My last post was met with...unexpected pleasantness from the community. Particularly considering my intention for posting here was to have a backup somewhere since my computer's about to crap out on me. So thanks!

Anyways, here's the rest of my commission from a few months ago, along with a couple more tidbits from my inquisitorial squad. Not my favorite work here, but it's all the pics I have for now. Anything from here on will be brand spanking new.

Here's one I painted a few years ago, its a limited edition Malus Darkblade on foot. It cost me over $100 unpainted and unassembled so naturally its my favourite. They orange effect on one side is supposed to be the glow effect from the runes on the sword which you can't see at that angle. The character Malus Darkblade has a demon inside him and the demon takes over when he fights and he gets blackened veins which you can see on his face.
#8 to #7 - manollette [OP](01/28/2015) [-]
Looks good. Digging the paneling effect on the base. Wish I could see the runes though. Unless I'm losing my mind though, $100 seems a tad steep for a model that size.
#9 to #8 - turkeyslapper (01/28/2015) [-]
You know how it is, I just had to have it so I kept bidding lol. I read the GW book series about this character so that's why I wanted it. The base is a 3rd party base from 'Back 2 base-ix' they make awesome bases and they're cheap.
#10 to #9 - manollette [OP](01/28/2015) [-]
Yeah, I certainly know how it is. Lost an auction for a sizeable tyranid force to a resale business lately Wish I would've stuck with it. Very nice though. Should try a brown wash followed by a light, green drybrush over the cloak. Really make the scales pop. If you're using citadel, warpstone would be a pretty good, constrasting green. Something closer to straken or elysian if you want the color to be more subtle.
#11 to #10 - turkeyslapper (01/28/2015) [-]
Yeh the cloak looks a bit flat in that light. I don't plan to alter it since its already clear-coated. The matte clear coating also tends to make the colours a bit more muted. I'm not really a fan of dry brushing since it tends to look messy, here the scales are highlighted individually to create the look of shadows in the folds. Painted any non-GW minis?
#13 to #11 - manollette [OP](01/28/2015) [-]
And yeah, I imagine it would be difficult to paint over a coating. Inclined to disagree on the drybrush part though. You might be right for the scales, but for the most part I've found that it gives models a more natural look than highlighting. Heck, half of the model guns I do any more are just black with a boltgun metal drybrush, followed by a runefang highlight on the barrel & decals.
#12 to #11 - manollette [OP](01/28/2015) [-]
Not yet, no. Every now and then I'll throw up an ad on CL with an offer to paint other models for basically the cost of supplies. So far the only takers on that have been warhammer or 40k.
User avatar #14 to #12 - turkeyslapper (01/28/2015) [-]
Ah yeh, I never painted comissions cuz the pay is so low so I just painted for fun. Some good manufacturers: Reaper, Privateer press, Rackham, Freebooter, Hasslefree, Avatars of war, gamezone.
#15 to #14 - manollette [OP](01/28/2015) [-]
Only really heard of privateer press. Sticking with one game for now, might expand in the future. And yeah, I don't really do it for the pay; it's partly for fun, and partly for experience painting different stuff. If I can get really good, I can get to the point where I might actually get paid a decent sum for commissions.
User avatar #16 to #15 - turkeyslapper (01/28/2015) [-]
That's cool man, I just paint whatever I like from any game. There's a lot of crazy good painters out there and to be honest, they don't get paid a lot for the amount of time they put in this mini is crazy good but hes only gonna get $120 if someone "buys it now" www.ebay.com/itm/Sun-Tze-Infinity-Pro-Painted-/151568700281?rmvSB=true . I don't mean to put you off but there's only so much people are willing to pay for a mini no matter how good it is. But if you win a golden demon, well then maybe you can score big. Check out www.coolminiornot.com its the best minis website on the net.
#17 to #16 - manollette [OP](01/28/2015) [-]
Yeah, I've seen most of 'em. I'm not counting on winning a golden daemon, or even getting that good. There will always be people locally who have that special model they want souped up real nice for their games, and I don't need a lot of money to do it; it's as much for enjoyment as it is for anything.

