I think the US version was done really well. The premise for both of them is that a police officer from present-day (~2010) gets hit by a car and wakes up in the 1970s.

The US version is only a season long, and as such manages to tell a pretty cohesive narrative: is he in a coma? Is his girlfriend going to pull the plug? What's up with all these Mars rovers he keeps seeing, and the mysterious telephone calls? Should he keep trying to get back or embrace the friends he's found? Was he ever really in 2010?

It also embraced all the swagger of the era's culture and music, and didn't take itself too seriously. That lack of grounding is probably the biggest criticism against it, but I think that it worked in the series's favour. I mean, you're talking about a cop getting time-warped back to the 1970s and dealing with psychological conspiracies - it realized that.

The acting and characters were also quite good, and the writing managed to balance the crime drama aspects of it with everything else it had going on pretty well. The ending was a massive pile of trash, but it does have a kind of sense to it.

I've only seen one episode of the British version, so I can't really say for certain, but it seemed much more flat, like a standard crime drama that happened to be set in the 1970s. British TV has a reputation for being subdued, but I think that it worked against it in this case.
