i cant seem to do well at this game at all, after month one everything just falls to ****
On my first playthrough my soldier managed to miss a 96% shot, which in turn meant I lost a soldier that was protecting some other guy and in the end I lost everyone in what should've been an easy clear.
Right now I'm at the invade the alien base mission first one, if there's more of them and the whole thing is ridiculous. Lots of Chryssalids, flying robot things and some hulk like monster. I just quit without saving and will try again whenever I get a masochistic streak again.

i had an assault soldier miss a 98% shot, point blank, i was so infuriated
Would you suggest "cheating" by reloading every time I fail to get the mission completed, or just give it up?

Mess around with the "Second Wave" options.
i find turning on 100% critical on a flank highly effective. you just need to be mindful when positioning your own troops. And plan your buildings. Make sure you leave space to make same-type adjacent buildings for that bonus. Also always use the Steam tiles for power.
and anyone planning to play or have played XCOM needs to Download the "Long War" mod. it makes the game soooooooo much better.

are your problem in the battles? getting rekt by the thinmen who have super aim annoying poison?
common newbie mistakes are splitting your troops up too much. the larger your squad is, the more likely you are to be spotted by additional groups of aliens. it also helps you with keeping all your power focused in one place.
it is often worth it to expend item slots and turns to use smoke grenades and flashbangs: they keep your troops alive.
always make your riskiest moves first. chosing which squad member moves first is crucial to success on the battlefield. therefore, you should look at all the moves availible to you before you make any of them.
when one or more enemies go on overwatch, you should ask yourself these questions, in roughly this order: "Can i RELIABLY kill them all in this turn, from my current positions/without triggering the owerwatch?" "can i cancel the overwatch with supression or flashbang?" "can i safely sit still and hunker down without getting flanked, letting them make a mistake/come to me (will i get grenaded/poisoned?)" "can i SAFELY run the owerwatch with a lightning reflexes assault?"
when you are considering running up to flank an enemy, ask yourself these questions first: "have i secured that ground with scans or other vision already?" "can the flankee's buddies flank me on their turn?" "does the flanking soldier have a safe spot to retreat to after going forward?" "can the rest of my squad save my agressive soldier if i activate new enemies?" "will my agressive soldier end up in the way for my back-up grenades/rocket?" "what do i do when i miss/roll low damage?"

The only one I don't got is beating the game on classic without buying a squad size upgrade (enemy within). I've blown through normal dozens of times, often with red mist and ironman activated and my assaults having expensive new plasma rifles before even mechtoids deploy. But my **** keeps getting wrecked the moment I up the difficulty.
The Obvious Answer: Reload saves; this one does not require Ironman
The Perfect Scenario: 2 Squadsight Snipers, A support, and a filler
For this one, you don't want to play as aggressive as you would on others. Just take your time and do the minimum needed to win. EU/EW does not require a time limit, so if you want to force the clock to benefit your difficulty curve, you have all the time in the world.
The best way to start off a classic is to go Africa and claim South America as soon as possible, or go Asia and defend Africa as soon as possible; while saving SA as a luxury. If you can get Engineers on your first mission, that works out well, however If you can rush Scientists instead you'll get Lasers by your second month, and sweep the game from there.
