yesterday, i sat down with my bro, and played some smash, and a ton of SM3DW. a game with aesthetics set to attract pre-school children. i haven't had that much fun with videogames in forever. like a bouncy castle, you never grow too old, only too self-conscious to enjoy it.
i wouldn't call myself a nintendo fan, but the WiiU is the only current console with a good library that i can't mostly get on PC too. also cheap.
yeah, SM3DW is very clearly designed with attracting kids in mind. bright colors, simple shapes and funny noises. the intro sequence is very particular about not using words, only the visual and the tone of voice to convey everything about it. i'm almost certain they asked themselves if it was appealing to a 4-year-old at several points of the development.
for those of us who are not 4YO, there is some decent gameplay to be had, good music, and lots of polish. the artstyle isn't very notable, it just serves it purpose of pandering to the lowest common denominator, children, without taking away anything for everybody else. Dong freeze or Splatoon both have a more interesting artstyle, but their lowest target demographic is probably 6-8 rather than 3+. i don't like it as a single player game at all, but it is amazingly fun as a co-operative platformer or a throw-people-off-platforms-er
It's not polished if it's the same stuff over and over again. They're starting to break the mold but they're not fully there yet. How many times did Super mario bros wii remind you of Mario Bros 3? SMB U of World? Pokemon is just adding more god damn pokemon and while they change the stats, iv's and other **** MOST do not care about the gameplay still remains the same. The biggest change was moving ******* diagonally. WOW! Star fox they've rebooted how many times? Metroid they've done stuff with but that is only because it was handled by a different company, not Nintendo.
"But the other franchises-" Megaman went to Megaman X, which was much more serious and had a much more emphasis on action and speed. Final Fantasy, while **** today, went on to create FFVII, FFIX, and FFX all of which have their own unique stories and characters unlike Zelda which keeps rehashing the same damn story and cookie cutter characters. Castlevania became an arguable better Metroid game. Symphony of the Night is considered to be one of the best Playstation games of all time.
They're games are polished but only because they've never done anything new with them. Whenever they do it tends to be my favorite of the franchise. Zelda Majora's Mask being one of them. When I play a Nintendo game I expect the same **** and that is boring. With Final fantasy, I USED TO expect familiar controls but a different cast of characters and world surrounding them.

........................... have a nice day with your polished gameplay, friend!
If you forget everything about it, you're bound to make the same mistakes
Other M has more than enough reasons to be remembered, none of those being good though
Let's also not forget that Other M was outsourced mostly to a team which was kinda not interested in nintendo games at the time.
Though they did do hyrule warriors as well, so that shows you how they don't care about keeping the franchises they're given consistent with what made them good to begin with. Hyrule Warriors, from what I hear, is a pretty good game, even a good addition to the franchise, but you can't exactly say it's a Zelda game. It's Dynasty Warriors with Zelda taped over it.
They continue playing the games they played as kids despite having out grown them. As someone who'll still buy the new Pokemon games, I can't exactly agree with this, but that's the message.
I bought a Wii U last year as my first nintendo anything and played through a lot of their old games, since I enjoyed them does that mean I'm still a kid at 22 and will live longer than people who didn't buy a Wii U?
The thing about Nintendo is that their games have more single player and replay value than 90% of games released on other consoles (probably more like 75% for PC). This appeals to us older gamers because when we grew up we did not have online play if we wanted multi player we had to get two or more people and controllers in the same house at the same time. Nintendo focuses on on good simple stories and simple solid gameplay (single and multi player) in an era of graphics, (for the most part pathetic attempts at) epic plots, and an overwhelming amount of (more often than not pathetic and forgettable) online multi player. Nintendo lets us play alone and have a good time again and again and again no new game necessary.
Are there actually people out there who think Nintendo offers games that actually stack up to most games that are played on the PC, Xbox or PS4? Or is this just a funny meme?
