I think the first one works better. The reds seem to be muted and blend with the background in the 2nd one. In the first one the colors pop and really work well. Good job.

One thing that's always confused me is that branch of "Abstract" art. in particular Picasso.
Everyone always says how excellent his works are and how masterful his technique is- I've been looking at a bit of his stuff lately and it really doesn't seem that remarkable at all. Did a google and all that came up was that he's great...not a lot on the why.

I won't launch into a tirade about how it's "all just squiggles" or anything, but I thought I'd ask you art-based guys what exactly is so great about his works (I'm a ecologist by trade and an orchestra violinist in my spare time; can't claim to know a whole lot about art).

Thanks

i think it was more to do with how unique it was to his time period, at the time the only work that was really excepted were huge masterful oil paintings that were as real life as possible, and although he could draw like this when he was 17, he decided to go a different way and discover his own path taking inspiration from African masks, also if you look at his cubism paintings you'll notice that he has combined different angels of a subject into one which was rather unique and gave it a whole other appearance, so really it's down to suddenly showing the world his true style and showing that not all art comes in the form of realistic pieces, i personally don't enjoy his work that much, i'm more into Francis Bacon who curiously enough took a lot of inspiration from Picasso, but this history behind Picasso's work is wonderful and i don't even like history that much.

that's pretty fucking neat
I would say
If you want
You can try and add a background
User avatar #60126 to #60107 - hsm (08/25/2014) [-]
i will add a background but i don't guarantee that it will look good, since the lighting and shading has already been done on Ippo which may not match the background. But i'll give it a go.

Wasn't the Sendo fight fucking awesome?
User avatar #60130 to #60129 - hsm (08/25/2014) [-]
Yeah man, believe it or not this is the first time any show had me actually cheering and jumping up and down. Like middle aged men or drunk teenagers do with most sports on TV. Also when Sendo was unable to get up from his corner i heart started racing because i thought the nigga was dead. Seriously fucking LOVE this show right now.

But the second time through, I just fell in love with it
It was almost like I was watching it again for the first time
I know what you mean, that shit always had me at the edge of my seat
Fucking glorious

User avatar #60091 to #60065 - thirdjess (08/24/2014) [-]
flat backgrounds are a no-no. Add some shading to it! Even just plain colour and a spot of brightness for a focal point would be an improvement.
User avatar #60083 to #60065 - energytwinkie (08/24/2014) [-]
the girl looks good! backgrounds are hard but maybe the issue is that its kind of bluured or something? you should make it with the same pen you used to line / color it (trust me it took me too long to realize this)
also i havent seen you around since the live drawing board, maybe im just not observant or have you been gone?
User avatar #60106 to #60083 - picklesand (08/24/2014) [-]
I haven't been around much cause I usually just lack the motivation to draw anything o.o
I'm going to try to get back into it, but I don't know how much time I'll really have since school is starting again soon

Rule of thumb, generally hands are about the same size as the face, manga style hands are half the width of the face, but the length of the face. Long and skinny.
#60072 to #60064 - groulgarigon (08/24/2014) [-]
It's not bad. I wouldn't rely on pre-made background images anymore. It makes an inconsistency in the picture that is very off putting. There are few things in art more off putting. You're not bad. Look forward to you improving.

User avatar #60071 to #60062 - ohmeghon (08/24/2014) [-]
Tip for face structure. Your shading on her chin is rigid and almost looks like a "lightning bolt" travelling down her face. This denotes a masculine trait in jaw structure. For feminine features make it smoother and curvy, softer and less abrasive. The feminine form (even for Mikasa) should represent a certain grace.

Excellent work though, very distinguished style

Been reading through Keys to drawing today. the second half of it was things that I already knew (visual measuring, light, form all the basics), but the first half was actually quite interesting with how it approaches drawing. The author is basically like don't worry about it dude lets make some scribbles, and inspired by that I did some scribbling.

And it was really fun. no stress. just scribbling. not really giving a shit about anything. I even decided to draw animals so I wouldn't be held back by things that I think I know about the subject.
