My friend got me Bioshock Infinite for Christmas and i've heard it's awesome, but my OTHER friend that's right, and have TWO WHOLE FRIENDS (or at least 1.7) tells me I should play the first two bioshock games before infinite. and I don't have the first two games. should i wait until i've played them, or just jump into infinite?
User avatar #1158225 to #1158108 - Gonnafly ONLINE (01/25/2015) [-]
I mean the story isn't really connected so playing infinite first might be good since you won't immediately realize how shit it is in comparison.
User avatar #1158137 to #1158108 - thundagawd (01/25/2015) [-]
The whole of the plot can still be understood regardless of whether or not you've played the first 2 (1 & 2 take place in Rapture in 1961 & 1968 respectively, Infinite takes place in Columbia in 1912), the settings & timelines are completely different, only thing you'll really miss out on are little references here and there, and a BIG Easter Egg at the very end of the game.
User avatar #1158135 to #1158108 - tearsoblood (01/25/2015) [-]
your friend meant that the first 2 installments were better than Infinite and therefore you should play them first, but there's no actual direct connection in the story between the first 2 parts and Infinite. You can just start playing Infinite now and get the other 2 in some future sale or something
User avatar #1158129 to #1158108 - cozer (01/25/2015) [-]
You don't have to, but there are a bunch of nice little references and stuff in infinite that you won't get unless you've played the other games. Plus the other bioshock games are awesome so you should play them anyways.
User avatar #1158127 to #1158108 - spaceking (01/25/2015) [-]
Infinite is set in the same universe but the lore and setting are completely different, you don't need to play either 1 or 2 to enjoy or understand Infinite in any way.

Go ahead and play Infinite.

User avatar #1158118 to #1158108 - unikornking (01/25/2015) [-]
If you have a basic understanding of the lore in the first one I think you'll be good. Simply watching the first 30mins from a youtube vid should be good.
User avatar #1158120 to #1158118 - shamrockd (01/25/2015) [-]
But it's definitely important to at least know some of the story? I can do that; any recommendations for learning this stuff or will any source do an adequate job?
User avatar #1158121 to #1158120 - unikornking (01/25/2015) [-]
I wouldn't say story is important, I've only made it like 1 hour into Bioshock 1 tops, I can never go through it because it's boring to me no matter how many times I try. Basically you just need to know the setting for the first game and then you're good, infinite doesn't have much to do with it at all except some small stuff at the end of the game as far as I know.
User avatar #1158110 to #1158108 - desacabose (01/25/2015) [-]

This may have been done before, or this may already be in the works, but someone just hear me out.
Picture this: a Middle Earth strategy game.
Think about how fucking cool this would be. Wage massive armies across different areas of Middle Earth, you could fight in different Ages and areas of Middle Earth, so you could be fighting at the Black Gates, The Lonely Mountain, anywhere. You could play as different kingdoms and each different one would sort of have hero units, where you could command Aragorn or Gandalf, sort of how Empire at War did it. There could also be a campaign mode, where you could fight against the armies of Morgoth or Sauron, or you could go through a questline like in the Hobbit. Like I said, this may already have been done but how cool would this be?

Considering that the "new" 3DS XL is coming out in feb. and I currently do not have a handheld, should I buy it? I've seen a lot of reviews saying its not a big improvement over the regular. Should I save the 25$ or just buy the new one?

It has a stick for camera control, and cameras that use face tracking to keep the image 3D.
User avatar #1158139 to #1158054 - thundagawd (01/25/2015) [-]
If you really plan to buy a 3DS, go for the new one, it has a slightly faster processor that gets it through load times more quickly, it has facial recognition software that detects the angle your face is at in relation to the screen that allows the 3D display to adapt in real time so it doesn't fuck up your eyes as badly (Say what you will about the 3D, it definitely helps in some games, I used it a lot for the puzzles in TLOZ: A Link Between Worlds) , a C-stick that functions as a second circle pad, effectively allowing you to control the camera far better in many games (I'm looking at you Monster Hunter). Because of the modified processor, there will also be games exclusive to the "new" 3DS, such as Xenoblade Chronicles and whatnot.

