1-8: Means nothing
9-10: The developers probably payed the reviewers.
Of course there are always exceptions but you should always try to look at consumer reviews over professional ones.
I'd also disagree. I've never played games based on peoples opinions for a couple of reasons. I find most people are idiots, few can argue with that. Game reviewers who make it their job to review games only seem to give the highest scores to the biggest titles, so I agree devs probably paid for a good review, and I won't put anything past EA. But my main reason is several people like to find things to nit pick. They point one thing out and they don't get off of it. And when you actually play the game, you're going to be thinking about that one bad review, and that one thing that they didn't like and it might just ruin it for you.
TL;DR I don't like consumer reviews either. People are idiots. I play games because they look like they'd be fun and I generally enjoy them.
I agree about that, some reviews have good points but are overly harsh on it, recently looked up some old games of mine on IGN and I was rather disturbed with the result
dont ever use IGN. I've always liked "Rock, paper, shotgun" It seems to be very few bias, and they dont really use "scoring" theynjust review the game forwhat it is, including problems and flaws. Of course, there are different reviewers with different views and whatnot.
honestly when looking for games I don;t use reviews
I tend to go along the lines of "that looks good & I have money for one lets get it --> FE Awakening / Bioshock Infinite / Luigi's Mansion (surprisingly awesome multiplayer btw)
If i'm actually unsure about a tittle, I just ask a couple of friends + Gamestop people, rl advice tends to be actually reliable proving you give the masses a wide berth
gamestop people tend to.... you know... game stop. I never buy games purely based off of "hey he says good let buy" but its definetly a good thing to read a review or something, especially a trusted one, which honestly, rock paper shotgun hasnt let me down. And its not just reviewing games, its other stuff as well.
Ah to clarify, I don't buy off what they say, I get some info from them, in retrospect thou I do know my gamestop people fairly well, to the point where I will actually trust their advice, but that's just what comes from working 2 stores to the right of them in a mall I guess
Well if they are it doesn't matter, cause its not helping them
For example. ask gamestop some question about getting a 3ds, get some good advice in terms of pros / conns of XL / regular , then being the scumbag that i am I give the profit to best buy a week later
Yeah like, I loved the **** out of Amnesia. I beat it in one sitting, so I only had to **** in one pair of pants. Later on for the hell of it, read some reviews. Someone gave it a poor review. So I'm like, whatever you're entitled to your opinion and probably an idiot. He bitched about the game being far too repetitive. To him the game was, solve puzzle, hide from monster, find next puzzle. Solve puzzle, hide from monster, find next puzzle. So thinking about it, sure it really WAS that repetitive, but I didn't notice because I was too busy having fun.
Or better yet, forget reviews all together. Look at the basic structure, ideas, and plot of a game before it comes out and make your decision based off that, almost never has a review dictated if I should get a game and I've bought very few games that I didn't thoroughly enjoy.
I disagree. A lot of consumer reviews are biased and all they say is. It is a pc game now its a console game so I don't like it or. Because this is a rpg and I like first person shooters this is a bad game. For overall ratings look at Professional reviews. For individual comments shift through the consumer reviews.
I must say that it's one of the reasons I prefer consumer reviews (as long as they're at least somewhat comprehensive and not "THIS SUX! I hate it and it's a loozer gaem!"). You see where people are coming from - if a person doesn't play, say, racing games and tries one, he'll see different pros and cons of the game. I'm not saying that you should just follow one of two user comments, I find it helps to build a more accurate picture on whether or not you'd enjoy the game.
I do absolutely agree that some people just play a game to hate it. Like some sort of mental masturbation - "I will play this genre I don't like on a console I hate and I'll make sure to tell the world about my anguish!". That's as ******** as you can get. But you can usually pretty easily distinguish between actual reviews and that type of "PC/PS/XBOX Master race" rants. For example, even though I'm a PC-only gamer (mostly because I find controllers a lot more annoying to play with), I'd still give Dark Souls a great review. I didn't get deep into the game because of the terrible port, but it otherwise looked like an extremely interesting game and story.
unfortunately its true with alot of game companies this day in age... remember when games were just so good they didnt need to pay for a good review? like power stone, megaman legends, crash bandicoot, and countless others? it just shows how much little work they wanna do for alot of money.... its just lazy of them and they are ripping off their fans... i wanna create a game company that gives you bang for your buck for instance one of the policys for the company i want to make is " if the dlc has less than 10 maps its free " because then i will always be setting a goal with every game... i want to **** pack my games with content but not too much just so the player doesnt feel like he got ripped off when he bought the game brand new "cough" gow judgement "cough" crapcom "cough"
Wow, some people are real total and utter faggots. Why thumb me down because i did not know something? DID YOU PEOPLE ALWAYS ******* KNOW EVERYTHING SINCE THE DAWN OF TIME?
