Save up a little cash and build one. It's not that hard. You can build decent gaming PC for 700$. Only a couple hundred more than an Xbox One or a PS4.
User avatar #22 to #10 - THISISNOTFUNNY (09/25/2014) [-]
How exactly do you build a pc? I never did that in high school it did interest me then but now i regret it.

It's like an expensive 20-piece jigsaw puzzle. Every plug has a hole that it goes into and it's virtually impossible to **** up.

Newegg has a tutorial on it and despite it being a bit dated as far as the hardware being used, it's still a solid tutorial: youtube.com/watch?v=lPIXAtNGGCw

As for choosing the parts, pcpartpicker.com is an excellent source for checking competing product prices and compatibility. Choose your motherboard first and the website will immediately narrow all of your subsequent searches to only show compatible parts.

Also, to make sure you don't bottleneck your build (bottlenecking is when you purchase a high-end component that is unable to perform to its fullest extent due to being paired with cheaper parts. Sort of like running a three-legged race with a cripple.) you can check out logicalincrements.com . It gives you a set of price ranges and appropriate parts to use to meet them.

Is it better to build my own having 0 knowledge or to just buy one from someone off
Kijiji (an ebay like website where instead of shipping you go to pick it up at the persons house) As someone who doesn't have a large disposable income at the moment.

That's a tough question, and one that pc gamers are kind of divided on. Classified sites can give you a hell of a deal, but there isn't really a guarantee of quality.

If you find a good deal there are a few things you should make sure of:

- Is their OS legit (not pirated)
- Do they still have the OS CD (this is important because you'll want to reinstall the OS), driver CDs (for both the motherboard and video card), all of the additional wires and components (If the PSU isn't modular, there probably won't be many), and all of the manuals and associated papers.
- Does the computer run well?
- Does it run at all?

There may be additional things to check, or I may be listing too much. Either way, if they don't have a legit OS (Windows 7 or 8.1; 64-bit) with the install disk, or they won't let you test the computer, run. Run far away and never go back.

If you decide this it too much of a hassle, it isn't difficult to build your own. I knew jack **** about computers prior to building mine. With the links I posted, and maybe some help from the people at reddit.com/r/buildapc, you could have a Gaming PC in a week or two. (Even sooner if you have Amazon Prime and buy all of your parts from there.) Just set a budget and stick to it.

If im going to build my own i need to start off with something. That being the tower right? What should i be looking at?
User avatar #31 to #30 - bagofshenanigans (09/25/2014) [-]
pcpartpicker.com has a 'system build' button at the top left of the home screen. Start there. Choose parts starting with your CPU and go down from there. If you get stuck as far as what part is the best for your budget, go to logicalincrements.com .
Once you've finished your system build, you'll have to go to all of the individual websites and place your orders. You can consolidate it to one website like Amazon or NewEgg but it will cost a bit more.
Once the parts show up, just follow the tutorial link I posted earlier and you should be able to complete your build in a couple of hours.

The pcpartpicker helps a lot. Is there anything that you can avoid spending the big bucks on and still get the same value? And what should i not go cheap on?
User avatar #35 to #32 - randombro (09/25/2014) [-]
Also, there's loads of videos online showing, in detail, the physical process of building a PC. Really the hardest part is slotting in the CPU correctly, if you bend the pins, there goes $200.
User avatar #34 to #32 - randombro (09/25/2014) [-]
Never skimp on the PSU, and never skimp on the CPU. A bad PSU can destroy your entire computer. Check online for trusted PSU brands. I only stick with Corsair personally. A slow CPU will bottleneck the graphics card, as in, your graphics card can be the fastest in the world but a slower processor will hold it back to the point that it's nowhere near max performance. To save cash you could stick with the stock cooling fan, but if you eventually want to try overclocking, there's some really good air coolers out there for $30 like the Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo. You should probably go with Windows 7, and make absolutely sure that it's 64-bit! 32-bit can only use a max of like 3.5GB of RAM, and you're buying 8GB, so be careful.

CPU - Buy an unlocked one. It costs an extra $5-$10 but you may want to overclock in the future. Don't skimp on the CPU, it does pretty much everything. DON'T BEND THE PINS.

CPU cooler - You don't need it unless you plan on overclocking. CPUs come with a stock fan that works just fine with normal clock speeds. If you do decide to overclock, buy a decent cooling fan. If your CPU overheats, your computer will crash, and if you're cheap with your cooling, you'll end up with a very loud computer.

Motherboard - Definitely worth getting a nice one. Higher end ones will have really snazzy boot menus with fancy drag-and-drop UIs. The motherboard also connects to literally everything, so having a good one won't hurt.

Memory - Get 8 GB. It's all you'll need. Get two sticks of well-reviewed 4GB DDR3 RAM and make sure you put them into the correct slots on the motherboard to ensure you get the benefits of multiple sticks. Your motherboard manual should tell you which slots to use.

Storage - Get a well reviewed 1-2 TB hard drive.

Video Card - Don't skimp on the video card. It makes your games look good. Logical Increments should really be useful here.

Case - Make sure it's big enough, but not too big. Buying a better case will allow for better cable management, which helps airflow and keeps the PC cool. A mid tower should be fine.

Power supply - Everyone thinks they can cheap out on a PSU. Everyone is wrong. Buy a good PSU; one that's 80+ certified. Preferably 80+ Bronze or higher.

Optical Drive - Buy a cheap (but well-reviewed) $20 cd drive to install drivers and your OS.

Operating System - Windows 7 or 8.1. I love Windows 8.1 but it's quickly becoming the middle child of the ever-popular 7 and the upcoming windows 9. Either one is fine. 8.1 has faster boot times and lower resource usage, but it also has the Metro UI, which people hate. I say, buy whatever's cheaper. Make sure you get 64-bit.

You may also need some headphones/speakers as well as a mouse and keyboard.

I dont know if that worked, but if it did. Is there anything i could skimp lower on or the opposite i need to go bigger?

You're getting some really good deals on some of these parts; I'm jealous. I also see you haven't chosen a case. Let me suggest the one that I bought: pcpartpicker.com/part/fractal-design-case-fdcadefr4tiw
Plenty of room, dust filters, a cable management panel, and a window to remind you to dust every 6 months or so. It also looks like it's at an all-time low price.

Speaking of all-time low prices, I see you've chosen an Nvidia GTX video card. The reason they're so cheap right now is because they just released the new generation of GTX cards. Good timing on your part.

The 760 may be a bit underpowered for an overclocked 4690, but all that means is that you don't have to upgrade your CPU for a long time. But if you have $40 lying around that you were considering lighting on fire, I'd suggest bumping up to an ASUS 770 ( pcpartpicker.com/part/asus-video-card-gtx770dc2oc2gd5 ) but only if you reeeeeaaaaally want to.

This really is an excellent build. You should get on it before the prices change. And remember to do your mail-in rebates.
