Actually, the civil war was fought over state's rights. Slavery was just a main focus that teachers like to tell little kids in grade school.

Meehhhh, yes and no. It was about State's rights that boiled down to economics and what states could do. The south wanted the right to hold slaves (the basis of their economy) and didn't want the north telling them what to do. The north would rather go to war than break the union, so they forced the south to remain part of the union and to give up their slaves. So, you're right, it was about state rights, but those rights largely involved slaves.
American textbooks are scarily biased. If you want an interesting read about textbook control read James Loewen's "everything my teacher taught me is a lie". Great historiography.