Really nice use of purple, I never seem to use it well
User avatar #56 to #46 - turkeyslapper (01/29/2015) [-]
Cheers, what trouble do you have? It was a while ago but i think i did hormagent purple as the base, then mix a bit of lich purple with the hormagent and paint the raised bits and leave hormagent in the shadowed areas thin the paint with water so its the consitency of milk and do gradual layers. The brightest areas were pure lich purple. Theres no need to lighten the purple on the most raised parts since you want them to be the 'true colour' of the cloth and darker parts are shadows.

IT'S ALL JUST DIRTY RUMORS!!!!

But honestly just dont play by 9th if it the cluster people expect it to be

Why would you even have chaos marauders on horseback, theyre more expensive points wise and still no better than wet tissue, unless youre using them to tarpit, even then regualr ol marauders would do. Or invest the points into more warriors. git gud skrub
#32 to #29 - manollette [OP](01/29/2015) [-]
I don't play fantasy. If you read the text, it's part of a commission for another guy.
#37 to #29 - ellasmjer (01/29/2015) [-]
liking models is reason enough to use them. how they will function with other aspects of the army is something one must find out.

Thanks! I'm almost done with my SM army, so will have some more pics to post within the next week or so. They should be up to a bit higher of a standard.

I miss working on warhammer, but I just simply can't afford it anymore.

My plague furnace was probably my proudest work.

Good **** dog.
This is my best piece.
#43 to #42 - manollette [OP](01/29/2015) [-]
Nice. Loving the wings. Never been brave enough to really do a lot of gold like that, myself. Always ends up coming out weird. Probably why I haven't done any chaos or horus heresy stuff yet.
#45 to #43 - tmstyrant (01/29/2015) [-]
It's just a three wash

I really need a airbrush, getting real tired of doing it by hand.

Dis be my Dante
#48 to #45 - manollette [OP](01/29/2015) [-]
Yeah, definitely looking sharp. I've been trying to get into airbrushing too. Got a Badger Patriot 105 and an Eclipse HP-CS. Both seem great for basecoating and broad work, but it splatters a lot when you try to get detail work done...I'm looking at an Iwata TRN2 now, since it works on lower air pressure, but I'm starting to lose hope at airbrushing detail work.
User avatar #49 to #48 - tmstyrant (01/29/2015) [-]
Oh you cant airbrush most detail work man, got to break out the brushes if you want to do a good job. It's great for doing base coats.
#51 to #49 - manollette [OP](01/29/2015) [-]
I have noticed that much, at least. I've seen some absolutely amazing airbrush work over at awakenrealms.com/gallery though, and I'm very much jealous, Would kill to be able to do that, but yeah - every time I try, it's just splatter, splatter, splatter.
User avatar #52 to #51 - tmstyrant (01/29/2015) [-]
yeah those are beautiful, takes a lot of skill, you got to cover them parts when you airbrush obviously. Where do you live? The humidity can make it hard to airbrush
#53 to #52 - manollette [OP](01/29/2015) [-]
Live in Washington, but the humidity's not too bad. I'll keep practicing. Did a carnifex with nothing but an airbrush and it came out....well, it didn't come out. It's an abomination that wouldn't even be fit to accompany Nurgle into battle.
User avatar #54 to #53 - tmstyrant (01/29/2015) [-]
lol, just do the basecoat with the airbrush, then use brushes for every thing else. Those big models are useful to use the airbrush on
#40 - anon (01/29/2015) [-]
**** , I used to be into warhammer 40k (and I still like it) but it's so goddamn expensive as a hobby (but if you're willing to pay the price,, all the more power to you).
#41 to #40 - manollette [OP](01/29/2015) [-]
I've actually bought nearly all of my stuff second-hand so far. I've got about 150 infantry and 30 vehicle models for my IG (including 3 valkyries), all with magnetized bases, and weapon options on the vehicles. Snagged the bunch for $400 on Craigslist. If I ever decide to get out of the hobby, I'm making a profit, baby ;-)
User avatar #33 - bakinboy (01/29/2015) [-]
really good, only ones that look off are the 2nd and 3rd faces.
also you might want to use stencils for custom designs like what appears to be the red ring of death on the 1st pic.
seriously though. your painting looks exactly like the illustrations. keep it up
#34 to #33 - manollette [OP](01/29/2015) [-]
Thanks! I've really considered trying to use stencils, particularly for some of my tanks. The smaller stuff like this I don't mind free handing, since the screw ups are hard to spot unless you really look closely at it. Any recommendations as far as those go? Have never really delved into 'em.
User avatar #35 to #34 - bakinboy (01/29/2015) [-]
ive never used stencils that small so i couldnt really tell you much on that.
as for freehand i would say you might want to get a pinstriping brush