Yahtzee is all over the damn place, and Joe I feel can sometimes jump on the band wagon to pander to his viewers, especially when it comes to ultra hyped titles like Skyrim and Bioshock Infinite. But they're both entertaining and pretty honest for the most part.
i know yahtzee isnt technically a reviewer as he's a critic, but i dont see that as a bad thing, like he once said "how else will game developers learn?".
think about all the people here when you say you like a game that is for some reason popular to hate and whine about because of irrelevant reasons that has nothing to do with the game and the so-called problems that are easily solvable by just adjusting something on the game settings.
...WTF did Canada ever do? We developed Assassins Creed, Bioshock, Dante's Inferno, Dead Rising 2, most of the Farcry games, Mass Effect, Max Payne, Need For Speed, most of Tom Clancy's game titles, SWKOTOR, and not to mention the next Batman Arkham game.
most of the games "you" developed belongs to american, french or some asian companies... not one canadian is there.
just because a canadian studio of a big company had some part of making a game it does not make it "canadian made"... that's like saying BMW is asian because it's made there or Mercedes and Audio is hungarian because they are made there... no they are German no matter where they make it
deadpool is also made by americans and owned by an american company.... so not canadian, same with wolverine
Bioshock? REALLY? YOU JUST WENT THERE?!
Original Bioshock: 2kBoston, (which is, I think, in Boston), 2kMarine (in California), and 2kAsutralia (probably in Australia)
you have no idea how much I hate you for this prophanity

Corrections: Canadians didn't make Bioshock. Digital Extremes only ported it to PS3 a year after it originally came out. Also, didn't make Dante's Inferno. The Dead Space guys made that. Canadians also only made Max Payne 3, but not 1 and 2. But the rest is all made by Canadians. :P
Well I like Canada. Nice people, wonderful landscape etc.
BUT ONE ******* THING
WHY THE HELL DO YOU SPEAK FRENCH? I MEAN IS THERE ANOTHER GODDAMN LANGUAGE THAT CAN MAKE YOUR RAGE SO HARD WHEN YOU TRY TO LEARN IT?
ITS ALL ABOUT PUTTING STUPID LINES AND DOTS OVER LETTERS TO SAY **** YOU PEOPLE WHO WANT TO LEARN THIS **** .
LOOK AT ENGLISH. ITS EASY TO LEARN OR TO SPEAK AND SOUNDS OKAY.
LOOK AT FRENCH. YOU NEED A ******* LIFETIME DOSE OF RITALIN TO MAKE UP THE EFFORT TO LEARN THIS **** LANGUAGE AND THEN ITS NOT EVEN A NICE ONE! EVER WORD YOU SAY IN FRENCH SOUNDS LIKE "AFTERWARDS I TAKE YOU FROM BEHIND AND CUM IN YOUR CROISSANT"
actually English, in comparison to almost every other language, is one of the most complex languages in the world, nous parle Francais par ce que nous etions habitee comme tous les deux England et France.
When I was younger in my teens I always found the review itself more interesting than the actual score.
I don't think all kids are ignorant in that regard, I think this is more a universal problem across all ages.
Yeah. People take the actual score too seriously as if there's some objectively right number for every game to be judged upon.
I actually wrote an article on ScrewAttack a while back discussing why review scores are bad for the industry: www.screwattack.com/news/why-review-scores-are-irrelevant
Could you at least give opinions on to why you hate them?
I don't dislike bioshock i've never been interested, i played the first one for about 10 minutes and never got back into it.
The GTA series i do like although, the story lines are generally pretty good same with the missions to, there is also pretty decent multiplayer now days and a lot of stuff to do when the game is completed.
and COD i don't terribly like, i got sick of it after they just repeated everything again and again, making a new game every year just for money.
Agreed. I find that Treyarch is at least willing to try new things, but Infinity Ward just does a few new guns, a few changes to perks, then sells the game
I thought that the story behind BO2 was on point of what's happening today.
The only Problem with the game is the squeakers (I hit the mute option) and when people make inappropriate emblems.
a lot of things get added in that are based on today, even if its not intentional
I ignore them, usually through muting, and the emblems I don't really pay attention to
Canada also has the longest confirmed kill with a sniper rifle in afghanistan. so not only do our frostback neighbors to the north make awesome shooters, they also do a decent job of shooting...
Or find a trusty reviewer whose opinions match yours, lists all the flaws and all the good points, and go with that? Better than to find out you bought a ******** and wasted your money
Yup, AngryJoe is honest and gives good ratings, but the thing is that he ONLY plays Xbox games. Well, maybe some games like Shogun, but overal he plays Xbox the most, which is not a problem, but for PC-gamers (like myself) that's kinda ****** up, as he wouldn't tell you if the PC-port is bad or not.
Also, his humor in the sketches he puts into the videos aren't really enjoyable for some.
Overall, great guy, does his job CORRECTLY and without biasing, however, could be a letdown when you don't like his humor, and is tended to give a game high ratings when he likes it or has nostalgia/trivia from previous games, or even base ratings on previous games.
I'd say, he is worth a 7,5 and a MOSHTHUN BADASS SEAL OF APPROVAL.
