As the kind gentleman posting that fantastic link has pointed out, "Our Spiritual Liege" has ruined them....well, that and they're a bunch of self-righteous bastards.

People call them mary sue marines, they get a lot of backlash because of the way Ward writes their fluff. Pretty much a "Every other chapter, try as they might, will never be as good as the Ultramarines." They also have a pretty good if expensive named Chapter Master, not nearly as rage-inspired cheese as say Kaldor Draigo or Abbadon the Despoiler.

The rest is just anti-Ward fanboying sadly.

from what I know, they are Matt Wards favorite race, and as a general rule of Warhammer 40k thumb, you have to hate Matt Ward. I think he made them overpowered or something like that, I'm not an expert haha

NECRONS. **** marines. get necrons. We NEVER ******* DIE. and best of all are the deep strike rules for the Monolith, if you deep strike it directly atop your enemys army right at the start, you dont die for landing ontop of enemys, but they just get pushed out of the way so you can land, and you know what then? deploy your ****, and make it rain with the blood of your foes.

necrons are not that new user friendly, they are better than they used to be but still for beginners I recommend Imperial Guard, Vanilla Space Marines, Orks, Tyranids and Tau

You could try eBay, Games Workshop [online or the actual store] or a local hobby shop.

www.games-workshop.com/gws/storelocator/search.jsp
Just put in where you live, and it should give you stores that carry WH40k stuff. It's good to call the store before you leave just to make sure they have the stuff, and that it's at the advertised location.

I would honestly advice not ordering off the Games Workshop website. It takes anywhere from 2-4 weeks to get most shipments in. Amazon or websites that offer discounts are probably the best bet to go if you don't want to camp ebay and do some sniping, since GW's prices can be pretty steep for someone starting up the hobby.

If i can recomend a race Black Templars, get thier own rules, also read thier lure kinda the only truley loyal chapters to the emporer, no psykers so **** that coruption crap, and scouts as apart of thier squads so a lil wiggle room if they get fraged by an explostion. The big draw back is having to know thier special rules

more space marines... well miniwargaming has weekly sales might wanna check them out. as for starting out depends on what chapter, I recommend vanilla (mind they will be getting an update soon) two ten man tactical squads with a missile launcher (take or leave the flamer just don't take the guns that aren't free) (in rhino's if you have the cash) a generic captain with terminator armor, a 5-10 man terminator squad (thunder hammer storm shield) and a fully tooled out predator. that should get you heading in the right direction.

oh remember the biggest mistake new players make is buying to many different kinds of units and then your army will be taken as a piece meal by more experienced players

One must play Orks. Any Ork player can tell you how stupidly fun they are, while still being effective. Also there are SO MANY ways to play them! Orks for the win.

i have also been looking into getting into 40k? but where do i start i looked at the current box set (chaos vs dark angles) and i dont think it looks very fun i was thinking assault on black forge would be more fun but it costs like 200$, i also dont have any idea what kinda army i want (probably space marines) but i dont know where to start, and the painting is what interests me more, i kinda just wanna paint like 1 generic space marine from each chapter and decide from there

Don't you mean black reach?
Anyways, if you want to simply paint a few space marines it'll probably be a better idea to buy the starter set that comes with a few paints, a brush, and five space marines models.
OR
Just the paint starter set and a box of space marines. (this will cost more money)
Also if you literally meant painting all of the space marines chapters its gonna take a really damn long time. (theres tons of space marine chapters).

I reccomend Salamanders chapter as you can field Vulkan He'Stan as your HQ choice, and he is amazing, as he carries three of the five found items of Vulkan. They are also easier to paint for sergeants as there skin is pitch black and eyes are red. They also like to field a lot of flamers.
