How 'bout, you start as a human, and if you take on too much radiation, you have a 50% chance of becoming one of them.

I think super mutant would be hard to pull off, both story and equipment-wise, seeing as youd be freaking uge and everyone automatically hates you. Ghoul would be feasible though. Maybe add in cyborgs or synthetics like Harkness in 3 instead of super mutants.

It wouldn't You need to login to view this link you know, every fallout game starts with main character leaving the vault.If you'd have other race other than human, it wouldn't make sense that you're leaving the vault, because the whole point of vault is not to be a mutant.

what would be good

continuous high rad exposure- transform into a ghoul
pros- healed by radiation, ghoul only quest lines and dialogues
cons- shunned by certain factions some followers may refuse to join you or may even try to kill you

the option to infect your self with the FEV virus
pros- huge radiation resistance, STR and END increases, mutant quest lines, lead mutant forces against human settlements, possible to tame a cenatuar
cons- all humans and ghouls are hostile- no followers- INT decrease

would be pretty ****** slick

yea scratch super mutants, wouldnt work. Would be stupid if all armour fitted humans and mutants but equally annoying if 1/3rd of the armour you find is useless.7

Replace it with something else maybe half bionic man or something like that? Plus you could do the Elder scrolls type of things and make different 'races' like asian, black etc.

They have strong skin and can only get armor from crafting or stealing other super mutant armor. and of course clothers you mother wears would also fit.

So....my take on how it would work? posting one comment at a time

Super Mutants: strength and endurance have a cap at 20 instead of 10 and have a minimum value of 7, intelligence and perception cap at 3. For skills anything related to beating a mother ****** to death with another mother ****** starts with a 5-10 point bump regardless of how you allocate your 'Special" points and you have the initial perk of being immune to rads but any armor or certain weapons become unusable by you unless you take the time to buff out your repair skill or take them to a craftsman to have them modified for your immense size, (seriously, how did they fit their sausage fingers into the trigger guards in fallout3?) And lastly due to your immense size and constitution, chems will only have a 50% effect when used and only last 2/3rds the time they normally would (they can however stack i.e. Take 2 doses to get the same effect that it would normally do, stim packs also have a much lessened effect, but food and drink still heal as they normally would. This is to compensate for the huge bump that super mutants would have in their health and damage resistance based on their massive size strength and their thick leathery skin.
