The hollows are pretty much just the monster of the week, then get ignored in favor of power-upped giga bad guys, which is a real bummer since I liked the hollows a lot as well. I only made it past the Soul Society arc before I dropped Bleach, but maybe you'll get further than I did.

Bleach gets better with the Soul Society arc. Just keep watching I guess, the first couple of episodes are not that great, except I can't help but love the animation and the soundtrack.

I actually really like when the protagonist(s) lose(s) on occasion, especially when there are tangible and lasting consequences to their failure, such as a friend's death or something equally tragic. It makes the underdog struggle of the outmanned and outgunned good guys feel a little more believable and a little less eye-roll worthy. That's why Final Fantasy 3 (I think that's the one) is one of my favorite games of all time; halfway through the game you lose to Kefka, who almost destroys the planet, and the next half is you trying to fix your horrendous failure and actually beat the big bad this time through. It was heavy hitting when you actually lost (because how could the good guy lose?) and can really add to a story when it's done right.

I think that they should win most of their fights, but also lose a few as it makes for a more interesting story.

I like balances of win and loss, which is probably why I like KHR!

I feel they need to lose at some point or another, I think most good anime involve the main character getting their ass beat a few times. Although i dislike when the opponent is said to be the "strongest in the universe/country/area" only to have a bigger bad ass pop out of nowhere in a week.
