Walk into any games workshop and they'll get you started with exactly what you need. The people there are expertly trained in draining your expendable income.

Agreed. Space wolf omnibus is great. The grey knights one is intense too, more on the demon side. But a good way for a lot of people to learn is the dawn of war rts series. Of course spacemarine on console is pretty accurate

Personally, I started with the Horus Heresy novels, but I would also recommend Dan Abnet's "Gaunt's Ghosts" series and Sandy Mitchel's "Ciaphas Cain" novels.
Then again, you also can't go wrong with just picking a book with a cover that appeals to you...I play the Space Wolves on the tabletop largely because of William King's Space Wolf novels, and I just picked those because the omnibus cover looked awesome (the story didn't disappoint).
