject matter and that initial spark you had for drawing it will become dim very quickly. Plus you may have lost the initial idea you had for it in the first place that might have made you start in the first place.

The things is though if you see an error starting over isn't exactly necessary. You just address the problem as needed. Like say you notice something off distractingly off about your form but you're already at the shading and detail step. No need to worry. Just make an extra layer, and draw out how the form would look were it adjusted to where you wanted and then add those corrections to your color and shading layers should you be using them. Then delete the lines and combine layers as needed. But again, it's all about whether or not the problem is worth it to YOU and ONLY YOU to fix. Unless you're doing something for some company or such, nobody's going to notice and some might even commend you for something that you thought was an error.

I find myself noticing and trying to fix flaws almost as much as I actually draw the thing

It absolutely can be to someone who's very livelihood is dependent on their artwork. And if you want to go into this professionally you'll have to lock that down. I think what might be the problem is you giving yourself too much time and you keep noticing where things could improve. Try this. Next artwork you do. Give yourself a realistic time constraint. One that's less than you'd expect but not so low that you couldn't possibly achieve it. Artist tend to overthink things in their picture but giving oneself a time constraint helps prevent that and can, when done right, make the overall quality of your work bear a greater level of consistency because you're needing to consider all factors in the final product.

I don't really plan to do it professionally. I don't think that'd ever work out.

Do one ever stop thinking one's work is flawed?

No. Never. It'll never happen. Whenever you draw, you'll always think to yourself, "Oh that looks nice... but if I had done this..." An artist will always see the flaws in their own work because you and only you know the difference between what you meant to do and what actually happened on paper.

You will though, learn to live with mistakes you have made that weren't resolved and work around them, and learn to overcome mistakes that you could solve.

Then that falls outside of my area of knowledge. I have a reason to improve beyond just wanting to be able to do it and I've found that to be a powerful motivator.

There are people who've made art their hobby and a lot of them turn out amazing but I don't know how they do it. And I don't know any artists who've made art their hobby to send you to talk to. I'm sorry man.

Why is it outside your area of knowledge? It's still art. Yours is a hobby you've made into a source of income.
Mine is a hobby that I just want to improve on cos tryna make it into a job seems stressful.

Since I've made it my job, I have a motivator to improve outside of the reasoning "Just because I want to." If I don't draw I go hungry and can't afford rent and I'm out on the streets. Sometimes it is stressful but it's also rewarding. And this is the world I understand most.

What motivates someone to draw just because he wants to get better and draw cool shit seems directionless to me and I don't understand how one could possibly try improve just for that reason. Though I know it's possible, it's something I haven't experienced and don't fully understand so my opinion on the subject would be steeped in conjecture.

Step 1: Figure out WHY you dont finish, for me it was because I really didnt know how.
Step 2: Figure out HOW to fix that, for me it was doing studies of stuff with complicated lighting
Step 3: Apply what you've learned to a request. This one is important, it will keep you accountable and no matter how shitty you are, people love seeing their ideas drawn.

God fucking dammit! Now the censor bar company will never fucking go out of business!

Too big for a singular censor bar.

So anyway here's this thing. Kinda sloppy as a result of me trying to overstretch myself and do a picture with a background in it in 2 hours and 30 minutes. But lesson learned. Pictures with backgrounds is an immediate jump in price. At least until I can learn how to work Sketchup properly to 3D that shit!
