There seems to be a lot of misconception involving The Biblical Flood. There was a great deluge 15,000 years ago, but there were a lot of local floods. The biblical flood most likely described this event, and if the story is to be taken literally, Noah likely gathered a pair of each animal from his immediate area, rather than the entire world. A lot of scholars seem to see the story of Noah and the Flood as closer to allegorical than historical, but nonetheless a massive flood did occur thousands of years ago.

In fact, genesis 1 states "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters." Which meant that the water was there even before biblical history began. God had created the Earth long before he terranized it. This is part of a scientific Christian theory called gap theory, which states God created the universe in the big bang long before he terranized Earth.
