So, there was this Japanese artist named Isoda Koryusai; I think he was around in the 18th century. I like how he drew women, all delicate and cute. I wanted to show off more pics with men in them, but when a man is involved ... he's usually ******* a woman ... with his comically large dick being the most obvious thing in the picture ... I don't wanna get banned.

I'm not an expert on Japanese history, or anything, really. However, if I had to make a guess, I'd say the person with a basket on his head is a monk or a beggar, or both. I'm not sure, though. Feel free to correct me.

I'm fairly certain that's an expensive prostitute and her attendants, who are little prostitutes/slaves in training. I'm pretty sure that most expensive brothels of the time wouldn't make the girls work until they were 14 or so. I could be wrong. I use the word slaves because ... well ... most little girls in brothels at the time were SOLD by their own families. The only way out was to pay off the price the brothel paid for you, or have some rich dude buy you out and marry you. Most of even the highest class prostitutes died in the red light district (according to my limited knowledge), but some made it out, either by their own hard work or by someone else helping them. Some adult women willingly went into prostitution. How high class they got depended on each woman's situation.

I don't know if this is really an Isoda Koryusai piece ... google seemed to think it was. I think it's very pretty, though.

I have no idea what's going on here.

If you were a higher class prostitute, you were expected to write poetry and love letters, and your handwriting had to be beautiful. You also needed to speak with a specific dialect, play musical instruments, and dance very well.

I thought to myself, "Is this SFW?" Then I realized, nothing's showing. Then I thought to myself, "What the **** is wrong with those two? There's a kid right there!"

**ferociouspanda rolled image**The person with a basket on their head is called a komusõ- a monk. That's the way the government depicted them within art.
Love Japanese history and art.

Thank you! I was wondering about that! I wonder how he sees through the basket.

Also, I find your roll to be fairly relevant.

No problem -- and roll is a role, it's out of my control

Took me a while to realize that they're looking at a ball, in the third pic. Did prostitutes play with balls? Not those balls...

**thehistorylover rolled image**I think the children prostitutes to be were allowed playtime? Maybe? Maybe there was a festival going on in this pic? I dunno.

**thehistorylover used "*roll picture*"****thehistorylover rolled image**Many of the attendant girls came from peasant families. So ... yeah ... while they pretty much have their careers forced on them ... at least they eat three times as much as they did before, and they get better clothes, shelters, and healthcare (compared to the average peasant life). Cam you imagine being a small girl, and while you are tragically taken away from your family, you are taken into a world where everybody looks richer than the richest person in your neighborhood, and you are given more food than your family could ever afford? It was a big double edged sword, really. The job itself wasn't fun, or glamorous, or even healthy. STDs were a thing. So, it all depends on one's perspective.
