not sure even the 40k fans will get this one, let me help.
the standard Lasgun uses the same basic technology and operates along the same lines as other laser weapons, emitting a beam of highly-energetic, focused, coherent photons.
in other words its a powerful flashlight. hence the joke. compared to just about anything else in the 40k universe they are pathetic, so they are commonly addressed as flashlights.

that's kinda common knowledge that imperial guard members only use flashlights and second hand airsoft guns

True, but from a sheer logistical standpoint, it really does make sense. Ship a battery that can be recharged through a vast number of methods, or a box of bullets which are gone once fired. (Don't expect a soldier to stop and play with gunpowder and a reloading bench either, kinda silly.)

Plus, lets face it, an autorifle is not much more powerful, and a standard bolter is heavy and unwieldy even in a strong mans hands. It takes great levels of training, strength, and fortitude to be able to use a bolter. A lasrifle is simple, requires little training or maintenance, and is cheap. Besides, in an Empire so vast that a trillion deaths is trivial... well...

And no, I have no idea why I went off on a tangent on a post five months old. Have a Commissar Ciaphas Cain as an apology,

Pretty sure if they are a 40k fan they should get it, since in almost all 40k groups the lasguns are nicknamed flashlights, especially if you play tabletop.

well i guess im talking more to the new 40k fans who have played some of the DOWs only as spehss marheens and have only read little about SM lore. believe me, on some of the comment sections on 40k posts, even anything remotely involving 40k usually ends up with a bunch of people posting a bunch of SM pictures and saying heresy. I was there once.

Against an unarmored target, a lasrifle shot is roughly equivalent to firing a lightsaber. At the same time, firing a boltgun shot at the same target will turn the target into red paste.