I'll look into it, thanks!

Here's a Harbinger of Despair Cryptek conversion from a Cairn Wraith. I hear they're not in the new Codex, but Veil of Darkness is, so I guess I'll still use my spooky skelly.
#38 to #28 - ellasmjer (01/29/2015) [-]
crypteks are in and have 2 wounds now, dont know if harbinger of despair is in, the codex leaks didnt show.
User avatar #59 to #38 - captainwow (01/29/2015) [-]
Yeah I'm so happy Crypteks and Lords are 2 W, if the online leaks are true this book looks awesome. They just changed the way Crypteks can be upgraded, which is disappointing since they had phenomenal wargear, but as a unit, they really got better.
#60 to #59 - ellasmjer (01/29/2015) [-]

User avatar #61 to #60 - captainwow (01/30/2015) [-]
Url deleted, but I appreciate the gesture. I've read a ton of leaks, so far I'm also really excited about Destroyers becoming jet pack and 2W (finally)

#64 to #63 - ellasmjer (01/30/2015) [-]
baaahhh in any case i think the changes i have seen so far are AMAZING. basicly no more "go-to flyer win list" kind of deal and most things made really solid in terms of stats and points but not outright broken
User avatar #65 to #64 - captainwow (01/30/2015) [-]
Yah it's shaping up to be beautiful. Nerfs to flyers means I don't have to go out and buy 6 of those flying croissants. Plus gauss now glancing AND wounding on a 6, makes me happy I decided to start Crons
#66 to #65 - ellasmjer (01/30/2015) [-]
goddamn croissants. i have not seen the stats for doomsday ark gun yet tho and was wondering if you saw the stats for it anywhere?
#67 to #66 - captainwow (01/30/2015) [-]
I'm like 90% sure Doomsday Ark got better, if it moved I think it's 24" S8 AP 3 Heavy, blast, if it was stationary S10 AP1 large blast. Think there's also a formation that allows the Doomsday Ark to steal a nearby Annihilation Barge's Quantum Shielding if it loses its own
#68 to #67 - ellasmjer (01/30/2015) [-]
i assume the stationary profile has longer range?
User avatar #69 to #68 - captainwow (01/30/2015) [-]
I think it's 72". I read off a forum where someone who said they had the new book was reading rules from it, seemed about right. It's all speculation until we have the new book in our hands, of course

#21 to #20 - manollette [OP](01/28/2015) [-]
I know; like I said, these are some of my much older work. Have painted about 150 models since.
#22 to #21 - salai (01/28/2015) [-]
well i'll go ahead and post some of my stuff
my first try with pigments
#24 to #23 - manollette [OP](01/28/2015) [-]
That looks awesome...normally I'd suggest a stronger focus on the highlights, but the way it's done really works for the whole, rusty, grimy, nurgle-y look. Love it.
User avatar #25 to #24 - salai (01/28/2015) [-]
there's even a small backstory to that tank
bought it second hand for like 10€, the previous owner seemed to be some kid who used the TANK so test his color sceme (used to be red with white scribbles) but it looked like he primed the modell in red anti-rust coating.
well long story short i made it my project of 2014, took me about 3 half days to fix it, do fix it (lost parts), convert it and paint it (hard to see in the pic but since the previous paint hurt the modell so much the armored parts got a interesting texture, was a blast to drybrush it in like 10 different colors)
i'll post more of my stuff if you like (noit eversthing is 40K) but not until i got more natural light, photos in the dark suck
