The only reason why M4 Sherman would be a coffin would be because they where fighting German Tanks. The Panzer 3 is a light tank with no advantage vs a Medium armor tank like the M4 Sherman.

The M4 Sherman was effective in the Pacific Campaign against Japanese armour.

he M4 Sherman Firefly was heavy hitting tank which was a considerable threat to German Armour in the Normandy and was responsible for destroying German Panther's and Tiger's and taking on 70% of the German Tank strength under the use of Commonwealth Forces.

Anyway the M4 Sherman at it's base was an improved M3 Lee. When deployed in Africa it became clear that the Standard M4 was superior to Pazner 3's and Short Barrelled Panzer 4's and was about even against long barrelled Panzer 4's.

The only reason they would have trouble was because of the development of German heavy tanks like the Tiger I and Tiger II but the US offset that with Fighter Bombers, and Artillery. They made so many M4 Shermans that US Infantry divisions typically had more Tanks than German Armour divisions giving the US the massive advantage.

Anyway you look at it the Presence of the M4 made a massive difference to the War in both the Pacific and Europe and did provide US forces with an advantage.

I would suggest watching Index first, at least the first season. It will help you understand the world it's set in, the characters, and of course, it's got the adorable Index.

However, it's not needed. You can watch Railgun without watching Index, up to you.

Railgun then index or else you're gonna backtrack a bit into the history of Misaka.
