I don't think so buddy

they trained daily to wear it. it was more like a second skin not a burden.

www.medieval-life.net/knight_training.htm

just found it by poking around but training from age 7 to possibly 18 . . . that's a lot of time to just become a knight while doing knightly things. that was the most advanced combat at the time everyone who planned to use it effectively would have had to be proficient in its function.

You can't just "clean off" scratches from swords, or dents from blunt weapons. You can't always clean off evidence that your armor has weathered the elements.

There's only so much a rag can do.

Armour that's not shiny is rusting, any knight with half a brain will keep his armour from rusting
#78 to #73 - charak (11/06/2015) [-]
Just because metal is not shiny, doesn't mean it's rusting. Oil coating and other methods keep steel from rusting and do not shine.
#79 to #78 - skutter (11/06/2015) [-]
Based on historical armour of the medieval ages, how often do you see darkened, or treated armour. I've yet to see any. Based on the technology of the time it is more than likely all they had access to would have been mild steel. Which has a tendency to rust
User avatar #83 to #79 - charak (11/07/2015) [-]
A lot of medieval armor was most likely painted to prevent rusting.
besides that Blacksmiths DID used oil treat metal.
another thing they used to do was "blue" the armor, look it up, it blackened the armor.
#85 to #83 - skutter (11/07/2015) [-]
I'm speaking as someone who has some experience blacksmithing and treating metal. Oiling yes. I won't deny that they did that, and oiling does help prevent rust. But it doesn't stop the rust in its entirety. If your armour gets wet, it will have some rust which will have to be cleaned off. As for the "Blueing" That's just the colour of the metal changing due to the heat it is exposed to, it's to treat the metal to become harder, not to prevent rust.
User avatar #87 to #85 - charak (11/07/2015) [-]
im just arguing that the statement "if its not shiny its rusting" is just plain wrong.
#88 to #87 - skutter (11/07/2015) [-]
I was referring to polished steel, as that was what most plate mail was made from

First one is false OP.
People in medieval times especially noblemen took great pride in their clothing.
They always had their clothes washed and armor shined.
Having dirty clothes/rusty armor would be like being a peasant.

Source: Im a loser who has nothing to do so i study medieval things
User avatar #99 to #29 - severepwner (11/07/2015) [-]
I think it's more referring to armor that looks like it's fresh out of the forge.

Armor out of battle can suffer (not necessarily permanent but difficult to reverse) damage to it, that's not easily cleaned. Scratches and dents for instance, and I'm sure many wear those scars as badges of honor.

Also, if you're out at war for a long time, eventually having sparkling clean armor eventually feels tedious and pointless when the only people you're impressing are fellow soldiers dirtier than you, and the enemy you intend to kill.

"I'll clean my armor when I go home."

Not really, but they both have similar etymology.
User avatar #45 to #42 - nustix (11/06/2015) [-]
You can place both in this sentence and it still makes sense. In the metaphorical way meaning that he hasn't had his mettle tested and that is the reason he is in shining armor. Or in the literal sense that his armor is still shining because it never had to endure anything.
#47 to #7 - Skwurll (11/06/2015) [-]

Yes, im sure the god of blood cares for clean armour.

just imagining slaanesh looking at me with dissapointment after I have slain an army then saying "your armour is dirty". And walking away
User avatar #147 to #145 - captainprincess ONLINE (11/07/2015) [-]
Sure he does

He wants you bathed in so much blood of conquest it stains your armor blood red and shines with the deaths of your fallen foes

Not crusty and dirty and just shabby looking

could totally imagine my prince doing that though
I keep my **** nicely polished it looks good enough to lick
#40 to #28 - tacticalbacon (11/06/2015) [-]
I think it more refers to the dents and cuts that can happen to armor, or maybe that people who have seen the battle just don't care anymore.
User avatar #92 to #40 - captainprincess ONLINE (11/07/2015) [-]
I mean maybe

But also
dented and cut armor can still shine if you look after it

and I mean that literally and to keep with the metaphor

When a knight's armor gets damaged, it gets fixed. If it's "shining" armor, it is most likely a knight who is also connected to the royal family or Kings Guard. They are usually the best of the best and get nice shiny armor because they need to look good in the castle.
