whats some good ways to learn and to show 3d form? my drawings look a bit flat
User avatar #70488 to #70478 - groulgarigon ONLINE (03/20/2015) [-]
A cross contour is a soft line you draw across the form as if it were a line drawn on the actual body. I'm about to post a picture showing what one is. They make for good notes reminding you of the 3D the object your drawing possesses before taking it to final render.

Alternatively you could draw little details on the figure that actually hint at the dimensions of the form. A warping of a tattoo for example to look like it's wrapping around the arm. Alternatively drawing musculature in such a way that it in itself denotes the 3D form.

Honestly i think I like the lineart more. not that the colored version is bad, but the lineart has some great contrast in lighting especially on batman that i feel really make the image stand out. just my oppinion though. great job!

If we could somehow organize dates and stuff for a certain person to post their art for discussion I think it would add a lot of organization and activity to the board.

You're obviously still starting out,but eh,as many, you've got the right idea behind all this.there's potential.

#70401 to #70377 - teoyeezy (03/19/2015) [-]
be harsh? okay, heres my harsh advice

Your sketchbook isnt some precious diary with pristine drawings. Dating your drawings and adding signatures isn't going to do anything, itll only make you refrain from fixing your drawings.
Now, for the criticism that isn't based in personal preference -

Either you can't plan, or you're copping out from drawing the whole body. Block out shapes of the figure first and pay attention to the foreshortening especially. the3 feet wont look like that in a natural pose like that, so use a reference, or if you are, actually look at it and stop generalizing. add some space to the drawing, its uninteresting without any space for the figure to relate to and also shows immaturity in understanding figure/space relationships. thats a huge thing for figure drawing.

this is just a sketch. do a thousand more and with different media. don't erase, use bold markers and force yourself to never pick the marker up. pay attention to variation in line weight.
nothing i say will help you more than you practicing a lot, and not just practicing, but seeing. pay attention to very little things, like the distance of the calf from the ass, the angle of the panties and shit. work hard.

- mandatory portrait by Kollwitz because drawing is mentioned -
User avatar #70403 to #70401 - HeyLookImaTaco (03/19/2015) [-]
Thank man, appreciate you taking the time to reply. It is just a sketch, but its the first one I've done in a while, I'm trying to get back into drawing and I know there is a tun of room for improvement.
User avatar #70404 to #70403 - teoyeezy (03/19/2015) [-]
If you don't mind, some of my advice would to also fill your sketchbook up with drawings of your hands, feet, etc

Ever done any blind contours? dont lift your drawing tool up and only look at the subject. my advice is to do this for at least 10 pages, even if its just really quickly. but do it a lot, its a good warmup and gets you back into the groove of looking - that's usually what people lack when they try to get back into drawing. coming back after a while leads to a lot of generalizing.
do you want me to post some of my sketchbook pages? it could help with visually showing you how i fill up space and train my drawing techniques
User avatar #70406 to #70404 - HeyLookImaTaco (03/19/2015) [-]
I wouldn't mind, and again thanks for the advice, I have to look if I'm drawing anything to begin with to be honest. Its hard for me to draw without a reference so I use them a lot. I may not be looking a the right things though. Feel free to post what you want, I'm taking all the help I can.
