Age don't mean **** when it comes to survival!

That's something that nobody seems to think about when it comes to zombie apocalypse scenarios. Not even Max Brooks:
What about nuclear power plants? If they are not being looked after that usually means that their cooling systems will fail quite soon after, resulting in worldwide MCAs. Some of the reactors will just melt down into their collecting shells, but most of them will explode. That would result in a massive radiation of the whole planet, huge quantities of radioactive particles being dispersed in the atmosphere, leading to a drop in temperatures around the globe, that will be filled with radiating zombies.
With their density of nuclear plants especially Russia, the US and France would be highly radiated zones, making survival even harder or rather futile.

Or am I completely wrong with this theory?

Okay, There are like 15 different types of Fission reactor currently in use around the world, but they all have some basics in common. I'm gonna be talking about closed circuit pressurized light water reactors here because they are the most common.

So, worst case scenario here, like no one is there to take care of the reactor, all people are suddenly gone.

NPPs have automated fail safe systems to keep the reactor cores from overheating.
The systems slow the reactions to as low a level as possible, to keep the cores cool, but it still needs plenty of high pressure water circulating around it to keep it from overheating. The automated systems may have enough power to keep it cooled for about a week but then the fuel rod will overheat and meld down into a liquid mess which will react violently and heat up to insane temperatures. This will likely burn a hole though the 3 foot thick steel pressure vessel, If this is still pressurized (which it shouldn't be in case of a melt down, there are systems in place to prevent this) vast amounts of radioactive steam will explode out of the reactor and blow out the whole building. If it's a new building it has a thick concrete lining which will contain the radiative particles, but if it's an old one it might blow out the roof and spread radioactive fallout in the wind.

This is however pretty unlikely, and here is a more likely scenario.
**** goes down, and people realize the NPPs are a potential danger.
The military stations guards there as technicians start powering down the reactor.
It takes about a week to power it down and take the fuel rods out.
The rods are stored in a pool of water and are left to cool off.

I would prefer a zombie apocalypse to a nuclear one any day.

At least water and food sources wouldn't be affected as much as in a nuclear apocalypse.

I hate how Zombie Apocalypse scenarios (Either in Films, TV shows, or video games) ignore food scavenging as one of the main priorities.
Water would be easy enough to acquire (Assuming you don't live in a desert and have fresh water steams and lochs in your country)
Fuel could be acquired from gas pumps as usual, if they've been drained, then abandoned cars would have some (Assuming it doesn't dry up)
Armour, weapons etc would all be easily to loot from local shops. (Even if it is only a kitchen knife and t-shirt).

Food would be in abundance for the first few weeks, but once it starts to pass itself by date, it could make it harder for you by risking food poisoning.

Yes, I over think things, i have next to no social life.

It's not zombies, it's mushroom people.

The Last of Us isn't really a zombie apocalypse. They're not the living dead. It's more like a fungus that makes you go mad.

it bugs me when movies set in the future only go as high as the year 2000-something. can't they imagine humanity in the year 75,550???! the year 3 million??!! FFUUUUUUUUUUUU

It's not "nuclear fallout in Russia", it's "nuclear fallout everywhere", read the books.
#211 to #181 - thahobomaster (06/23/2013) [-]
Yea but doesn't the story take place in Russia? Not like OP specified whether only in Russia and not the rest of the world.

Besides, OP was talking about the connection of the years. According to your interpretation, why would a zombie apocalypse located ONLY in the U.S. have to resort to nuking Russia, causing fallout ONLY in Russia?

Either way, it can be interpreted that the zombie apocalypse and fallout have something in common GLOBALLY.

But then again, that's not the important part. It's the years.

I'll stop being a salty asshole now, good day.

You know what really grinds my gears? The people who claim fast zombies(or infected who can take multiple gun shots) are not in fact zombies. Monsters have evolved through the ages to represent and keep up with human fears and social problems of the day. Back 80 years ago vampires were not sexy or hot or something you could empathize with(and they certainly didn't sparkle). No they were horrible disfigured undead monsters who hypnotized people and fed on them, but thanks to social changes and the media an ugly animal vampire is now a minority. The same changes have affected zombies today, and the fast zombie are here to stay. Better start running.
