I've have been interested in this franchise for a while, but where is a good place to start?

Personally, I started with the Horus Heresy novels, but I would also recommend Dan Abnet's "Gaunt's Ghosts" series and Sandy Mitchel's "Ciaphas Cain" novels.
Then again, you also can't go wrong with just picking a book with a cover that appeals to you...I play the Space Wolves on the tabletop largely because of William King's Space Wolf novels, and I just picked those because the omnibus cover looked awesome (the story didn't disappoint).
