Spacebar is pause. Use this all the time. It helps you break things down into manageable chunks
You can set the scripts to make the people automatically do stuff
There's something called the Ease of Use mod. It's very helpful.
The journal for BG1 isn't helpful. Ignore it. If you get a quest, write it down.
