kudos, so seldom does anything car related get thumbs here.

also: Mazda recently stopped making rotary engines for production. they're still producing and researching them, they just use more gas so it's an in house project now

they burn tons of oil too

To bad these engines can only last about 100K
User avatar #39 - cfranche (06/01/2012) [-]
Fuckin love me a good ol rotary! There's a reason rx7's are so ballin.

What's your answer when my Rx8 is 123k and still running perfectly :) ?
User avatar #36 - majorbane (06/01/2012) [-]
i like these engines, i think they're a pretty damn neat design. but i like my diesel engines. stupid amount of horsepower and torque can come from a diesel if you put the money into it

Since when are engine animations funny? Cool, but in the wrong place
User avatar #33 - tehmudkipz (06/01/2012) [-]
This is awesome because i have decided that my next car will be an rx7

i think rotary engines were invented so that spanish people can bring them to race tracks and then do nothing but rev them up and be annoying in the pits. I'm just trying to have a cheeseburger between passes but noooooooooo i gotta listen to those annoying contraptions popping and farting until they hit their narrow powerband up at 9500 rpms or whatever ridiculous point in which they actually make power. You watch them stage, then they rev up to the point right before they should explode then when they take off its so anti climatic.

haha it says "wank"

Gotta love them rotarys!
User avatar #23 - uppitywhitey (06/01/2012) [-]
rotary engines are cool and all, until they blow up after 10,000 miles. i do love rx-7s though.

why are you guys doing this?
why are you guys doing this?

Aaah my good fellow, that is not quite true!

There is no explosion in and Otto, Diesel or Wankel but the it is mistaken for an "explosion" which is actually a combustion! ;)
User avatar #77 to #20 - sheldortheconquero (06/01/2012) [-]
Yeah that is true, I was just keeping it simple so more people could actually understand what was going on, and see the connection between suck, squeeze, bang, blow :)

Suck
Squeeze
Bang
Blow

This makes me think back to Basic Propulsion... Oh the good times

Heh. My automotive teacher told the class that one. Some of them were having trouble keeping the intake, compression, power, and exhaust strokes in line (for some reason).

He's also got the firing order for a straight six. (I forget the make and model it was used in... Chrysler I think.) 1-6-5-1-3-2 Execept he broke it down for us.

Cylinder 1 fires twice, 4 doesn't, seems legit.
User avatar #192 to #110 - tonydalion (06/01/2012) [-]
...Knew that didn't look right... cylinder five and four go together I believe. I swear I'm dyslexic after 11PM...

i know that these engines have a power stroke every 3 strokes. but it looks like they could have a power stroke every single stroke. why dont they?
User avatar #18 to #16 - TheShark (06/01/2012) [-]
it is constantly in a power stroke, more or less, the gif just shows one stroke all the way around through its cycle.
User avatar #14 - antigravitycake (05/31/2012) [-]
that looks like it causes massive friction. and lots of vibration if not perfectly balanced with other cylinders
#19 to #14 - N. Korean citizen (06/01/2012) [-]
what cylinders? and this has very few moving parts compared to a piston engine so less vibration o and oil is burned with the fuel for the friction

#13 - afrosquid (05/31/2012) [-]
hell yeah rotary engine

wankel engines make me jizz my pants.

Dat RX7!

Admission, Compression, Explosion, Escape.
Otherwise known as Admission, Compression, Ignition, Exhaustion.
Or Suck, Squezze, Bang, Blow.
I was taught that when I was 13. I've been using it ever since.
User avatar #8 - excalibar (05/31/2012) [-]
I thought it was called a rotary engine.
#15 to #8 - N. Korean citizen (05/31/2012) [-]
Well actually the engine is called the Wankel Rotary. Most commonly seen in the Mazda Rx series cars because of its light weight and high power production and immediate response.
User avatar #9 to #8 - sheldortheconquero (05/31/2012) [-]
Nope, it's named after it's inventor Felix Wankel. It may have other names that I don't know about but everyone and in all the books I have read about the engine it's referd to as the Wankel engine.