Getting an Old 3DS and buying the CIrcle Pad Pro attachment would pretty much cost the same as just buying a "new" 3DS, which already comes with a build in C-stick that functions as a second Circle Pad, so that alone is pretty good justification for getting the "new" model over the old one, and in the coming years, there might be a game you really want to play that will be exclusive to the "new" model, so that's another reason to go for that one over the older one.
User avatar #1158147 to #1158139 - thundagawd (01/25/2015) [-]
It also has 2 additional shoulder buttons, which also open up more options regarding control, and taking into account the additional shoulder buttons and the addition of a second circle pad, we might see some FPS's come out exclusively to the "new" 3DS (Maybe a Metroid game somewhere down the line, that would be nice).

So I'm conflicted. I REALLY like how the Insect Glaive plays. I usually play Dual Blades are the Insect Glaive is very fast-paced like the Dual Blades. But it seems like it's pretty much flips MH into easy mode. Once you get the 3 buffs you're an infinite combo, high damage machine that rips everything apart.
I'll be playing MH4U by myself for 99% of the game, so I feel somewhat justified in using it, but I also feel like it might undermine the difficulty of the game.
#1158144 to #1158017 - thundagawd (01/25/2015) [-]
Be that as it may, keep in mind that tagging the right parts on a monster (especially if it's a fast moving monster like a Zinogre or a Nargacuga) to get the triple buff can take some time (Even if you're using the Pheromone Strike attack at the end of every combo), and the time you take to gather buffs is time you won't be hitting the monster as often, which is gonna be a drop in your damage output.

Also, The insect Glaive also deals a mix of Slash and Impact damage depending on what attack you do (sometimes doing both in the attacks where you hit with both ends of the Glaive), and some monsters have different resistances to different damage types depending on where you hit them, as shown in the photo (in some cases this can even cause a "bounce" if you hit a heavily armored area with the wrong damage type). All you get to test it on in the game is a Great Jaggi (Literally the weakest of the "Large Monsters"), a Tetsucabra (Another pretty low-tier monster, about on-par with an Arzuros or a Lagombi), and the Gore Magala (Which, despite being a Flagship Monster, isn't THAT strong considering it will be the target in some Low-rank quests according to the Wiki). It'll probably be a more complex weapon to use against G-rank monsters and such

Monster Hunter has some of the best weapon balancing in any action game out there, so even though it might seem pretty OP during the demo, chances are it'll feel like a pretty reasonable weapon once we actually manage to get our hands on the full game.
User avatar #1158146 to #1158144 - thundagawd (01/25/2015) [-]
Also, use whichever weapon you love the most. Monster Hunter doesn't restrict us with classes or anything like an RPG does, you can switch weapon type whenever you want if you get bored of one or prefer a different one for specific fights. If the insect Glaive "feels right" in your hands, then go for it

DLC for this game felt like I was playing a new instalment rather than just bioshock 2 but with lasers. It kept the gameplay refershing to me while still being scary and stuff

I've mostly heard complaints that the game isn't as "philosophically deep" as the first game. But a story like the first game's is really hard to follow up in quality. So I really didn't mind a sequel more oriented to action.

Definitely gonna buy The Evil Within because the demo was good.

Dude playing it right now, no regrets whatsoever. I thought I wouldn't like it at first because I hate when games are widescreen, but you quickly get used to it.

This whole fucking game is how a horror game should be, 10/10
User avatar #1158027 to #1158020 - alexanderburns ONLINE (01/25/2015) [-]
But...almost every game of the past several years is made for widescreen

I should probably play that demo before I buy it.

Dead Rising 1 from back in the day. Didn't know the entire game was going to be timed so heavily, but after a couple of playthroughs, it made it all the more enjoyable.

Well I didn't buy it but playing the demo got me the game

Binary Domain, played the demo nearly a dozen times and I was talking to a friend who really enjoyed the game and he gifted it to me on steam, played through it twice so far, once on normal, once on hard doing an ironman mode (no nanomachine implants and no upgrading anyone's guns) only to find out there was a harder difficulty...

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning
I wasn't disappointed, but I wasn't greatly impressed.
It was what I expected it to be.

Having a problem with skyrim. I was playing it just about 15 minutes ago, but I closed it to do something else. Got back on, and as soon as the Bethesda cut scene was finishing it closed. No crash report. I tried about 3 more times and it did the same thing again and again. Restarted PC, and it's still doing it. Anybody have any idea what's wrong?
