So I'd like to point out that the Xbox One's former DRM policy was basically what Steam has been doing for years, yet nobody freaks the **** out on them. If anything, we treat Steam as the second coming of Jesus. So I fail to see what was ever wrong with the Xbox One, other than the whole Kinect thing. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think there was an option to turn the Kinect off.
Not even close. Steam did require you to be online...to download the damn thing. Since you need to download it? After you activated it you can be offline for weeks or even months at a time. Steam also has the luxury of mods, great sales and etc, etc.
Also, Steam isn't as much of a big deal as Xbox One's former policy because the whole thing...it's freaking optional! You can go DRM free all as you want with things like GOG.com, Humble Bundle or even just putting a crack on your steam games (Yar Har). The DRM policy had no redeeming qualities, especially for a CONSOLE. Whilst Steam does.
>can't connect to the internet once every 24 hours
A required internet connection means the game has an in-built lifespan. Those servers wont be up forever.
Say the N64 required an internet connection. Nowadays you wouldn't be able to go back and play Goldeneye or Mario 64 or whatever because the servers would've been taken down, making the console and all the games you payed for ******* worthless.
This isn't an issue with Steam, because Steam won't be taken down and replaced with Steam 2, unlike consoles.
Anon I believe you have a point, if you can afford to buy a console, I'm pretty sure you can also afford an internet connection. And I suppose nobody heard of the policy where there was a list of 10 people who you could share your games you bought for the Xbox one with with no limits. I'm sure that's more than a redeeming factor.
The sharing games thing was little more than a glorified demo system.
You could only play a shared game for like 45 minutes, then it made you pay for it:
Of course that could all be lies, but even if it was what everyone thought it was (y'know, a full game sharing system) then there was no need for the console to require an internet connection. They could've just required you to be online to play shared games.
Personally I have a lot of issues with those policies, mainly because they
them upon you as opposed to it simply being an option. I like to have hard-copies of my games. I'd have no problems with the system were it not optional like steam.
The Kinect can be turned off (or, y'know, unplugged or maybe wrapped in a pillow if you're really paranoid) and the sharing policies were freaking great!
However the DRM was awful. Stable connections are all well and good in the EU, US and certain areas of the far-east. But there's a lot of places that DO have active gamers that DON'T have stable connections. These places of course being the majority of the land of the world. (One of which being the middle-east, particularly the contested territories where the overseas troops go. They still get to play games in their downtime just not online because those limited resources need to be spent elsewhere.)
I'm not going to pretend that it will affect me but just because it doesn't affect me doesn't mean I don't care about the people it does affect.
Steam is an extra application that can be downloaded for free and allows you to buy games dirt cheap. The One would cost $500 with a mandatory camera, had no plans for steam equivalent sales, and would be required hardware for any and all media/games/internet etc. Steam also runs on internet you already paid for at no extra cost while Microsoft's console would require a bumped up monthly fee to use the internet you already paid for. There was literally no return for using the Xbox instead of a PC or a playstation.
Yes, while Steam is free, the computer you need to
it and the games you buy with it isn't. The console is pricey to due to having some pretty good hardware under the hood (better than I have) and having the Kinect included (I don't really care about that part, I'm not buying one anyway). Let us not forget that Sony added a monthly subscription as well. We also don't know if Microsoft planned to do any sales like Steam, that was not discussed. And I think it's actually better that the set hardware is a good thing, especially considering it is
hardware, set hardware means that developers have to make the game and optimize it to run at the best it possibly can on the given hardware. I don't plan on buying an Xbox One (or any console for that matter, maybe the Wii U), I just don't think it deserved the fire it got.
(Also, thank you for using that pic, I had to wipe my hard drive and I have been searching for that pic for weeks)
Oh geez, let me correct this one at a time then.
First, you don't buy a computer for steam, steam is an optional luxury if you have one. To repeat why the computer was brought up in my first comment, which you ignored, neither the computer nor steam charge you extra to play games on them. You pay only for the internet, whereas xbox will be charging as much as $20 a month for you to just play games on it (because you can't play games without an internet connection on it, a policy they had to revoke).
Whether you want to buy a kinect or not doesn't matter because it is force bundled with the console, the price is already included so if you buy the console, you bought the kinect,
When asked directly if they would have steam-like sales they refused to comment and the question had to be changed to. "is it possible, could it" in order for them to answer at all. Even now the only time they gave a real sale on xbox was after it bombed horribly in preorders (again, until policies were revoked)
The hardware is ok, but it is less than the ps4 and for $500 you can get a WAY better computer. They are focusing on cloud technology, not hardware.
The Xbox One got flak because it not only wiped out used games entirely (revoked, but undefined restrictions are still in place) but they made their online fees higher and required since the system would nto work if you didn't log in every 24 hours to their gold service. People, especially military men who supported the 360 were very pissed off. When asked about it one of the CEOs actually said that if you don't have a steady internet connection just buy a 360. Microsoft **** in their hands and threw it in the face of loyal xbox users. The backlash from the public forced the to revoke a couple of their policies but this act showed that if given any leeway they will take everything from their customer. Sony hasn't done me wrong since the Playstation so I will support them with my wallet.
only other gif i have of them.
I have to laugh at the irony of your username and the good points that you are making. When I said I wasn't going to buy one the first time, I meant I wasn't planning on buying an Xbox One, really the only thing on my radar is the Wii U. I've used one at my buddy's place and I have to say, if that thing would have had a better initial lineup of games, it would be a much bigger player right now. That thing is the tits, and I think that's something we can all agree on.
shut the **** up!
