I highyl doubt they WOULDN'T finish those stories. They're at another element of suprise and story to season 3. They probably wanted to hold off for that reason, more material for season 3.

If we go by the comics, Daryl's brother does not exist, shane dies like at the beggining of the plot, they don't go to the CDC, and walkers are treated as "zombies" and "roamers".

In the comic Rick finds them, the son gets bit, it looks like th dad kills him, bt he only shot the chain around his ankle so that he could walk freely in the house as a zommbie

If you want to know, they eventually find him, his son a zombie, he is keeping his son chained up and is feeding, rick tells him to let his son go and then he join the group
